Mastering Heterogeneous Behavioural Models
Heterogeneity is one important feature of complex systems, leading to the
complexity of their construction and analysis. Moving the heterogeneity at
model level helps in mastering the difficulty of composing heterogeneous models
which constitute a large system. We propose a method made of an algebra and
structure morphisms to deal with the interaction of behavioural models,
provided that they are compatible. We prove that heterogeneous models can
interact in a safe way, and therefore complex heterogeneous systems can be
built and analysed incrementally. The Uppaal tool is targeted for

Positioning for conceptual development using latent semantic analysis
With increasing opportunities to learn online, the problem of positioning learners in an educational network of content offers new possibilities for the utilisation of geometry-based natural language processing techniques.
In this article, the adoption of latent semantic analysis (LSA) for guiding learners in their conceptual development is investigated. We propose five new algorithmic derivations of LSA and test their validity for positioning in an experiment in order to draw back conclusions on the suitability of machine learning from previously accredited evidence. Special attention is thereby directed towards the role of distractors and the calculation of thresholds when using similarities as a proxy for assessing conceptual closeness.
Results indicate that learning improves positioning. Distractors are of low value and seem to be replaceable by generic noise to improve threshold calculation. Furthermore, new ways to flexibly calculate thresholds could be identified
A comparative reliability analysis of ETCS train radio communications
StoCharts have been proposed as a UML statechart extension for performance and dependability evaluation, and were applied in the context of train radio reliability assessment to show the principal tractability of realistic cases with this approach. In this paper, we extend on this bare feasibility result in two important directions. First, we sketch the cornerstones of a mechanizable translation of StoCharts to MoDeST. The latter is a process algebra-based formalism supported by the Motor/Möbius tool tandem. Second, we exploit this translation for a detailed analysis of the train radio case study
Agents in Bioinformatics
The scope of the Technical Forum Group (TFG) on Agents in Bioinformatics (BIOAGENTS) was to inspire collaboration between the agent and bioinformatics communities with the aim of creating an opportunity to propose a different (agent-based) approach to the development of computational frameworks both for data analysis in bioinformatics and for system modelling in computational biology. During the day, the participants examined the future of research on agents in bioinformatics primarily through 12 invited talks selected to cover the most relevant topics. From the discussions, it became clear that there are many perspectives to the field, ranging from bio-conceptual languages for agent-based simulation, to the definition of bio-ontology-based declarative languages for use by information agents, and to the use of Grid agents, each of which requires further exploration. The interactions between participants encouraged the development of applications that describe a way of creating agent-based simulation models of biological systems, starting from an hypothesis and inferring new knowledge (or relations) by mining and analysing the huge amount of public biological data. Switcher-random-walks: a cognitive-inspired mechanism for network exploration
Semantic memory is the subsystem of human memory that stores knowledge of
concepts or meanings, as opposed to life specific experiences. The organization
of concepts within semantic memory can be understood as a semantic network,
where the concepts (nodes) are associated (linked) to others depending on
perceptions, similarities, etc. Lexical access is the complementary part of
this system and allows the retrieval of such organized knowledge. While
conceptual information is stored under certain underlying organization (and
thus gives rise to a specific topology), it is crucial to have an accurate
access to any of the information units, e.g. the concepts, for efficiently
retrieving semantic information for real-time needings. An example of an
information retrieval process occurs in verbal fluency tasks, and it is known
to involve two different mechanisms: -clustering-, or generating words within a
subcategory, and, when a subcategory is exhausted, -switching- to a new
subcategory. We extended this approach to random-walking on a network
(clustering) in combination to jumping (switching) to any node with certain
probability and derived its analytical expression based on Markov chains.
Results show that this dual mechanism contributes to optimize the exploration
of different network models in terms of the mean first passage time.
Additionally, this cognitive inspired dual mechanism opens a new framework to
better understand and evaluate exploration, propagation and transport phenomena
