    A Personalized System for Conversational Recommendations

    Searching for and making decisions about information is becoming increasingly difficult as the amount of information and number of choices increases. Recommendation systems help users find items of interest of a particular type, such as movies or restaurants, but are still somewhat awkward to use. Our solution is to take advantage of the complementary strengths of personalized recommendation systems and dialogue systems, creating personalized aides. We present a system -- the Adaptive Place Advisor -- that treats item selection as an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item attributes and the user responding. Individual, long-term user preferences are unobtrusively obtained in the course of normal recommendation dialogues and used to direct future conversations with the same user. We present a novel user model that influences both item search and the questions asked during a conversation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our system in significantly reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory item, as compared to a control group of users interacting with a non-adaptive version of the system

    Towards an Indexical Model of Situated Language Comprehension for Cognitive Agents in Physical Worlds

    We propose a computational model of situated language comprehension based on the Indexical Hypothesis that generates meaning representations by translating amodal linguistic symbols to modal representations of beliefs, knowledge, and experience external to the linguistic system. This Indexical Model incorporates multiple information sources, including perceptions, domain knowledge, and short-term and long-term experiences during comprehension. We show that exploiting diverse information sources can alleviate ambiguities that arise from contextual use of underspecific referring expressions and unexpressed argument alternations of verbs.     A Conceptual Model of Investor Behavior

    Based on a survey of behavioral finance literature, this paper presents a descriptive model of individual investor behavior in which investment decisions are seen as an iterative process of interactions between the investor and the investment environment. This investment process is influenced by a number of interdependent variables and driven by dual mental systems, the interplay of which contributes to boundedly rational behavior where investors use various heuristics and may exhibit behavioral biases. In the modeling tradition of cognitive science and intelligent systems, the investor is seen as a learning, adapting, and evolving entity that perceives the environment, processes information, acts upon it, and updates his or her internal states. This conceptual model can be used to build stylized representations of (classes of) individual investors, and further studied using the paradigm of agent-based artificial financial markets. By allowing us to implement individual investor behavior, to choose various market mechanisms, and to analyze the obtained asset prices, agent-based models can bridge the gap between the micro level of individual investor behavior and the macro level of aggregate market phenomena. Such systems are more useful when they personalize themselves to each user?s preferences, thus making the recommendation process more efficient and effective. In this paper, we present a new type of recommendation system that carries out a personalized dialogue with the user. This system ? the Adaptive Place Advisor ? treats item selection as an interactive, conversational process, with the program inquiring about item attributes and the user responding. The system incorporates a user model that contains item, attribute, and value preferences, which it updates during each conversation and maintains across sessions. The Place Advisor uses both the conversational context and the user model to retrieve candidate items from a case base. The system then continues to ask questions, using personalized heuristics to select which attribute to ask about next, presenting complete items to the user only when a few remain. We report experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of user modeling in reducing the time and number of interactions required to find a satisfactory item

    Optimizing Dialog Strategies for Conversational Agents Interacting in AmI Environments

Salamanca (Spain), 28-30 March 2012In this paper, we describe a conversational agent which provides academic information. The dialog model of this agent has been developed by means of a statistical methodology that automatically explores the dialog space and allows learning new enhanced dialog strategies from a dialog corpus. A dialog simulation technique has been applied to acquire data required to train the dialog model and then explore the new dialog strategies. A set of measures has also been defined to evaluate the dialog strategy. The results of the evaluation show how the dialogmodel deviates from the initially predefined strategy, allowing the conversational agent to tackle new situations and generate new coherent answers for the situations already present in the initial corpus.
