A computer scientist looks at game theory

I consider issues in distributed computation that should be of relevance to game theory. In particular, I focus on (a) representing knowledge and uncertainty, (b) dealing with failures, and (c) specification of mechanisms.Comment: To appear, Games and Economic Behavior. Addendum to "Experimental demonstration of a quantum protocol for Byzantine agreement and liar detection" arXiv:0710.0290

Gao et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 208901 (2008)] have described a possible intercept-resend attack for the quantum protocol for detectable Byzantine agreement in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 070504 (2008). Here we describe an extension of the protocol which defeats such attacks.Comment: REVTeX4, 2 page

A Finite Exact Representation of Register Automata Configurations

A register automaton is a finite automaton with finitely many registers ranging from an infinite alphabet. Since the valuations of registers are infinite, there are infinitely many configurations. We describe a technique to classify infinite register automata configurations into finitely many exact representative configurations. Using the finitary representation, we give an algorithm solving the reachability problem for register automata. We moreover define a computation tree logic for register automata and solve its model checking problem.Comment: In Proceedings INFINITY 2013, arXiv:1402.661

    Distributed operating systems

In the past five years, distributed operating systems research has gone through a consolidation phase. On a large number of design issues there is now considerable consensus between different research groups.\ud \ud In this paper, an overview of recent research in distributed systems is given. In turn, the paper discusses overall system structure, protection issues, file system designs, problems and solutions for fault tolerance and a mechanism that is rapidly becoming very important for efficient distributed systems design: hints.\ud \ud An attempt was made to provide sufficient references to interesting research projects for the reader to find material for more detailed study
