Argumentation for machine learning: a survey
Existing approaches using argumentation to aid or improve machine learning differ in the type of machine learning technique they consider, in their use of argumentation and in their choice of argumentation framework and semantics. This paper presents a survey of this relatively young field highlighting, in particular, its achievements to date, the applications it has been used for as well as the benefits brought about by the use of argumentation, with an eye towards its future
Extension-based Semantics of Abstract Dialectical Frameworks
One of the most prominent tools for abstract argumentation is the Dung's
framework, AF for short. It is accompanied by a variety of semantics including
grounded, complete, preferred and stable. Although powerful, AFs have their
shortcomings, which led to development of numerous enrichments. Among the most
general ones are the abstract dialectical frameworks, also known as the ADFs.
They make use of the so-called acceptance conditions to represent arbitrary
relations. This level of abstraction brings not only new challenges, but also
requires addressing existing problems in the field. One of the most
controversial issues, recognized not only in argumentation, concerns the
support cycles. In this paper we introduce a new method to ensure acyclicity of
the chosen arguments and present a family of extension-based semantics built on
it. We also continue our research on the semantics that permit cycles and fill
in the gaps from the previous works. Moreover, we provide ADF versions of the
properties known from the Dung setting. Finally, we also introduce a
classification of the developed sub-semantics and relate them to the existing

The Design of the Fifth Answer Set Programming Competition
Answer Set Programming (ASP) is a well-established paradigm of declarative
programming that has been developed in the field of logic programming and
nonmonotonic reasoning. Advances in ASP solving technology are customarily
assessed in competition events, as it happens for other closely-related
problem-solving technologies like SAT/SMT, QBF, Planning and Scheduling. ASP
Competitions are (usually) biennial events; however, the Fifth ASP Competition
departs from tradition, in order to join the FLoC Olympic Games at the Vienna
Summer of Logic 2014, which is expected to be the largest event in the history
of logic. This edition of the ASP Competition series is jointly organized by
the University of Calabria (Italy), the Aalto University (Finland), and the
University of Genova (Italy), and is affiliated with the 30th International
Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP 2014). It features a completely
re-designed setup, with novelties involving the design of tracks, the scoring
schema, and the adherence to a fixed modeling language in order to push the
adoption of the ASP-Core-2 standard. Benchmark domains are taken from past
editions, and best system packages submitted in 2013 are compared with new
versions and solvers.

Properties of ABA+ for Non-Monotonic Reasoning
We investigate properties of ABA+, a formalism that extends the well studied
structured argumentation formalism Assumption-Based Argumentation (ABA) with a
preference handling mechanism. In particular, we establish desirable properties
that ABA+ semantics exhibit. These pave way to the satisfaction by ABA+ of some
(arguably) desirable principles of preference handling in argumentation and
nonmonotonic reasoning, as well as non-monotonic inference properties of ABA+

Analysing development to shape the future
This article links theory and politics in a systematic way by proposing Is-Shall-Do as a didactical model for analysing a concrete conjuncture, relating it to the desired future in the form of a concrete utopia. Aware of structural limits and potential space of manoeuvre for political agency adequate practical steps to implement the concrete utopia are elaborated. The paper is divided in a first section which exposes three interwoven aspects of development: the the idea of a good life, the complexity and multi-dimensionality of development and the relationship of knowledge and power. Section two exposes the model of Is-Shall-Do abstractly, while section 3 exemplifies it by exposing the challenges for the European left. The analysis of conjuncture as a concrete analysis of a concrete situation is centred in Europe today on the topic of inequality produced by finance-based accumulation. As the concrete utopia of a good life , the authors propose the values of the French revolution, freedom, equality and solidarity which are unfulfilled promises of European development.
