    An Explanatory Study on the Non-Parametric Multivariate T2 Control Chart

    Most control charts require the assumption of normal distribution for observations. When distribution is not normal, one can use non-parametric control charts such as sign control chart. A deficiency of such control charts could be the loss of information due to replacing an observation with its sign or rank. Furthermore, because the chart statistics of T2 are correlated, the T2 chart is not a desire performance. Non-parametric bootstrap algorithm could help to calculate control chart parameters using the original observations while no assumption regarding the distribution is needed. In this paper, first, a bootstrap multivariate control chart is presented based on Hotelling’s T2 statistic then the performance of the bootstrap multivariate control chart is compared to a Hotelling’s T2 parametric multivariate control chart, a multivariate sign control chart, and a multivariate Wilcoxon control chart using a simulation study. Ultimately, the bootstrap multivariate control chart is used in an empirical example to study the process of sugar production

    Neonatal Diagnostics: Toward Dynamic Growth Charts of Neuromotor Control

This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY).The current rise of neurodevelopmental disorders poses a critical need to detect risk early in order to rapidly intervene. One of the tools pediatricians use to track development is the standard growth chart. The growth charts are somewhat limited in predicting possible neurodevelopmental issues. They rely on linear models and assumptions of normality for physical growth data – obscuring key statistical information about possible neurodevelopmental risk in growth data that actually has accelerated, non-linear rates-of-change and variability encompassing skewed distributions. Here, we use new analytics to profile growth data from 36 newborn babies that were tracked longitudinally for 5 months. By switching to incremental (velocity-based) growth charts and combining these dynamic changes with underlying fluctuations in motor performance – as the transition from spontaneous random noise to a systematic signal – we demonstrate a method to detect very early stunting in the development of voluntary neuromotor control and to flag risk of neurodevelopmental derail.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

    Manifold interpolation and model reduction

    One approach to parametric and adaptive model reduction is via the interpolation of orthogonal bases, subspaces or positive definite system matrices. In all these cases, the sampled inputs stem from matrix sets that feature a geometric structure and thus form so-called matrix manifolds. This work will be featured as a chapter in the upcoming Handbook on Model Order Reduction (P. Benner, S. Grivet-Talocia, A. Quarteroni, G. Rozza, W.H.A. Schilders, L.M. Silveira, eds, to appear on DE GRUYTER) and reviews the numerical treatment of the most important matrix manifolds that arise in the context of model reduction.     General Profile Monitoring Through Nonparametric Techniques

    This Ph.D. thesis is devoted to Statistical Process Control (SPC) methods for monitoring over time the stability of a relation between two variables (profile). Very often in literature the functional form of the relation is assumed to be known, whereas in this work we concentrated on generic and unknown relations which have to be estimated with the usual nonparametric regression techniques. The original contributes are two, resented in chapters 2 and 3 respectively. In Chapter 1 we make a brief overview on the topic in order to make you become familiar with these specific problems of Statistical Process Control (SPC) applications and we introduce you to the original parts of this work. In Chapter 2 we envelope and compare five new control charts for monitoring on-line unknown general, and not only linear, relations among variables over time under the assumption of the normality of the errors; these charts combine in an original way the following techniques: self-starting methods, useful to drop the distinction between Phase I and Phase II of the analysis; very known multivariate charting schemes as MEWMA and CUSCORE; nonparametric testing techniques as wavelet methods and kernel linear smoothing. In Chapter 3, instead, we construct a test statistic useful to check with a completely nonparametric procedure the stability of a process retrospectively, thus off-line. Both second and third chapters are structured in the following way: brief literature review; framework and model considered in our study; simulation study; a section with some useful complements on the topics and relative research carried out; conclusion and suggestions for future research

    Posturographic Analysis in Patients Affected by Central and Peripheral Visual Impairment

    Abstract: Although vision loss is known to affect equilibrium maintenance, postural control in patients affected by low vision has been poorly investigated. We evaluated postural stability and the ability to use visual, proprioceptive and vestibular information in different low vision patterns. Ten adults with normal vision (NC), fourteen adults affected by central visual impairment (CLV) and eight adults affected by peripheral visual impairment (PLV) were enrolled in our study. Patients underwent visual, vestibular and postural evaluation (bedside examination, Computed Dynamic Posturograophy). Motor Control Tests were performed to analyze automatic postural adaptive re- sponses elicited by unexpected postural disturbances. Clinical evaluations did not show abnormality in all patients. In the Sensory Organization Test, CLV and PLV patients performed more poorly in conditions 3–6 and 3–4, as compared to NC subjects. The condition 5 score was significantly lower in the CLV group with respect to the PLV patients. Composite equilibrium scores demonstrated significant differences between low-vision subjects vs. NC subjects. No differences were found for somatosensorial contribution. Visual afferences showed lower values in all visually impaired subjects, while vestibular contribution was lower in the CLV patients as compared to the NC and PLV patients. MCT latencies were significantly worse in the CLV subjects. In the low-vision patients, postural control was modified with a specific pattern of strategy adaptation. Different modulations of postural control and different adaptive responses seemed to characterize CLV patients as compared to PLV subjects
