    Moving towards Adaptive Search

    Information retrieval has become very popular over the last decade with the advent of the Web. Nevertheless, searching on the Web is very different to searching on smaller, often more structured collections such as intranets and digital libraries. Such collections are the focus of the recently started AutoAdapt project1. The project seeks to aid user search by providing well-structured domain knowledge to assist query modification and navigation. There are two challenges: acquiring the domain knowledge and adapting it automatically to the specific interest of the user community. At the workshop we will demonstrate an implemented prototype that serves as a starting point on the way to truly adaptive search

    Multilingual adaptive search for digital libraries

    This paper describes a framework for Adaptive Multilingual Information Retrieval (AMIR) which allows multilingual resource discovery and delivery using on-the-fly machine translation of documents and queries. Result documents are presented to the user in a contextualised manner. Challenges and affordances of both Adaptive and Multilingual IR, with a particular focus on Digital Libraries, are detailed. The framework components are motivated by a series of results from experiments on query logs and documents from The European Library. We conclude that factoring adaptivity and multilinguality aspects into the search process can enhance the user’s experience with online Digital Libraries

    Searching with Measurement Dependent Noise

    Consider a target moving with a constant velocity on a unit-circumference circle, starting from an arbitrary location. To acquire the target, any region of the circle can be probed for its presence, but the associated measurement noise increases with the size of the probed region. We are interested in the expected time required to find the target to within some given resolution and error probability. For a known velocity, we characterize the optimal tradeoff between time and resolution (i.e., maximal rate), and show that in contrast to the case of constant measurement noise, measurement dependent noise incurs a multiplicative gap between adaptive search and non-adaptive search. Moreover, our adaptive scheme attains the optimal rate-reliability tradeoff. We further show that for optimal non-adaptive search, accounting for an unknown velocity incurs a factor of two in rate.Comment: Information Theory Workshop (ITW) 201

    Resource-Constrained Adaptive Search and Tracking for Sparse Dynamic Targets

    This paper considers the problem of resource-constrained and noise-limited localization and estimation of dynamic targets that are sparsely distributed over a large area. We generalize an existing framework [Bashan et al, 2008] for adaptive allocation of sensing resources to the dynamic case, accounting for time-varying target behavior such as transitions to neighboring cells and varying amplitudes over a potentially long time horizon. The proposed adaptive sensing policy is driven by minimization of a modified version of the previously introduced ARAP objective function, which is a surrogate function for mean squared error within locations containing targets. We provide theoretical upper bounds on the performance of adaptive sensing policies by analyzing solutions with oracle knowledge of target locations, gaining insight into the effect of target motion and amplitude variation as well as sparsity. Exact minimization of the multi-stage objective function is infeasible, but myopic optimization yields a closed-form solution. We propose a simple non-myopic extension, the Dynamic Adaptive Resource Allocation Policy (D-ARAP), that allocates a fraction of resources for exploring all locations rather than solely exploiting the current belief state. Our numerical studies indicate that D-ARAP has the following advantages: (a) it is more robust than the myopic policy to noise, missing data, and model mismatch; (b) it performs comparably to well-known approximate dynamic programming solutions but at significantly lower computational complexity; and (c) it improves greatly upon non-adaptive uniform resource allocation in terms of estimation error and probability of detection.Comment: 49 pages, 1 table, 11 figure

    Robust and Adaptive Search

    Binary search finds a given element in a sorted array with an optimal number of log n queries. However, binary search fails even when the array is only slightly disordered or access to its elements is subject to errors. We study the worst-case query complexity of search algorithms that are robust to imprecise queries and that adapt to perturbations of the order of the elements. We give (almost) tight results for various parameters that quantify query errors and that measure array disorder. In particular, we exhibit settings where query complexities of log n + ck, (1+epsilon) log n + ck, and sqrt(cnk)+o(nk) are best-possible for parameter value k, any epsilon > 0, and constant c

    Hysteresis in an Evolutionary Labor Market with Adaptive Search

    This study undertakes a systematic experimental investigation of hysteresis (path dependency) in an agent-based computational labor market framework. It is shown that capacity asymmetries between work suppliers and employers can result in two distinct hysteresis effects, network and behavioral, when work suppliers and employers interact strategically and evolve their worksite behaviors over time. These hysteresis effects result in persistent heterogeneity in earnings and employment histories across agents who have no observable structural differences. At a more global level, these hysteresis effects are shown to result in a one-to-many mapping between treatment factors and experimental outcomes.     The role of expectations in an adaptive search model

    The purpose of this paper is to find sufficient conditions under which the results of the simple search model are preserved when learning is allowed. It is shown that the properties of the simple search model are preserved with very simple assumptions. Intuitively, we need a non explosive agent. That is, expectations must be smooth.
