BriskStream: Scaling Data Stream Processing on Shared-Memory Multicore Architectures
We introduce BriskStream, an in-memory data stream processing system (DSPSs)
specifically designed for modern shared-memory multicore architectures.
BriskStream's key contribution is an execution plan optimization paradigm,
namely RLAS, which takes relative-location (i.e., NUMA distance) of each pair
of producer-consumer operators into consideration. We propose a branch and
bound based approach with three heuristics to resolve the resulting nontrivial
optimization problem. The experimental evaluations demonstrate that BriskStream
yields much higher throughput and better scalability than existing DSPSs on
multi-core architectures when processing different types of workloads.Comment: To appear in SIGMOD'1
REPP-H: runtime estimation of power and performance on heterogeneous data centers
Modern data centers increasingly demand improved performance with minimal power consumption. Managing the power and performance requirements of the applications is challenging because these data centers, incidentally or intentionally, have to deal with server architecture heterogeneity [19], [22]. Parallel Branch-and-Bound in Multi-core Multi-CPU Multi-GPU Heterogeneous Environments
International audienceWe investigate the design of parallel B&B in large scale heterogeneous compute environments where processing units can be composed of a mixture of multiple shared memory cores, multiple distributed CPUs and multiple GPUs devices. We describe two approaches addressing the critical issue of how to map B&B workload with the different levels of parallelism exposed by the target compute platform. We also contribute a throughout large scale experimental study which allows us to derive a comprehensive and fair analysis of the proposed approaches under different system configurations using up to 16 GPUs and up to 512 CPU-cores. Our results shed more light on the main challenges one has to face when tackling B&B algorithms while describing efficient techniques to address them. In particular, we are able to obtain linear speed-ups at moderate scales where adaptive load balancing among the heterogeneous compute resources is shown to have a significant impact on performance. At the largest scales, intra-node parallelism and hybrid decentralized load balancing is shown to have a crucial importance in order to alleviate locking issues among shared memory threads and to scale the distributed resources while optimizing communication costs and minimizing idle time
Configurable Strategies for Work-stealing
Work-stealing systems are typically oblivious to the nature of the tasks they
are scheduling. For instance, they do not know or take into account how long a
task will take to execute or how many subtasks it will spawn. Moreover, the
actual task execution order is typically determined by the underlying task
storage data structure, and cannot be changed. There are thus possibilities for
optimizing task parallel executions by providing information on specific tasks
and their preferred execution order to the scheduling system.
We introduce scheduling strategies to enable applications to dynamically
provide hints to the task-scheduling system on the nature of specific tasks.
Scheduling strategies can be used to independently control both local task
execution order as well as steal order. In contrast to conventional scheduling
policies that are normally global in scope, strategies allow the scheduler to
apply optimizations on individual tasks. This flexibility greatly improves
composability as it allows the scheduler to apply different, specific
scheduling choices for different parts of applications simultaneously. We
present a number of benchmarks that highlight diverse, beneficial effects that
can be achieved with scheduling strategies. Some benchmarks (branch-and-bound,
single-source shortest path) show that prioritization of tasks can reduce the
total amount of work compared to standard work-stealing execution order. For
other benchmarks (triangle strip generation) qualitatively better results can
be achieved in shorter time. Other optimizations, such as dynamic merging of
tasks or stealing of half the work, instead of half the tasks, are also shown
to improve performance. Composability is demonstrated by examples that combine
different strategies, both within the same kernel (prefix sum) as well as when
scheduling multiple kernels (prefix sum and unbalanced tree search)
A GPU-accelerated Branch-and-Bound Algorithm for the Flow-Shop Scheduling Problem
Branch-and-Bound (B&B) algorithms are time intensive tree-based exploration
methods for solving to optimality combinatorial optimization problems. In this
paper, we investigate the use of GPU computing as a major complementary way to
speed up those methods. The focus is put on the bounding mechanism of B&B
algorithms, which is the most time consuming part of their exploration process.
We propose a parallel B&B algorithm based on a GPU-accelerated bounding model.
The proposed approach concentrate on optimizing data access management to
further improve the performance of the bounding mechanism which uses large and
intermediate data sets that do not completely fit in GPU memory. Extensive
experiments of the contribution have been carried out on well known FSP
benchmarks using an Nvidia Tesla C2050 GPU card. We compared the obtained
performances to a single and a multithreaded CPU-based execution. Accelerations
up to x100 are achieved for large problem instances
