Power-Efficient Radio Resource Allocation for Low-Medium -Altitude Aerial Platform Based TD-LTE Networks
In order to provide an increased capacity, throughput and QoS guarantee for terrestrial users in emergency scenarios, a low-medium-altitude aerial platform based time-division-duplex long term evolution (TD-LTE) system referred to as Aerial LTE, is presented in this paper. Additionally a power-efficient radio resource allocation mechanism is proposed for both the Aerial LTE downlink and uplink, which is modeled as a cooperative game. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm imposes an attractive tradeoff between the achievable throughput and the power consumption while ensuring fairness among users
A Novel Airborne Self-organising Architecture for 5G+ Networks
Network Flying Platforms (NFPs) such as unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned
balloons or drones flying at low/medium/high altitude can be employed to
enhance network coverage and capacity by deploying a swarm of flying platforms
that implement novel radio resource management techniques. In this paper, we
propose a novel layered architecture where NFPs, of various types and flying at
low/medium/high layers in a swarm of flying platforms, are considered as an
integrated part of the future cellular networks to inject additional capacity
and expand the coverage for exceptional scenarios (sports events, concerts,
etc.) and hard-to-reach areas (rural or sparsely populated areas). Successful
roll-out of the proposed architecture depends on several factors including, but
are not limited to: network optimisation for NFP placement and association,
safety operations of NFP for network/equipment security, and reliability for
NFP transport and control/signaling mechanisms. In this work, we formulate the
optimum placement of NFP at a Lower Layer (LL) by exploiting the airborne
Self-organising Network (SON) features. Our initial simulations show the NFP-LL

Aerial-terrestrial communications: terrestrial cooperation and energy-efficient transmissions to aerial-base stations
Hybrid aerial-terrestrial communication networks based on low-altitude platforms are expected to meet optimally the urgent communication needs of emergency relief and recovery operations for tackling large-scale natural disasters. The energy-efficient operation of such networks is important given that the entire network infrastructure, including the battery-operated ground terminals, exhibits requirements to operate under power-constrained situations. In this paper, we discuss the design and evaluation of an adaptive cooperative scheme intended to extend the survivability of the battery-operated aerial-terrestrial communication links. We propose and evaluate a real-time adaptive cooperative transmission strategy for dynamic selection between direct and cooperative links based on the channel conditions for improved energy efficiency. We show that the cooperation between mobile terrestrial terminals on the ground could improve energy efficiency in the uplink, depending on the temporal behavior of the terrestrial and aerial uplink channels. The corresponding delay in having cooperative (relay-based) communications with relay selection is also addressed. The simulation analysis corroborates that the adaptive transmission technique improves overall energy efficiency of the network whilst maintaining low latency, enabling real-time applications
A Vision and Framework for the High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) Networks of the Future
A High Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) is a network node that operates in
the stratosphere at an of altitude around 20 km and is instrumental for
providing communication services. Precipitated by technological innovations in
the areas of autonomous avionics, array antennas, solar panel efficiency
levels, and battery energy densities, and fueled by flourishing industry
ecosystems, the HAPS has emerged as an indispensable component of
next-generations of wireless networks. In this article, we provide a vision and
framework for the HAPS networks of the future supported by a comprehensive and
state-of-the-art literature review. We highlight the unrealized potential of
HAPS systems and elaborate on their unique ability to serve metropolitan areas.
The latest advancements and promising technologies in the HAPS energy and
payload systems are discussed. The integration of the emerging Reconfigurable
Smart Surface (RSS) technology in the communications payload of HAPS systems
for providing a cost-effective deployment is proposed. A detailed overview of
the radio resource management in HAPS systems is presented along with
synergistic physical layer techniques, including Faster-Than-Nyquist (FTN)
signaling. Numerous aspects of handoff management in HAPS systems are
described. The notable contributions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in HAPS,
including machine learning in the design, topology management, handoff, and
resource allocation aspects are emphasized. The extensive overview of the
literature we provide is crucial for substantiating our vision that depicts the
expected deployment opportunities and challenges in the next 10 years
(next-generation networks), as well as in the subsequent 10 years

Improving the system capacity of broadband services using multiple high-altitude platforms
A method of significantly improving the capacity of high-altitude platform (HAP) communications networks operating in the millimeter-wave bands is presented. It is shown how constellations of HAPs can share a common frequency allocation by exploiting the directionality of the user antenna. The system capacity of such constellations is critically affected by the minimum angular separation of the HAPs and the sidelobe level of the user antenna. For typical antenna beamwidths of approximately 5/spl deg/ an inter-HAP spacing of 4 km is sufficient to deliver optimum performance. The aggregate bandwidth efficiency is evaluated, both theoretically using the Shannon equation, and using practical modulation and coding schemes, for multiple HAP configurations delivering either single or multiple cells. For the user antenna beamwidths used, it is shown that capacity increases are commensurate with the increase in the number of platforms, up to 10 HAPs. For increases beyond this the choice of constellation strategy becomes increasingly important
