    5G 3GPP-like Channel Models for Outdoor Urban Microcellular and Macrocellular Environments

    For the development of new 5G systems to operate in bands up to 100 GHz, there is a need for accurate radio propagation models at these bands that currently are not addressed by existing channel models developed for bands below 6 GHz. This document presents a preliminary overview of 5G channel models for bands up to 100 GHz. These have been derived based on extensive measurement and ray tracing results across a multitude of frequencies from 6 GHz to 100 GHz, and this document describes an initial 3D channel model which includes: 1) typical deployment scenarios for urban microcells (UMi) and urban macrocells (UMa), and 2) a baseline model for incorporating path loss, shadow fading, line of sight probability, penetration and blockage models for the typical scenarios.     Contributions to measurement-based dynamic MIMO channel modeling and propagation parameter estimation

    Multiantenna (MIMO) transceivers are a key technology in emerging broadband wireless communication systems since they facilitate achieving the required high data rates and reliability. In order to develop and study the performance of MIMO systems, advanced channel modeling that captures also the spatial characteristics of the radio wave propagation is required. This thesis introduces several contributions in the area of measurement-based modeling of wireless MIMO propagation channels. Measurement based modeling provides realistic characterization of the space, time and frequency dependency of the physical layer for both MIMO transceiver design and network planning. The focus in this thesis is on modeling and parametric estimation of mobile MIMO radio propagation channels. First, an overview of MIMO channel modeling approaches is given. A hybrid model for characterizing the spatio-temporal structure of measured MIMO channels consisting of a superposition of double-directional, specular-like propagation paths, and a stochastic process describing the diffuse scattering is formulated. State-space modeling approach is introduced in order to capture the dynamic channel properties from mobile channel sounding measurements. Extended Kalman filter (EKF) is employed for the sequential estimation problem and also statistical hypothesis testing for adjusting the model order are introduced. Due to the improved dynamic model of the mobile radio channel, the EKF approach outperforms maximum likelihood (ML) based batch solutions both in terms of lower estimation error as well as computational complexity. Finally, tensor representation for modeling multidimensional MIMO channels is considered and a novel sequential unfolding SVD (SUSVD) tensor decomposition is introduced. The SUSVD is an orthogonal tensor decomposition having several important applications in signal processing. The advantages of applying the SUSVD instead of other well known tensor models such as parallel factorization and Tucker-models, are illustrated using application examples in channel sounding data processing

    A predefined channel coefficients library for vehicle-to-vehicle communications

    It is noticeable that most of VANETs communications tests are assessed through simulation. In a majority of simulation results, the physical layer is often affected by an apparent lack of realism. Therefore, vehicular channel model has become a critical issue in the field of intelligent transport systems (ITS). To overcome the lack of realism problem, a more robust channel model is needed to reflect the reality. This paper provides an open access, predefined channel coefficients library. The library is based on 2x2 and 4x4 Multiple – Input – Multiple – Output (MIMO) systems in V2V communications, using a spatial channel model extended SCME which will help to reduce the overall simulation time. In addition, it provides a more realistic channel model for V2V communications; considering: over ranges of speeds, distances, multipath signals, sub-path signals, different angle of arrivals, different angle departures, no line of sight and line of sight. An intensive evaluation process has taken place to validate the library and acceptance results are produced. Having an open access predefined library, enables the researcher at relevant communities to test and evaluate several complicated vehicular communications scenarios in a wider manners with less time and efforts

    Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Wireless Communications: Principles, Challenges, and Opportunities

    Recently there has been a flurry of research on the use of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks to create smart radio environments. In a smart radio environment, surfaces are capable of manipulating the propagation of incident electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner to actively alter the channel realization, which turns the wireless channel into a controllable system block that can be optimized to improve overall system performance. In this article, we provide a tutorial overview of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) for wireless communications. We describe the working principles of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) and elaborate on different candidate implementations using metasurfaces and reflectarrays. We discuss the channel models suitable for both implementations and examine the feasibility of obtaining accurate channel estimates. Furthermore, we discuss the aspects that differentiate RIS optimization from precoding for traditional MIMO arrays highlighting both the arising challenges and the potential opportunities associated with this emerging technology.     A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

    In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure. Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns, large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future research directions for UAV communication scenarios
