Content Analysis of Acculturation Research in Counseling and Counseling Psychology: A 22-Year Review

    Get PDF
The authors conducted a 22-year (1988–2009) content analysis of quantitative empirical research that included acculturation and/or enculturation as a study variable(s). A total of 138 studies in 134 articles were systematically evaluated from 5 major American Psychological Association and American Counseling Association journals in counseling and counseling psychology, including Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology. To guide the analysis, the authors conceptualized acculturation/enculturation as a “bilinear” (i.e., developing cultural orientations to both majority and ethnic cultures) and “multidimensional” (i.e., across multiple areas such as behaviors, values, identity, and knowledge) cultural socialization process that occurs in interaction with “social contexts” (e.g., home, school, work, West Coast, Midwest). Findings include the patterns and trends of acculturation/enculturation research in (a) conceptualization and use of acculturation/enculturation variable(s), (b) research designs (e.g., sample characteristics, instruments, data collection, and analysis methods), (c) content areas, and (d) changes in total publications and trends over time. Additionally, meta-analyses were conducted on the relationship of acculturation/enculturation and a few key variables of mental health, adjustment, and well-being. Major findings and directions for future research are discussed

Documentation of AD/HD Diagnostic Practices in High Impact Korean Psychology and Psychiatry Journals

Diagnostic and sampling practices documented in studies of participants with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Korean journals were investigated. A reliable coding system was used under the supervision of a Korean psychology professor to analyze the diagnostic and sampling documentation practices in articles from high impact Korean journals. Interrater agreement was 88%. Articles in the Korean Journal of Clinical Psychology and the Journal of Korean Neuropsychiatry Association were reviewed and compared with one another and with archival data (Hartley, 2003) from leading American journals. Statistical comparisons were made between Korean psychology and psychiatry journals, Korean and American psychology journals, and Korean and American psychiatry journals. Results showed that important diagnostic practices and criteria are either not being employed or not being documented in Korean journals as well as in American journals. Discussion focuses on recommendations for the international research community

The Extent of Primary Prevention Research in the Community Psychology Literature: A Content Analysis

    Get PDF
Previous research and opinion suggested that community psychology had not realized its 1960’s commitment to primary prevention. This thesis employs theoretically-oriented content analysis to investigate the extent of the specialization’s commitment to this issue as reflected in research published in three journals: American Journal of Community Psychology (1973-1978), Journal of Community Psychology (1976), Community Mental Health Journal (1966, 1976). The data suggests that approximately 50% of this periodical literature focuses on some aspect of primary prevention. The implications of these findings are discussed

The Chinese translation of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity : factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and construct validity among Protestant Christians in Shanghai

    Get PDF
A sample of 131 Chinese Christians attending a Protestant church in Shanghai completed the Chinese translation of the Francis Scale of Attitude toward Christianity developed originally by Francis et al. (North American Journal of Psychology 4, 431–440, 2002) in Hong Kong. The data support the factor structure, internal the internal consistency reliability, and construct validity of this instrument and commend it for further use in studies conducted among Christians in China

Scholarly productivity, publication outlets and article themes of faculty in APA-accredited school psychology programs : 1995-1999

    Get PDF
This study examined the scholarly productivity of faculty in school psychology programs accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) from 1995-1999. In addition, the author identified the major journals in which faculty published their work and the article themes for the most productive programs. Faculty members’ productivity ratings were based on journal article abstracts identified in the PsycINFO database. Productivity ratings were computed primarily via an authorship credit formula in which first authors receive the greatest amount of credit and succeeding authors earn decreasing amounts of credit for publications. However, the actual number of publications also was computed for comparison with the authorship credit ratings. The analysis of the principal journal outlets for school psychology faculty profiled the primary journals in which school psychology faculty published their work. Data were divided into two journal sets: primary and secondary. The primary set included only the major school psychology journals and the secondary set included journals outside of the major school psychology journals

Why name generators with a fixed number of alters may be a pragmatic option for personal network analysis

Social network analysis (SNA) has grown exponentially in recent years, giving rise to methodological innovations in different scientific disciplines. In psychology, SNA has been incorporated into studies of individual personality differences and has generated novel areas, such as network psychometrics and network interventions. In community psychology, a recent review examined the use of network analysis in American Journal of Community Psychology publications (Neal & Neal, American Journal of Community Psychology , 2017, 60, 279). Based on their study, the authors advise researchers to avoid using the fixed-choice name generator when possible, as one of the five methodological recommendations proposed. In this essay, I explain how the recent increase of name generators with a fixed number of alters when studying personal networks is originally linked to an interest in describing structural properties. Second, I analyze the pragmatic contributions of this method: establishing a limit of alters a priori can entail advantages in terms of standardization and comparability of personal networks. Finally, to contextualize the methodological debate, I argue that personal networks represent the diversity of contexts in which the individual participates and are naturally integrated into community surveys
