On using gait to enhance frontal face extraction

Visual surveillance finds increasing deployment formonitoring urban environments. Operators need to be able to determine identity from surveillance images and often use face recognition for this purpose. In surveillance environments, it is necessary to handle pose variation of the human head, low frame rate, and low resolution input images. We describe the first use of gait to enable face acquisition and recognition, by analysis of 3-D head motion and gait trajectory, with super-resolution analysis. We use region- and distance-based refinement of head pose estimation. We develop a direct mapping to relate the 2-D image with a 3-D model. In gait trajectory analysis, we model the looming effect so as to obtain the correct face region. Based on head position and the gait trajectory, we can reconstruct high-quality frontal face images which are demonstrated to be suitable for face recognition. The contributions of this research include the construction of a 3-D model for pose estimation from planar imagery and the first use of gait information to enhance the face extraction process allowing for deployment in surveillance scenario

    Forensic Video Analytic Software

Law enforcement officials heavily depend on Forensic Video Analytic (FVA) Software in their evidence extraction process. However present-day FVA software are complex, time consuming, equipment dependent and expensive. Developing countries struggle to gain access to this gateway to a secure haven. The term forensic pertains the application of scientific methods to the investigation of crime through post-processing, whereas surveillance is the close monitoring of real-time feeds. The principle objective of this Final Year Project was to develop an efficient and effective FVA Software, addressing the shortcomings through a stringent and systematic review of scholarly research papers, online databases and legal documentation. The scope spans multiple object detection, multiple object tracking, anomaly detection, activity recognition, tampering detection, general and specific image enhancement and video synopsis. Methods employed include many machine learning techniques, GPU acceleration and efficient, integrated architecture development both for real-time and postprocessing. For this CNN, GMM, multithreading and OpenCV C++ coding were used. The implications of the proposed methodology would rapidly speed up the FVA process especially through the novel video synopsis research arena. This project has resulted in three research outcomes Moving Object Based Collision Free Video Synopsis, Forensic and Surveillance Analytic Tool Architecture and Tampering Detection Inter-Frame Forgery. The results include forensic and surveillance panel outcomes with emphasis on video synopsis and Sri Lankan context. Principal conclusions include the optimization and efficient algorithm integration to overcome limitations in processing power, memory and compromise between real-time performance and accuracy.Comment: The Forensic Video Analytic Software demo video is available https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsZlYKQxSk

Due to importance of security in the society, monitoring activities and recognizing specific people through surveillance video camera is playing an important role. One of the main issues in such activity rises from the fact that cameras do not meet the resolution requirement for many face recognition algorithms. In order to solve this issue, in this work we are proposing a new system which super resolve the image. First, we are using sparse representation with the specific dictionary involving many natural and facial images to super resolve images. As a second method, we are using deep learning convulutional network. Image super resolution is followed by Hidden Markov Model and Singular Value Decomposition based face recognition. The proposed system has been tested on many well-known face databases such as FERET, HeadPose, and Essex University databases as well as our recently introduced iCV Face Recognition database (iCV-F). The experimental results shows that the recognition rate is increasing considerably after applying the super resolution by using facial and natural image dictionary. In addition, we are also proposing a system for analysing people movement on surveillance video. People including faces are detected by using Histogram of Oriented Gradient features and Viola-jones algorithm. Multi-target tracking system with discrete-continuouos energy minimization tracking system is then used to track people. The tracking data is then in turn used to get information about visited and passed locations and face recognition results for tracked people
