    Strategies Hospital Leaders Use in Implementing Electronic Medical Record Systems

    Some hospital leaders lacked strategies for implementing electronic medical record (EMR) systems. The purpose of this case study was to explore successful strategies that hospital leaders used in implementing EMR systems. The target population consisted of hospital leaders who succeeded in implementing EMR systems in a single healthcare organization located in the Los Angeles, California region. The conceptual framework used was Kotter\u27s (1996) eight-step process for leading change, and data were collected from face-to-face recorded interviews with 5 participants and from company documents related to EMR design and development. Data were analyzed through methodological triangulation of data types, and exploring codes exhibiting high frequencies to identify principal themes and subthemes. The data coding revealed three primary themes. The first theme related to strategies addressing training, technology, and catalyzing team effort. The second theme related to strategies focusing on employees\u27 concerns, and the third theme related to strategies for designing, developing, and disseminating workflow. The findings affirmed the conceptual framework of Kotter (1996) inasmuch as they showed that participating hospital leaders used one or more steps in Kotter\u27s eight-stage process of creating, implementing, and sustaining significant change. The findings could effect social change by improving the quality of healthcare services provided to patients, which can subsequently benefit patients\u27 families and communities through reducing the costs of healthcare

    Cyborgs as Frontline Service Employees: A Research Agenda

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Purpose This paper identifies and explores potential applications of cyborgian technologies within service contexts and how service providers may leverage the integration of cyborgian service actors into their service proposition. In doing so, the paper proposes a new category of ‘melded’ frontline service employees (FLEs), where advanced technologies become embodied within human actors. The paper presents potential opportunities and challenges that may arise through cyborg technological advancements and proposes a future research agenda related to these. Design/methodology This study draws on literature in the fields of services management, Artificial Intelligence [AI], robotics, Intelligence Augmentation [IA] and Human Intelligence [HIs] to conceptualise potential cyborgian applications. Findings The paper examines how cyborg bio- and psychophysical characteristics may significantly differentiate the nature of service interactions from traditional ‘unenhanced’ service interactions. In doing so, we propose ‘melding’ as a conceptual category of technological impact on FLEs. This category reflects the embodiment of emergent technologies not previously captured within existing literature on cyborgs. We examine how traditional roles of FLEs will be potentially impacted by the integration of emergent cyborg technologies, such as neural interfaces and implants, into service contexts before outlining future research directions related to these, specifically highlighting the range of ethical considerations. Originality/Value Service interactions with cyborg FLEs represent a new context for examining the potential impact of cyborgs. This paper explores how technological advancements will alter the individual capacities of humans to enable such employees to intuitively and empathetically create solutions to complex service challenges. In doing so, we augment the extant literature on cyborgs, such as the body hacking movement. The paper also outlines a research agenda to address the potential consequences of cyborgian integration

    Enhancing the EdTech Ecosystem in a British Columbia School District

    Technology has brought significant opportunities to education, but they are largely being lost. In many cases, spending on educational technology (EdTech) has not resulted in improved student outcomes. This Organizational Improvement Plan (OIP) addresses the problem of practice (PoP) of a lack of a framework and supports for K-12 teachers to effectively utilize EdTech in classrooms in the Canadian province of British Columbia (BC). Using a BC school district as a case study, I propose strategies for how leaders can craft and implement a change plan to enhance an EdTech ecosystem that best supports teachers and learners. Establishing a framework for effective use of EdTech in schools is complex and multifaceted. Investments in technology must support best pedagogical practices, and leaders must create conditions that boost teachers’ Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK; Mishra & Koehler, 2006). Leaders must adapt to shifting power dynamics in which teachers have new roles as emergent leaders. Optimizing the impact of EdTech in education requires a confluence of three key factors: technology, pedagogy, and excellent leadership. The change process must be iterative, ongoing, stakeholder-driven, and system-wide. This OIP blends Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider, 1986) principles with servant leadership (Greenleaf, 1970) and incorporates the district’s existing approaches into a hybrid transformational leadership model. I explore a three-pronged solution of EdTech capacity building for teachers, an EdTech vetting system, and a supportive leadership framework. This aims to raise TPACK, optimize EdTech usage, support wise pedagogy, and improve student outcomes

    Some hospital leaders are ineffective in implementing the electronic medical record (EMR) systems in the hospitals. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies hospital leaders use to successfully implement EMR systems. The target population consisted of hospital leaders and healthcare professionals from two hospitals who have successfully implemented EMR systems. The conceptual framework of this research study was Kotter\u27s 8-stage process for leading change, building on the model of an effective change management method. Data were collected from 5 interviewed participants and company documents related to strategies regarding the EMR system implementation. The results of reviewing open-ended interview questions and archived documents were analyzed using codes and themes to facilitate triangulation. Three primary themes were developed from the coded data: (a) strategies hospital leaders use to implement the EMR system, (b) strategies hospital leaders use to achieve quality and best practice, and (c) strategies hospital leaders use to manage change and resistance to change. Results revealed 4 steps for successful implementation: (1) creating a vision, (2) communicating the vision, (3) establishing strong leadership, and (4) consolidating gains. Utilizing the successful strategies hospital leaders use to implement the EMR systems could produce quality patient care, efficiencies in hospital operations, and reduced organizational operation cost. The findings could effect positive social change through delivery of quality health and patient care that results in community cost benefits and healthier patient lifestyles

    Combining Sociocultural Intelligence with Artificial Intelligence to Increase Organizational Cyber Security Provision through Enhanced Resilience

    Although artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can be deployed to improve cyber security management, not all managers understand the different types of AI/ML and how they are to be deployed alongside the benefits associated with sociocultural intelligence. The aim of this paper was to provide a context within which managers can better appreciate the role that sociocultural intelligence plays so that they can better utilize AI/ML to facilitate cyber threat intelligence (CTI). We focused our attention on explaining how different approaches to intelligence (i.e., the intelligence cycle (IC) and the critical thinking process (CTP)) can be combined and linked with cyber threat intelligence (CTI) so that AI/ML is used effectively. A small group interview was undertaken with five senior security managers based in a range of companies, all of whom had extensive security knowledge and industry experience. The findings suggest that organizational learning, transformational leadership, organizational restructuring, crisis management, and corporate intelligence are fundamental components of threat intelligence and provide a basis upon which a cyber threat intelligence cycle process (CTICP) can be developed to aid the resilience building process. The benefit of this is to increase organizational resilience by more firmly integrating the intelligence activities of the business so that a proactive approach to cyber security management is achieved

    Strategies to Improve the Youth Programs of Nonprofit Organizations

    Leaders of nonprofit organizations and researchers who focus on organizational performance affirm that improved youth programs are a crucial component of performance excellence and organizational sustainability. As seen through the lens of transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this single-case study was to explore the strategies used by 3 executive-level leaders/managers of a nonprofit organization in the southwestern region of the United States to equip families to overcome poverty, conquer homelessness, and achieve self-sufficiency. Data collected from semistructured interviews, organizational documents, and publicly available resources were manually coded and then analyzed. The 2 key themes that emerged were effective collaboration for strategy development and leveraging core competencies. Strategy development could help leaders of nonprofit organizations that serve children and families (a) increase enrollment and improve skills of program participants, (b) improve children\u27s behavior and engagement in the community, and (c) improve action plan completion. The implication of this study for positive social change includes the potential to help leaders of nonprofit organizations equip youth with job skills to decrease the cycle of homelessness
