Centralized versus market-based approaches to mobile task allocation problem: State-of-the-art
Centralized approach has been adopted for finding solutions to resource allocation problems (RAPs) in many real-life applications. On the other hand, market-based approach has been proposed as an alternative to solve the problem due to recent advancement in ICT technologies. In spite of the existence of some efforts to review the pros and cons of each approach in RAPs, the studies cannot be directly applied to specific problem domains like mobile task allocation problem which is characterised with high level of uncertainty on the availability of resources (workers). This paper aims to review existing studies on task allocation problems(TAPs) focusing on those two approaches and their comparison and identify major issues that need to be resolved for comparing the two approaches in mobile task allocation problems. Mobile Task Allocation Problem (MTAP) is defined and its problematic structures are explained in relation with task allocation to mobile workers. Solutions produced by each approach to some applications and variations of MTAP are also discussed and compared. Finally, some future research directions are identified in order to compare both approaches in function of uncertainty emerging from the mobile nature of the MTAP
Multi Agent Systems in Logistics: A Literature and State-of-the-art Review
Based on a literature survey, we aim to answer our main question: “How should we plan and execute logistics in supply chains that aim to meet today’s requirements, and how can we support such planning and execution using IT?†Today’s requirements in supply chains include inter-organizational collaboration and more responsive and tailored supply to meet specific demand. Enterprise systems fall short in meeting these requirements The focus of planning and execution systems should move towards an inter-enterprise and event-driven mode. Inter-organizational systems may support planning going from supporting information exchange and henceforth enable synchronized planning within the organizations towards the capability to do network planning based on available information throughout the network. We provide a framework for planning systems, constituting a rich landscape of possible configurations, where the centralized and fully decentralized approaches are two extremes. We define and discuss agent based systems and in particular multi agent systems (MAS). We emphasize the issue of the role of MAS coordination architectures, and then explain that transportation is, next to production, an important domain in which MAS can and actually are applied. However, implementation is not widespread and some implementation issues are explored. In this manner, we conclude that planning problems in transportation have characteristics that comply with the specific capabilities of agent systems. Cost Adaptation for Robust Decentralized Swarm Behaviour
Decentralized receding horizon control (D-RHC) provides a mechanism for
coordination in multi-agent settings without a centralized command center.
However, combining a set of different goals, costs, and constraints to form an
efficient optimization objective for D-RHC can be difficult. To allay this
problem, we use a meta-learning process -- cost adaptation -- which generates
the optimization objective for D-RHC to solve based on a set of human-generated
priors (cost and constraint functions) and an auxiliary heuristic. We use this
adaptive D-RHC method for control of mesh-networked swarm agents. This
formulation allows a wide range of tasks to be encoded and can account for
network delays, heterogeneous capabilities, and increasingly large swarms
through the adaptation mechanism. We leverage the Unity3D game engine to build
a simulator capable of introducing artificial networking failures and delays in
the swarm. Using the simulator we validate our method on an example coordinated
exploration task. We demonstrate that cost adaptation allows for more efficient
and safer task completion under varying environment conditions and increasingly
large swarm sizes. We release our simulator and code to the community for

The Demand for Coordination
This paper endogenizes coordination problems in organizations by allowing for both ex ante coordination of activities, using rules and task guidelines, and ex post coordination, using communication and broad job assignments. It shows that: (i) Task specialization and the division of labor is mainly limited by employee discretion, rather than by the importance of coordination. In particular, specialization is often non-monotonic in the importance of coordination. (ii) Organizations exhibit increasing returns to ex post coordination. This rationalizes discrete `shifts' in organizational design from very rigid and specialized task assignments, to very flexible organizations characterized by extensive task bundling, intensive horizontal communication and substantial employee discretion. (iii) Broad task assignments and intensive horizontal communication are complementary. Hence, lower communication costs often result in less specialization.
Knowledge Management What Can Organizational Economics Contribute?
Knowledge management has emerged as a very successful organization practice and has been extensively treated in a large body of academic work. Surprisingly, however, organizational economics (i.e., transaction cost economics, agency theory, team theory and property rights theory) has played no role in the development of knowledge management. We argue that organizational economics insights can further the theory and practice of knowledge management in several ways. Specifically, we apply notions of contracting, team production, complementaries, hold-up, etc. to knowledge management issues (i.e., creating and integration knowledge, rewarding knowledge workers, etc.) , and derive refutable implications that are novel to the knowledge management field from our discussion.Transaction costs, organizational economics
Coordination under the Shadow of Career Concerns
To innovate, employees need to develop novel ideas and coordinate with each other to turn these ideas into better products and services. Work outcomes provide signals about employees' abilities to the labor market, and therefore career concerns arise. These can both be 'good' (enhancing incentives for effort in developing ideas) and 'bad' (preventing voluntary coordination). Our model shows how the firm designs its explicit incentive system and organizes work processes to take these conflicting forces into account. Important aspects of leadership behavior can be rendered intelligible through a focus on coordination games. The concept of common knowledge is shown to be particularly important to understanding leadership. Modeling Human Ad Hoc Coordination
Whether in groups of humans or groups of computer agents, collaboration is
most effective between individuals who have the ability to coordinate on a
joint strategy for collective action. However, in general a rational actor will
only intend to coordinate if that actor believes the other group members have
the same intention. This circular dependence makes rational coordination
difficult in uncertain environments if communication between actors is
unreliable and no prior agreements have been made. An important normative
question with regard to coordination in these ad hoc settings is therefore how
one can come to believe that other actors will coordinate, and with regard to
systems involving humans, an important empirical question is how humans arrive
at these expectations. We introduce an exact algorithm for computing the
infinitely recursive hierarchy of graded beliefs required for rational
coordination in uncertain environments, and we introduce a novel mechanism for
multiagent coordination that uses it. Our algorithm is valid in any environment
with a finite state space, and extensions to certain countably infinite state
spaces are likely possible. We test our mechanism for multiagent coordination
as a model for human decisions in a simple coordination game using existing
experimental data. We then explore via simulations whether modeling humans in
