    Change of basis for m-primary ideals in one and two variables

    Following recent work by van der Hoeven and Lecerf (ISSAC 2017), we discuss the complexity of linear mappings, called untangling and tangling by those authors, that arise in the context of computations with univariate polynomials. We give a slightly faster tangling algorithm and discuss new applications of these techniques.     Sparse Polynomial Interpolation and Testing

    Interpolation is the process of learning an unknown polynomial f from some set of its evaluations. We consider the interpolation of a sparse polynomial, i.e., where f is comprised of a small, bounded number of terms. Sparse interpolation dates back to work in the late 18th century by the French mathematician Gaspard de Prony, and was revitalized in the 1980s due to advancements by Ben-Or and Tiwari, Blahut, and Zippel, amongst others. Sparse interpolation has applications to learning theory, signal processing, error-correcting codes, and symbolic computation. Closely related to sparse interpolation are two decision problems. Sparse polynomial identity testing is the problem of testing whether a sparse polynomial f is zero from its evaluations. Sparsity testing is the problem of testing whether f is in fact sparse. We present effective probabilistic algebraic algorithms for the interpolation and testing of sparse polynomials. These algorithms assume black-box evaluation access, whereby the algorithm may specify the evaluation points. We measure algorithmic costs with respect to the number and types of queries to a black-box oracle. Building on previous work by Garg–Schost and Giesbrecht–Roche, we present two methods for the interpolation of a sparse polynomial modelled by a straight-line program (SLP): a sequence of arithmetic instructions. We present probabilistic algorithms for the sparse interpolation of an SLP, with cost softly-linear in the sparsity of the interpolant: its number of nonzero terms. As an application of these techniques, we give a multiplication algorithm for sparse polynomials, with cost that is sensitive to the size of the output. Multivariate interpolation reduces to univariate interpolation by way of Kronecker substitu- tion, which maps an n-variate polynomial f to a univariate image with degree exponential in n. We present an alternative method of randomized Kronecker substitutions, whereby one can more efficiently reconstruct a sparse interpolant f from multiple univariate images of considerably reduced degree. In error-correcting interpolation, we suppose that some bounded number of evaluations may be erroneous. We present an algorithm for error-correcting interpolation of polynomials that are sparse under the Chebyshev basis. In addition we give a method which reduces sparse Chebyshev-basis interpolation to monomial-basis interpolation. Lastly, we study the class of Boolean functions that admit a sparse Fourier representation. We give an analysis of Levin’s Sparse Fourier Transform algorithm for such functions. Moreover, we give a new algorithm for testing whether a Boolean function is Fourier-sparse. This method reduces sparsity testing to homomorphism testing, which in turn may be solved by the Blum–Luby–Rubinfeld linearity test

    Multilinear Polynomial Systems: Root Isolation and Bit Complexity

We focus on algorithms and their Boolean complexity for computing isolating hyperboxes for all the isolated complex roots of well-constrained, unmixed systems of multilinear polynomials based on resultant methods. We enumerate all expressions of the multihomogeneous (or multigraded) resultant of such systems as a determinant of Sylvester-like matrices, aka generalized Sylvester matrices. We construct these matrices by means of Weyman homological complexes, which generalize the Cayley-Koszul complex. The computation of the determinant of the resultant matrix is the bottleneck for the overall complexity. We exploit the quasi-Toeplitz structure to reduce the problem to efficient matrix-vector multiplication, which corresponds to multivariate polynomial multiplication, by extending the seminal work on Macaulay matrices of Canny, Kaltofen, and Yagati [9] to the multi-homogeneous case. We compute a rational univariate representation of the roots, based on the primitive element method. In the case of 0-dimensional systems we present a Monte Carlo algorithm with probability of success 1 − 1/2^r, for a given r ≥ 1, and bit complexity O_B (n^2 D^(4+e) (n^(N +1) + τ) + n D^(2+e) r (D +r)) for any e> 0, where n is the number of variables, D equals the multilinear Bézout bound, N is the number of variable subsets, and τ is the maximum coefficient bitsize. We present an algorithmic variant to compute the isolated roots of overdetermined and positive-dimensional systems. Thus our algorithms and complexity analysis apply in general with no assumptions on the input

    On the Bit Complexity of Solving Bilinear Polynomial Systems

    International audienceWe bound the Boolean complexity of computing isolating hyperboxes for all complex roots of systems of bilinear polynomials. The resultant of such systems admits a family of determinantal Sylvester-type formulas, which we make explicit by means of homological complexes. The computation of the determinant of the resultant matrix is a bottleneck for the overall complexity. We exploit the quasi-Toeplitz structure to reduce the problem to efficient matrix-vector products, corresponding to multivariate polynomial multiplication. For zero-dimensional systems, we arrive at a primitive element and a rational univariate representation of the roots. The overall bit complexity of our probabilistic algorithm is O_B(n^4 D^4 + n^2 D^4 τ), where n is the number of variables, D equals the bilinear Bezout bound, and τ is the maximum coefficient bitsize. Finally, a careful infinitesimal symbolic perturbation of the system allows us to treat degenerate and positive dimensional systems, thus making our algorithms and complexity analysis applicable to the general case

    Separating linear forms and Rational Univariate Representations of bivariate systems

    International audienceWe address the problem of solving systems of bivariate polynomials with integer coefficients. We first present an algorithm for computing a separating linear form of such systems, that is a linear combination of the variables that takes different values when evaluated at distinct (complex) solutions of the system. In other words, a separating linear form defines a shear of the coordinate system that sends the algebraic system in generic position, in the sense that no two distinct solutions are vertically aligned. The computation of such linear forms is at the core of most algorithms that solve algebraic systems by computing rational parameterizations of the solutions and, moreover, the computation of a separating linear form is the bottleneck of these algorithms, in terms of worst-case bit complexity. Given two bivariate polynomials of total degree at most dd with integer coefficients of bitsize at most~τ\tau, our algorithm computes a separating linear form {of bitsize O(logd)O(\log d)} in \comp\ bit operations in the worst case, which decreases by a factor d2d^2 the best known complexity for this problem (where \sO refers to the complexity where polylogarithmic factors are omitted and OBO_B refers to the bit complexity). We then present simple polynomial formulas for the Rational Univariate Representations (RURs) of such systems. {This yields that, given a separating linear form of bitsize O(logd)O(\log d), the corresponding RUR can be computed in worst-case bit complexity \sOB(d^7+d^6\tau) and that its coefficients have bitsize \sO(d^2+d\tau).} We show in addition that isolating boxes of the solutions of the system can be computed from the RUR with \sOB(d^{8}+d^7\tau) bit operations in the worst case. Finally, we show how a RUR can be used to evaluate the sign of a bivariate polynomial (of degree at most dd and bitsize at most τ\tau) at one real solution of the system in \sOB(d^{8}+d^7\tau) bit operations and at all the Θ(d2)\Theta(d^2) real solutions in only O(d)O(d) times that for one solution

We also present probabilistic Las-Vegas variants of our two first algorithms, which have expected bit complecity O~B(d5+d4τ)\widetilde{O}_B(d^5+d^4\tau). A key ingredient of our proofs of complexity is an amortized analysis of the triangular decomposition algorithm via subresultants, which is of independent interest

    Algorithms in Intersection Theory in the Plane

    This thesis presents an algorithm to find the local structure of intersections of plane curves. More precisely, we address the question of describing the scheme of the quotient ring of a bivariate zero-dimensional ideal IK[x,y]I\subseteq \mathbb K[x,y], \textit{i.e.} finding the points (maximal ideals of K[x,y]/I\mathbb K[x,y]/I) and describing the regular functions on those points. A natural way to address this problem is via Gr\"obner bases as they reduce the problem of finding the points to a problem of factorisation, and the sheaf of rings of regular functions can be studied with those bases through the division algorithm and localisation. Let IK[x,y]I\subseteq \mathbb K[x,y] be an ideal generated by F\mathcal F, a subset of A[x,y]\mathbb A[x,y] with AK\mathbb A\hookrightarrow\mathbb K and K\mathbb K a field. We present an algorithm that features a quadratic convergence to find a Gr\"obner basis of II or its primary component at the origin. We introduce an m\mathfrak m-adic Newton iteration to lift the lexicographic Gr\"obner basis of any finite intersection of zero-dimensional primary components of II if mA\mathfrak m\subseteq \mathbb A is a \textit{good} maximal ideal. It relies on a structural result about the syzygies in such a basis due to Conca \textit{\&} Valla (2008), from which arises an explicit map between ideals in a stratum (or Gr\"obner cell) and points in the associated moduli space. We also qualify what makes a maximal ideal m\mathfrak m suitable for our filtration. When the field K\mathbb K is \textit{large enough}, endowed with an Archimedean or ultrametric valuation, and admits a fraction reconstruction algorithm, we use this result to give a complete m\mathfrak m-adic algorithm to recover G\mathcal G, the Gr\"obner basis of II. We observe that previous results of Lazard that use Hermite normal forms to compute Gr\"obner bases for ideals with two generators can be generalised to a set of nn generators. We use this result to obtain a bound on the height of the coefficients of G\mathcal G and to control the probability of choosing a \textit{good} maximal ideal mA\mathfrak m\subseteq\mathbb A to build the m\mathfrak m-adic expansion of G\mathcal G. Inspired by Pardue (1994), we also give a constructive proof to characterise a Zariski open set of GL2(K)\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb K) (with action on K[x,y]\mathbb K[x,y]) that changes coordinates in such a way as to ensure the initial term ideal of a zero-dimensional II becomes Borel-fixed when K|\mathbb K| is sufficiently large. This sharpens our analysis to obtain, when A=Z\mathbb A=\mathbb Z or A=k[t]\mathbb A=k[t], a complexity less than cubic in terms of the dimension of Q[x,y]/G\mathbb Q[x,y]/\langle \mathcal G\rangle and softly linear in the height of the coefficients of G\mathcal G. We adapt the resulting method and present the analysis to find the x,y\langle x,y\rangle-primary component of II. We also discuss the transition towards other primary components via linear mappings, called \emph{untangling} and \emph{tangling}, introduced by van der Hoeven and Lecerf (2017). The two maps form one isomorphism to find points with an isomorphic local structure and, at the origin, bind them. We give a slightly faster tangling algorithm and discuss new applications of these techniques. We show how to extend these ideas to bivariate settings and give a bound on the arithmetic complexity for certain algebras

    Bivariate systems and topology of plane curves: algebraic and numerical methods

    The work presented in this thesis belongs to the domain of non-linear computational geometry in lowdimension. More precisely it focuses on solving bivariate systems and computing the topology of curvesin the plane. When the input is given by polynomials, the natural tools come from computer algebra.Our contributions are algorithms proven efficient in a deterministic or a Las Vegas settings together witha practical efficient software for topology certified drawing of a plane algebraic curve. When the input isnot restricted to be polynomials but given by interval functions, we design algorithms based on certifiednumerical approches using subdivision and interval arithmetic. The input is then required to fulfill somegeneric assumptions and our algorithms are certified in the sense that they terminate if and only if theassumptions are satisfied.Le travail présenté dans cette thèse appartient au domaine de la géométrie computationnelle non linéaireen petite dimension. Plus précisément, il se concentre sur la résolution de systèmes bivariés et le calcul dela topologie des courbes dans le plan.
