    MobiThin management framework: design and evaluation

    In thin client computing, applications are executed on centralized servers. User input (e.g. keystrokes) is sent to a remote server which processes the event and sends the audiovisual output back to the client. This enables execution of complex applications from thin devices. Adopting virtualization technologies on the thin client server brings several advantages, e.g. dedicated environments for each user and interesting facilities such as migration tools. In this paper, a mobile thin client service offered to a large number of mobile users is designed. Pervasive mobile thin client computing requires an intelligent service management to guarantee a high user experience. Due to the dynamic environment, the service management framework has to monitor the environment and intervene when necessary (e.g. adapt thin client protocol settings, move a session from one server to another). A detailed performance analysis of the implemented prototype is presented. It is shown that the prototype can handle up to 700 requests/s to start the mobile thin client service. The prototype can make a decision for up to 700 monitor reports per second

    Benchmarking Distributed Stream Data Processing Systems

    The need for scalable and efficient stream analysis has led to the development of many open-source streaming data processing systems (SDPSs) with highly diverging capabilities and performance characteristics. While first initiatives try to compare the systems for simple workloads, there is a clear gap of detailed analyses of the systems' performance characteristics. In this paper, we propose a framework for benchmarking distributed stream processing engines. We use our suite to evaluate the performance of three widely used SDPSs in detail, namely Apache Storm, Apache Spark, and Apache Flink. Our evaluation focuses in particular on measuring the throughput and latency of windowed operations, which are the basic type of operations in stream analytics. For this benchmark, we design workloads based on real-life, industrial use-cases inspired by the online gaming industry. The contribution of our work is threefold. First, we give a definition of latency and throughput for stateful operators. Second, we carefully separate the system under test and driver, in order to correctly represent the open world model of typical stream processing deployments and can, therefore, measure system performance under realistic conditions. Third, we build the first benchmarking framework to define and test the sustainable performance of streaming systems.     Software-Driven and Virtualized Architectures for Scalable 5G Networks

    In this dissertation, we argue that it is essential to rearchitect 4G cellular core networks–sitting between the Internet and the radio access network–to meet the scalability, performance, and flexibility requirements of 5G networks. Today, there is a growing consensus among operators and research community that software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and mobile edge computing (MEC) paradigms will be the key ingredients of the next-generation cellular networks. Motivated by these trends, we design and optimize three core network architectures, SoftMoW, SoftBox, and SkyCore, for different network scales, objectives, and conditions. SoftMoW provides global control over nationwide core networks with the ultimate goal of enabling new routing and mobility optimizations. SoftBox attempts to enhance policy enforcement in statewide core networks to enable low-latency, signaling-efficient, and customized services for mobile devices. Sky- Core is aimed at realizing a compact core network for citywide UAV-based radio networks that are going to serve first responders in the future. Network slicing techniques make it possible to deploy these solutions on the same infrastructure in parallel. To better support mobility and provide verifiable security, these architectures can use an addressing scheme that separates network locations and identities with self-certifying, flat and non-aggregatable address components.     An App Performance Optimization Advisor for Mobile Device App Marketplaces

    On mobile phones, users and developers use apps official marketplaces serving as repositories of apps. The Google Play Store and Apple Store are the official marketplaces of Android and Apple products which offer more than a million apps. Although both repositories offer description of apps, information concerning performance is not available. Due to the constrained hardware of mobile devices, users and developers have to meticulously manage the resources available and they should be given access to performance information about apps. Even if this information was available, the selection of apps would still depend on user preferences and it would require a huge cognitive effort to make optimal decisions. Considering this fact we propose APOA, a recommendation system which can be implemented in any marketplace for helping users and developers to compare apps in terms of performance. APOA uses as input metric values of apps and a set of metrics to optimize. It solves an optimization problem and it generates optimal sets of apps for different user's context. We show how APOA works over an Android case study. Out of 140 apps, we define typical usage scenarios and we collect measurements of power, CPU, memory, and network usages to demonstrate the benefit of using APOA.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure

    A Multi-Objective Load Balancing System for Cloud Environments

Virtual machine (VM) live migration has been applied to system load balancing in cloud environments for the purpose of minimizing VM downtime and maximizing resource utilization. However, the migration process is both time-and cost-consuming as it requires the transfer of large size files or memory pages and consumes a huge amount of power and memory for the origin and destination physical machine (PM), especially for storage VM migration. This process also leads to VM downtime or slowdown. To deal with these shortcomings, we develop a Multi-objective Load Balancing (MO-LB) system that avoids VM migration and achieves system load balancing by transferring extra workload from a set of VMs allocated on an overloaded PM to other compatible VMs in the cluster with greater capacity. To reduce the time factor even more and optimize load balancing over a cloud cluster, MO-LB contains a CPU Usage Prediction (CUP) sub-system. The CUP not only predicts the performance of the VMs but also determines a set of appropriate VMs with the potential to execute the extra workload imposed on the VMs of an overloaded PM. We also design a Multi-Objective Task Scheduling optimization model using Particle Swarm Optimization to migrate the extra workload to the compatible VMs. The proposed method is evaluated using a VMware-vSphere-based private cloud in contrast to the VM migration technique applied by vMotion. The evaluation results show that the MO-LB system dramatically increases VM performance while reducing service response time, memory usage, job makespan, power consumption and the time taken for the load balancing process
