    Automated artemia length measurement using U-shaped fully convolutional networks and second-order anisotropic Gaussian kernels

    The brine shrimp Artemia, a small crustacean zooplankton organism, is universally used as live prey for larval fish and shrimps in aquaculture. In Artemia studies, it would be highly desired to have access to automated techniques to obtain the length information from Anemia images. However, this problem has so far not been addressed in literature. Moreover, conventional image-based length measurement approaches cannot be readily transferred to measure the Artemia length, due to the distortion of non-rigid bodies, the variation over growth stages and the interference from the antennae and other appendages. To address this problem, we compile a dataset containing 250 images as well as the corresponding label maps of length measuring lines. We propose an automated Anemia length measurement method using U-shaped fully convolutional networks (UNet) and second-order anisotropic Gaussian kernels. For a given Artemia image, the designed UNet model is used to extract a length measuring line structure, and, subsequently, the second-order Gaussian kernels are employed to transform the length measuring line structure into a thin measuring line. For comparison, we also follow conventional fish length measurement approaches and develop a non-learning-based method using mathematical morphology and polynomial curve fitting. We evaluate the proposed method and the competing methods on 100 test images taken from the dataset compiled. Experimental results show that the proposed method can accurately measure the length of Artemia objects in images, obtaining a mean absolute percentage error of 1.16%

    Underwater Fish Detection with Weak Multi-Domain Supervision

    Given a sufficiently large training dataset, it is relatively easy to train a modern convolution neural network (CNN) as a required image classifier. However, for the task of fish classification and/or fish detection, if a CNN was trained to detect or classify particular fish species in particular background habitats, the same CNN exhibits much lower accuracy when applied to new/unseen fish species and/or fish habitats. Therefore, in practice, the CNN needs to be continuously fine-tuned to improve its classification accuracy to handle new project-specific fish species or habitats. In this work we present a labelling-efficient method of training a CNN-based fish-detector (the Xception CNN was used as the base) on relatively small numbers (4,000) of project-domain underwater fish/no-fish images from 20 different habitats. Additionally, 17,000 of known negative (that is, missing fish) general-domain (VOC2012) above-water images were used. Two publicly available fish-domain datasets supplied additional 27,000 of above-water and underwater positive/fish images. By using this multi-domain collection of images, the trained Xception-based binary (fish/not-fish) classifier achieved 0.17% false-positives and 0.61% false-negatives on the project's 20,000 negative and 16,000 positive holdout test images, respectively.     Coastal Aquaculture Extraction Using GF-3 Fully Polarimetric SAR Imagery: A Framework Integrating UNet++ with Marker-Controlled Watershed Segmentation

    Coastal aquaculture monitoring is vital for sustainable offshore aquaculture management. However, the dense distribution and various sizes of aquacultures make it challenging to accurately extract the boundaries of aquaculture ponds. In this study, we develop a novel combined framework that integrates UNet++ with a marker-controlled watershed segmentation strategy to facilitate aquaculture boundary extraction from fully polarimetric GaoFen-3 SAR imagery. First, four polarimetric decomposition algorithms were applied to extract 13 polarimetric scattering features. Together with the nine other polarisation and texture features, a total of 22 polarimetric features were then extracted, among which four were optimised according to the separability index. Subsequently, to reduce the “adhesion” phenomenon and separate adjacent and even adhering ponds into individual aquaculture units, two UNet++ subnetworks were utilised to construct the marker and foreground functions, the results of which were then used in the marker-controlled watershed algorithm to obtain refined aquaculture results. A multiclass segmentation strategy that divides the intermediate markers into three categories (aquaculture, background and dikes) was applied to the marker function. In addition, a boundary patch refinement postprocessing strategy was applied to the two subnetworks to extract and repair the complex/error-prone boundaries of the aquaculture ponds, followed by a morphological operation that was conducted for label augmentation. An experimental investigation performed to extract individual aquacultures in the Yancheng Coastal Wetlands indicated that the crucial features for aquacultures are Shannon entropy (SE), the intensity component of SE (SE_I) and the corresponding mean texture features (Mean_SE and Mean_SE_I). When the optimal features were introduced, our proposed method performed better than standard UNet++ in aquaculture extraction, achieving improvements of 1.8%, 3.2%, 21.7% and 12.1% in F1, IoU, MR and insF1, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method can handle the adhesion of both adjacent objects and unclear boundaries effectively and capture clear and refined aquaculture boundaries

    Sea-Surface Object Detection Based on Electro-Optical Sensors: A Review

    Sea-surface object detection is critical for navigation safety of autonomous ships. Electrooptical (EO) sensors, such as video cameras, complement radar on board in detecting small obstacle sea-surface objects. Traditionally, researchers have used horizon detection, background subtraction, and foreground segmentation techniques to detect sea-surface objects. Recently, deep learning-based object detection technologies have been gradually applied to sea-surface object detection. This article demonstrates a comprehensive overview of sea-surface object-detection approaches where the advantages and drawbacks of each technique are compared, covering four essential aspects: EO sensors and image types, traditional object-detection methods, deep learning methods, and maritime datasets collection.
