    Reliability of Dynamic Load Scheduling with Solar Forecast Scenarios

    This paper presents and evaluates the performance of an optimal scheduling algorithm that selects the on/off combinations and timing of a finite set of dynamic electric loads on the basis of short term predictions of the power delivery from a photovoltaic source. In the algorithm for optimal scheduling, each load is modeled with a dynamic power profile that may be different for on and off switching. Optimal scheduling is achieved by the evaluation of a user-specified criterion function with possible power constraints. The scheduling algorithm exploits the use of a moving finite time horizon and the resulting finite number of scheduling combinations to achieve real-time computation of the optimal timing and switching of loads. The moving time horizon in the proposed optimal scheduling algorithm provides an opportunity to use short term (time moving) predictions of solar power based on advection of clouds detected in sky images. Advection, persistence, and perfect forecast scenarios are used as input to the load scheduling algorithm to elucidate the effect of forecast errors on mis-scheduling. The advection forecast creates less events where the load demand is greater than the available solar energy, as compared to persistence. Increasing the decision horizon leads to increasing error and decreased efficiency of the system, measured as the amount of power consumed by the aggregate loads normalized by total solar power. For a standalone system with a real forecast, energy reserves are necessary to provide the excess energy required by mis-scheduled loads.     A Comparison of LPV Gain Scheduling and Control Contraction Metrics for Nonlinear Control

    Gain-scheduled control based on linear parameter-varying (LPV) models derived from local linearizations is a widespread nonlinear technique for tracking time-varying setpoints. Recently, a nonlinear control scheme based on Control Contraction Metrics (CCMs) has been developed to track arbitrary admissible trajectories. This paper presents a comparison study of these two approaches. We show that the CCM based approach is an extended gain-scheduled control scheme which achieves global reference-independent stability and performance through an exact control realization which integrates a series of local LPV controllers on a particular path between the current and reference states.Comment: IFAC LPVS 201

    An Efficient Uplink Multi-Connectivity Scheme for 5G mmWave Control Plane Applications

    The millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies offer the potential of orders of magnitude increases in capacity for next-generation cellular systems. However, links in mmWave networks are susceptible to blockage and may suffer from rapid variations in quality. Connectivity to multiple cells - at mmWave and/or traditional frequencies - is considered essential for robust communication. One of the challenges in supporting multi-connectivity in mmWaves is the requirement for the network to track the direction of each link in addition to its power and timing. To address this challenge, we implement a novel uplink measurement system that, with the joint help of a local coordinator operating in the legacy band, guarantees continuous monitoring of the channel propagation conditions and allows for the design of efficient control plane applications, including handover, beam tracking and initial access. We show that an uplink-based multi-connectivity approach enables less consuming, better performing, faster and more stable cell selection and scheduling decisions with respect to a traditional downlink-based standalone scheme. Moreover, we argue that the presented framework guarantees (i) efficient tracking of the user in the presence of the channel dynamics expected at mmWaves, and (ii) fast reaction to situations in which the primary propagation path is blocked or not available.Comment: Submitted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (TWC

    A method for interference mitigation in space communications scheduling

    Increases in the number of user spacecraft and data rates supported by NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) in the S and Ku bands could result in communications conflicts due to mutual interference. A method to mitigate interference while minimizing unnecessary scheduling restrictions on both TDRSS network and user resources, based on consideration of all relevant communications parameters, was developed. The steps of this method calculate required separation angles at TDRS and produce interference intervals, which can be used in the production of schedules free of unacceptable interference. The method can also be used as a basis for analysis, evaluation, and optimization of user schedules with respect to communications performance. Described here are the proposed method and its potential application to scheduling in space communications. Test cases relative to planned missions, including the Earth Observing System, the Space Station Manned Base, and the Space Shuttle are discussed
