    Application of Wireless Sensor Networks for Indoor Temperature Regulation

    International audienceWireless sensor networks take a major part in our everyday lives by enhancing systems for home automation, healthcare, temperature control, energy consumption monitoring, and so forth. In this paper we focus on a system used for temperature regulation for residential, educational, industrial, and commercial premises, and so forth. We propose a framework for indoor temperature regulation and optimization using wireless sensor networks based on ZigBee platform. This paper considers architectural design of the system, as well as implementation guidelines. The proposed system favors methods that provide energy savings by reducing the amount of data transmissions through the network. Furthermore, the framework explores techniques for localization, such that the location of the nodes can be used by algorithms that regulate temperature settings

    An Adaptive Approach for Online Segmentation of Multi-Dimensional Mobile Data

    With increasing availability of mobile sensing devices including smartphones, online mobile data segmentation becomes an important topic in reconstructing and understanding mobile data. Traditional approaches like online time series segmentation either use a fixed model or only apply an adaptive model on one dimensional data; it turns out that such methods are not very applicable to build online segmentation for multiple dimensional mobile sensor data (e.g., 3D accelerometer or 11 dimension features like ‘mean’, ‘vari- ance’, ‘covariance’, ‘magnitude’, etc). In this paper, we design an adaptive model for segment- ing real-time accelerometer data from smartphones, which is able to (a) dynamically select suitable dimensions to build a model, and (b) adaptively pick up a proper model. In addition to using the traditional residual-style regression errors to evaluate time series segmentation, we design a rich metric to evaluate mobile data segmentation results, including (1) traditional regression error, (2) Information Retrieval style measurements (i.e., precision, recall, F-measure), and (3) segmentation time delay

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) collect data and continuously monitor ambient data such as temperature, humidity and light. The continuous data transmission of energy constrained sensor nodes is a challenge to the lifetime and performance of WSNs. The type of deployment environment is also and the network topology also contributes to the depletion of nodes which threatens the lifetime and the also the performance of the network. To overcome these challenges, a number of approaches have been proposed and implemented. Of these approaches are routing, clustering, prediction, and duty cycling. Prediction approaches may be used to schedule the sleep periods of nodes to improve the lifetime. The chapter discusses WSN deployment environment, energy conservation techniques, mobility in WSN, prediction approaches and their applications in scheduling the sleep/wake-up periods of sensor nodes

    In recent years, due to the proliferation of sensor networks, there has been a genuine need of researching techniques for sensor data acquisition and management. To this end, a large number of techniques have emerged that advocate model-based sensor data acquisition and management. These techniques use mathematical models for performing various, day-to-day tasks involved in managing sensor data. In this chapter, we survey the state-of-the-art techniques for model-based sensor data acquisition and management. We start by discussing the techniques for acquiring sensor data. We, then, discuss the application of models in sensor data cleaning; followed by a discussion on model-based methods for querying sensor data.
