Glueballs and k-strings in SU(N) gauge theories : calculations with improved operators
We test a variety of blocking and smearing algorithms for constructing
glueball and string wave-functionals, and find some with much improved overlaps
onto the lightest states. We use these algorithms to obtain improved results on
the tensions of k-strings in SU(4), SU(6), and SU(8) gauge theories. We
emphasise the major systematic errors that still need to be controlled in
calculations of heavier k-strings, and perform calculations in SU(4) on an
anisotropic lattice in a bid to minimise one of these. All these results point
to the k-string tensions lying part-way between the `MQCD' and `Casimir
Scaling' conjectures, with the power in 1/N of the leading correction lying in
[1,2]. We also obtain some evidence for the presence of quasi-stable strings in
calculations that do not use sources, and observe some near-degeneracies
between (excited) strings in different representations. We also calculate the
lightest glueball masses for N=2, ...,8, and extrapolate to N=infinity,
obtaining results compatible with earlier work. We show that the N=infinity
factorisation of the Euclidean correlators that are used in such mass
calculations does not make the masses any less calculable at large N.Comment: 49 pages, 15 figure
The photon propagator in compact QED_{2+1}: the effect of wrapping Dirac strings
We discuss the influence of closed Dirac strings on the photon propagator in
the Landau gauge emerging from a study of the compact U(1) gauge model in 2+1
dimensions. This gauge also minimizes the total length of the Dirac strings.
Closed Dirac strings are stable against local gauge-fixing algorithms only due
to the torus boundary conditions of the lattice. We demonstrate that these
left-over Dirac strings are responsible for the previously observed unphysical
behavior of the propagator of space-like photons (D_T) in the deconfinement
(high temperature) phase. We show how one can monitor the number N_3 of thermal
Dirac strings which allows to separate the propagator measurements into N_3
sectors. The propagator in N_3 \neq 0 sectors is characterized by a non--zero
mass and an anomalous dimension similarly to the confinement phase. Both mass
squared and anomalous dimension are found to be proportional to N_3.
Consequently, in the N_3=0 sector the unphysical behavior of the D_T photon
propagator is cured and the deviation from the free massless propagator
disappears.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 1 tabl
Truly Subquadratic-Time Extension Queries and Periodicity Detection in Strings with Uncertainties
Strings with don\u27t care symbols, also called partial words, and more general indeterminate strings are a natural representation of strings containing uncertain symbols. A considerable effort has been made to obtain efficient algorithms for pattern matching and periodicity detection in such strings. Among those, a number of algorithms have been proposed that behave well on random data, but still their worst-case running time is Theta(n^2). We present the first truly subquadratic-time solutions for a number of such problems on partial words that can also be adapted to indeterminate strings over a constant-sized alphabet. We show that longest common compatible prefix queries (which correspond to longest common extension queries in regular strings) can be answered on-line in O(n * sqrt(n * log(n)) time after O(n * sqrt(n * log(n))-time preprocessing. We also present O(n * sqrt(n * log(n))-time algorithms for computing the prefix array and two types of border array of a partial word
