    Processing hidden Markov models using recurrent neural networks for biological applications

    Philosophiae Doctor - PhDIn this thesis, we present a novel hybrid architecture by combining the most popular sequence recognition models such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Though sequence recognition problems could be potentially modelled through well trained HMMs, they could not provide a reasonable solution to the complicated recognition problems. In contrast, the ability of RNNs to recognize the complex sequence recognition problems is known to be exceptionally good. It should be noted that in the past, methods for applying HMMs into RNNs have been developed by other researchers. However, to the best of our knowledge, no algorithm for processing HMMs through learning has been given. Taking advantage of the structural similarities of the architectural dynamics of the RNNs and HMMs, in this work we analyze the combination of these two systems into the hybrid architecture. To this end, the main objective of this study is to improve the sequence recognition/classi_cation performance by applying a hybrid neural/symbolic approach. In particular, trained HMMs are used as the initial symbolic domain theory and directly encoded into appropriate RNN architecture, meaning that the prior knowledge is processed through the training of RNNs. Proposed algorithm is then implemented on sample test beds and other real time biological applications

    Malay articulation system for early screening diagnostic using hidden markov model and genetic algorithm

    Speech recognition is an important technology and can be used as a great aid for individuals with sight or hearing disabilities today. There are extensive research interest and development in this area for over the past decades. However, the prospect in Malaysia regarding the usage and exposure is still immature even though there is demand from the medical and healthcare sector. The aim of this research is to assess the quality and the impact of using computerized method for early screening of speech articulation disorder among Malaysian such as the omission, substitution, addition and distortion in their speech. In this study, the statistical probabilistic approach using Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been adopted with newly designed Malay corpus for articulation disorder case following the SAMPA and IPA guidelines. Improvement is made at the front-end processing for feature vector selection by applying the silence region calibration algorithm for start and end point detection. The classifier had also been modified significantly by incorporating Viterbi search with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to obtain high accuracy in recognition result and for lexical unit classification. The results were evaluated by following National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) benchmarking. Based on the test, it shows that the recognition accuracy has been improved by 30% to 40% using Genetic Algorithm technique compared with conventional technique. A new corpus had been built with verification and justification from the medical expert in this study. In conclusion, computerized method for early screening can ease human effort in tackling speech disorders and the proposed Genetic Algorithm technique has been proven to improve the recognition performance in terms of search and classification task

    Using MapReduce Streaming for Distributed Life Simulation on the Cloud

    Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable to various lattice-based a-life models. We implement and empirically evaluate our algorithms’ performance on Amazon’s Elastic MR cloud. Our experiments demonstrate that a single MR optimization technique called strip partitioning can reduce the execution time of continuous life simulations by 64%. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to propose and evaluate MR streaming algorithms for lattice-based simulations. When their level of abstraction raises to have a better discernment of the domain at hand, their representation gets increasingly demanding for computational and data resources. On the other hand, High Performance Computing typically entails the effective use of parallel and distributed processing units coupled with efficient storage, communication and visualisation systems to underpin complex data-intensive applications in distinct scientific and technical domains. It is then arguably required to have a seamless interaction of High Performance Computing with Modelling and Simulation in order to store, compute, analyse, and visualise large data sets in science and engineering.     This Special Issue, entitled "Women in Artificial Intelligence" includes 17 papers from leading women scientists. The papers cover a broad scope of research areas within Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, perception, reasoning or planning, among others. The papers have applications to relevant fields, such as human health, finance, or education. It is worth noting that the Issue includes three papers that deal with different aspects of gender bias in Artificial Intelligence. All the papers have a woman as the first author. We can proudly say that these women are from countries worldwide, such as France, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, Australia, Bangladesh, Yemen, Romania, India, Cuba, Bangladesh and Spain. In conclusion, apart from its intrinsic scientific value as a Special Issue, combining interesting research works, this Special Issue intends to increase the invisibility of women in AI, showing where they are, what they do, and how they contribute to developments in Artificial Intelligence from their different places, positions, research branches and application fields. We planned to issue this book on the on Ada Lovelace Day (11/10/2022), a date internationally dedicated to the first computer programmer, a woman who had to fight the gender difficulties of her times, in the XIX century. We also thank the publisher for making this possible, thus allowing for this book to become a part of the international activities dedicated to celebrating the value of women in ICT all over the world.
