    Survey on Photo-Voltaic Powered Interleaved Converter System

    Renewable energy is the best solution to meet the growing demand for energy in the country. The solar energy is considered as the most promising energy by the researchers due to its abundant availability, eco-friendly nature, long lasting nature, wide range of application and above all it is a maintenance free system. The energy absorbed by the earth can satisfy 15000 times of today’s total energy demand and its hundred times more than that our conventional energy like coal and other fossil fuels. Though, there are overwhelming advantages in solar energy, It has few drawbacks as well such as its low conversion ratio, inconsistent supply of energy due to variation in the sun light, less efficiency due to ripples in the converter, time dependent and, above all, high capitation cost. These aforementioned flaws have been addressed by the researchers in order to extract maximum energy and attain hundred percentage benefits of this heavenly resource. So, this chapter presents a comprehensive investigation based on photo voltaic (PV) system requirements with the following constraints such as system efficiency, system gain, dynamic response, switching losses are investigated.     Review of Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies, Configurations, and Architectures

    Electric Vehicles (EVs) are projected to be one of the major contributors to energy transition in the global transportation due to their rapid expansion. The EVs will play a vital role in achieving a sustainable transportation system by reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, high level of EVs integration into the distribution grid has introduced many challenges for the power grid operation, safety, and network planning due to the increase in load demand, power quality impacts and power losses. An increasing fleet of electric mobility requires the advanced charging systems to enhance charging efficiency and utility grid support. Innovative EV charging technologies are obtaining much attention in recent research studies aimed at strengthening EV adoption while providing ancillary services. Therefore, analysis of the status of EV charging technologies is significant to accelerate EV adoption with advanced control strategies to discover a remedial solution for negative grid impacts, enhance desired charging efficiency and grid support. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current deployment of EV charging systems, international standards, charging configurations, EV battery technologies, architecture of EV charging stations, and emerging technical challenges. The charging systems require a dedicated converter topology, a control strategy and international standards for charging and grid interconnection to ensure optimum operation and enhance grid support. An overview of different charging systems in terms of onboard and off-board chargers, AC-DC and DC-DC converter topologies, and AC and DC-based charging station architectures are evaluated

    Investigation of a GaN-Based Power Supply Topology Utilizing Solid State Transformer for Low Power Applications

    Gallium nitride (GaN) power devices exhibit a much lower gate capacitance for a similar on-resistance than its silicon counterparts, making it highly desirable for high-frequency operation in switching converters, which leads to their significant benefits on power density, cost, and system volume. High-density switching converters are being realized with GaN power devices due to their high switching speeds that reduce the size of energy-storage circuit components. The purpose of this dissertation research is to investigate a new isolated GaN AC/DC switching converter based on solid-state transformer configuration with a totem-pole power factor corrector (PFC) front-end, a half-bridge series-resonant converter (SRC) for power conversion, and a current-doubler rectifier (CDR) at its output. A new equivalent circuit model for the converter is constructed consisting of a loss-free resistor model for the PFC rectifier with first harmonic approximation model for the SRC and the CDR. Then, state-space analysis is performed to derive the converter transfer function in order to design the controllers to yield sufficient phase margins. The converter offers the advantages of voltage regulation feature of the solid-state transformer, low harmonics and close-to-unity power factor of the PFC rectifier, soft-switching of the half-bridge SRC, reduced size of the high-frequency transformer, and smaller leakage inductance of the CDR which is used for low-voltage high-current applications as the CDR draws half of the load current in the transformer secondary side yielding less copper losses. A high-frequency nanocrystalline toroid transformer, based on a modified equation to determine its leakage inductance, is designed and fabricated to satisfy the performance specifications of the converter. A meticulously planned gate driving strategy together with a Kelvin-source return circuitry is used to mitigate Miller effects, minimize gate ringing, and minimize the parasitics of the pull-down and pull-up loops of the converter. A new programming method that combines MATLAB Simulink embedded coder with code composer studio for the TMS320F28335 digital signal processor (DSP) controller is developed and demonstrated. Finally, the GaN-based AC/DC converter is experimentally verified for a 120Vac to 48Vdc/60Vdc conversion operating at 100 kHz for various loadings

    Vehicle electrification: technologies, challenges and a global perspective for smart grids

    Nowadays, due to economic and climate concerns, the private transportation sector is shifting for the vehicle electrification, mainly supported by electric and hybrid plug-in vehicles. For this new reality, new challenges about operation modes are emerging, demanding a cooperative and dynamic operation with the electrical power grid, guaranteeing a stable integration without omitting the power quality for the grid-side and for the vehicle-side. Besides the operation modes, new attractive and complementary technologies are offered by the vehicle electrification in the context of smart grids, which are valid for both on-board and off-board systems. In this perspective, this book chapter presents a global perspective and deals with challenges for the vehicle electrification, covering the key technologies toward a sustainable future.     Analysis and Design of 3-Phase Unfolding Based AC-DC Battery Chargers

    This thesis presents the analysis and design of high-efficiency battery chargers for heavy duty EV applications. The rise in popularity of the electric vehicles (EVs) due to their increased efficiency over conventional internal combustion engines, has driven the need for more battery charging infrastructure. Furthermore, heavy duty vehicles are also being converted to electric to fill needs such as public transportation via bus fleets as well as cargo delivery via semi-trucks. Such heavy duty vehicles require more energy than personal transportation vehicles and thus require larger battery packs. To charge heavy duty battery packs in the same amount of time as the typical EV, higher power chargers are required. Energy is distributed through the grid network, and a battery charger is converts the grid power into a regulated output for battery charging. The novel battery charging designs investigated in this thesis are classified differently than traditional designs because they have fewer switching stages to convert the power. The unique approach taken allows these designs to have higher efficiency overall than a traditional battery charger design. The new converter designs are refereed to as the three-level (3L) asymmetrical full bridge (3LAFB)and 3L asymmetrical dual active bridge (3LADAB). The operation of each converter is briefly discussed to help develop context for the hardware and controller designs. The controller design for the 3LAFB topology is developed to explain the control objectives of the 3-port dc-dc converter. Hardware results prototype designs are presented to validate proposed chargers and controller designs.     The demands of high performance cloud computation and internet services have increased in recent decades. These demands have driven the expansion of existing data centers and the construction of new data centers. The high costs of data center downtime are pushing designers to provide high reliability power supplies. Thus, there are significant research questions and challenges to design efficient and environmentally friendly data centers with address increasing energy prices and distributed energy developments. This dissertation work aims to study and investigate the suitable technologies of power interface and system level configuration for high efficiency and reliable data centers. A 400 V DC-powered data center integrated with solar power and hybrid energy storage is proposed to reduce the power loss and cable cost in data centers. A cascaded totem-pole bridgeless PFC converter to convert grid ac voltage to the 400 V dc voltage is proposed in this work. Three main control strategies are developed for the power converters. First, a model predictive control is developed for the cascaded totem-pole bridgeless PFC converter. This control provides stable transient performance and high power efficiency. Second, a power loss model based dual-phase-shift control is applied for the efficiency improvement of dual-active bridge converter. Third, an optimized maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for solar power and a hybrid energy storage unit (HESU) control are given in this research work. The HESU consists of battery and ultracapacitor packs. The ultracapacitor can improve the battery lifetime and reduce any transients affecting grid side operation. The large signal model of a typical solar power integrated datacenter is built to analyze the system stability with various conditions. The MATLAB/Simulink™-based simulations are used to identify the stable region of the data center power supply. This can help to analyze the sensitivity of the circuit parameters, which include the cable inductance, resistance, and dc bus capacitance. This work analyzes the system dynamic response under different operating conditions to determine the stability of the dc bus voltage. The system stability under different percentages of solar power and hybrid energy storage integrated in the data center are also investigated

    Optimization And Design Of Photovoltaic Micro-inverter

    To relieve energy shortage and environmental pollution issues, renewable energy, especially PV energy has developed rapidly in the last decade. The micro-inverter systems, with advantages in dedicated PV power harvest, flexible system size, simple installation, and enhanced safety characteristics are the future development trend of the PV power generation systems. The double-stage structure which can realize high efficiency with nice regulated sinusoidal waveforms is the mainstream for the micro-inverter. This thesis studied a double stage micro-inverter system. Considering the intermittent nature of PV power, a PFC was analyzed to provide additional electrical power to the system. When the solar power is less than the load required, PFC can drag power from the utility grid. In the double stage micro-inverter, the DC/DC stage was realized by a LLC converter, which could realize soft switching automatically under frequency modulation. However it has a complicated relationship between voltage gain and load. Thus conventional variable step P&O MPPT techniques for PWM converter were no longer suitable for the LLC converter. To solve this problem, a novel MPPT was proposed to track MPP efficiently. Simulation and experimental results verified the effectiveness of the proposed MPPT. The DC/AC stage of the micro-inverter was realized by a BCM inverter. With duty cycle and frequency modulation, ZVS was achieved through controlling the inductor current bi-directional in every switching cycle. This technique required no additional resonant components and could be employed for low power applications on conventional full-bridge and half-bridge inverter topologies. Three different current mode control schemes were derived from the basic theory of the proposed technique. They were referred to as Boundary Current Mode (BCM), Variable Hysteresis Current Mode (VHCM), and Constant Hysteresis Current Mode (CHCM) individually in this paper with their advantages and disadvantages analyzed in detail. Simulation and experimental iv results demonstrated the feasibilities of the proposed soft-switching technique with the digital control schemes. The PFC converter was applied by a single stage Biflyback topology, which combined the advantages of single stage PFC and flyback topology together, with further advantages in low intermediate bus voltage and current stresses. A digital controller without current sampling requirement was proposed based on the specific topology. To reduce the voltage spike caused by the leakage inductor, a novel snubber cell combining soft switching technique with snubber technique together was proposed. Simulation and experimental waveforms illustrated the same as characteristics as the theoretical analysis. In summary, the dissertation analyzed each power stage of photovoltaic micro-inverter system from efficiency and effectiveness optimization perspectives. Moreover their advantages were compared carefully with existed topologies and control techniques. Simulation and experiment results were provided to support the theoretical analysis

    GaN-Based High Efficiency Transmitter for Multiple-Receiver Wireless Power Transfer

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) has attracted great attention from industry and academia due to high charging flexibility. However, the efficiency of WPT is lower and the cost is higher than the wired power transfer approaches. Efforts including converter optimization, power delivery architecture improvement, and coils have been made to increase system efficiency.In this thesis, new power delivery architectures in the WPT of consumer electronics have been proposed to improve the overall system efficiency and increase the power density.First, a two-stage transmitter architecture is designed for a 100 W WPT system. After comparing with other topologies, the front-end ac-dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier employs a totem-pole rectifier. A full bridge 6.78 MHz resonant inverter is designed for the subsequent stage. An impedance matching network provides constant transmitter coil current. The experimental results verify the high efficiency, high PF, and low total harmonic distortion (THD).Then, a single-stage transmitter is derived based on the verified two-stage structure. By integration of the PFC rectifier and full bridge inverter, two GaN FETs are saved and high efficiency is maintained. The integrated DCM operated PFC rectifier provides high PF and low THD. By adopting a control scheme, the transmitter coil current and power are regulated. A simple auxiliary circuit is employed to improve the light load efficiency. The experimental results verify the achievement of high efficiency.A closed-loop control scheme is implemented in the single-stage transmitter to supply multiple receivers simultaneously. With a controlled constant transmitter current, the system provides a smooth transition during dynamically load change. ZVS detection circuit is proposed to protect the transmitter from continuous hard switching operation. The control scheme is verified in the experiments.The multiple-reciever WPT system with the single-stage transmitter is investigated. The system operating range is discussed. The method of tracking optimum system efficiency is studied. The system control scheme and control procedure, targeting at providing a wide system operating range, robust operation and capability of tracking the optimized system efficiency, are proposed.     In this chapter, a survey of LED driver circuits is presented. The driver circuit is a crucial component in the LED light system. It provides the correct voltage and current values for the best brightness and long life. Furthermore, the driver circuits contribute to obtaining high efficiency and reliability light system. Several lighting applications need different driver topologies that meet the use requirement and the energy sources available. In actual applications, passive and active circuits are implemented to satisfy the LED driver electrical requirements and cost-effective demands. The LED driver circuits investigation evaluate the issues and the solutions in the LED lighting systems connected to a DC source such as a battery or AC line. The AC line connection requisites such as the power factor correction and the harmonic distortion are dealt with both the driver topology and control optimization. Also, the volume reduction need is examined in the circuitry choice.
