Exploring heterogeneity of unreliable machines for p2p backup
P2P architecture is a viable option for enterprise backup. In contrast to
dedicated backup servers, nowadays a standard solution, making backups directly
on organization's workstations should be cheaper (as existing hardware is
used), more efficient (as there is no single bottleneck server) and more
reliable (as the machines are geographically dispersed).
We present the architecture of a p2p backup system that uses pairwise
replication contracts between a data owner and a replicator. In contrast to
standard p2p storage systems using directly a DHT, the contracts allow our
system to optimize replicas' placement depending on a specific optimization
strategy, and so to take advantage of the heterogeneity of the machines and the
network. Such optimization is particularly appealing in the context of backup:
replicas can be geographically dispersed, the load sent over the network can be
minimized, or the optimization goal can be to minimize the backup/restore time.
However, managing the contracts, keeping them consistent and adjusting them in
response to dynamically changing environment is challenging.
We built a scientific prototype and ran the experiments on 150 workstations
in the university's computer laboratories and, separately, on 50 PlanetLab
nodes. We found out that the main factor affecting the quality of the system is
the availability of the machines. Yet, our main conclusion is that it is
possible to build an efficient and reliable backup system on highly unreliable
machines (our computers had just 13% average availability)
Memory and information processing in neuromorphic systems
A striking difference between brain-inspired neuromorphic processors and
current von Neumann processors architectures is the way in which memory and
processing is organized. As Information and Communication Technologies continue
to address the need for increased computational power through the increase of
cores within a digital processor, neuromorphic engineers and scientists can
complement this need by building processor architectures where memory is
distributed with the processing. In this paper we present a survey of
brain-inspired processor architectures that support models of cortical networks
and deep neural networks. These architectures range from serial clocked
implementations of multi-neuron systems to massively parallel asynchronous ones
and from purely digital systems to mixed analog/digital systems which implement
more biological-like models of neurons and synapses together with a suite of
adaptation and learning mechanisms analogous to the ones found in biological
nervous systems. We describe the advantages of the different approaches being
pursued and present the challenges that need to be addressed for building
artificial neural processing systems that can display the richness of behaviors

Distral: Robust Multitask Reinforcement Learning
Most deep reinforcement learning algorithms are data inefficient in complex
and rich environments, limiting their applicability to many scenarios. One
direction for improving data efficiency is multitask learning with shared
neural network parameters, where efficiency may be improved through transfer
across related tasks. In practice, however, this is not usually observed,
because gradients from different tasks can interfere negatively, making
learning unstable and sometimes even less data efficient. Another issue is the
different reward schemes between tasks, which can easily lead to one task
dominating the learning of a shared model. We propose a new approach for joint
training of multiple tasks, which we refer to as Distral (Distill & transfer
learning). Instead of sharing parameters between the different workers, we
propose to share a "distilled" policy that captures common behaviour across
tasks. Each worker is trained to solve its own task while constrained to stay
close to the shared policy, while the shared policy is trained by distillation
to be the centroid of all task policies. Both aspects of the learning process
are derived by optimizing a joint objective function. We show that our approach
supports efficient transfer on complex 3D environments, outperforming several

A sub-mW IoT-endnode for always-on visual monitoring and smart triggering
This work presents a fully-programmable Internet of Things (IoT) visual
sensing node that targets sub-mW power consumption in always-on monitoring
scenarios. The system features a spatial-contrast binary
pixel imager with focal-plane processing. The sensor, when working at its
lowest power mode ( at 10 fps), provides as output the number of
changed pixels. Based on this information, a dedicated camera interface,
implemented on a low-power FPGA, wakes up an ultra-low-power parallel
processing unit to extract context-aware visual information. We evaluate the
smart sensor on three always-on visual triggering application scenarios.
Triggering accuracy comparable to RGB image sensors is achieved at nominal
lighting conditions, while consuming an average power between and
, depending on context activity. The digital sub-system is extremely
flexible, thanks to a fully-programmable digital signal processing engine, but
still achieves 19x lower power consumption compared to MCU-based cameras with

Basic Enhancement Strategies When Using Bayesian Optimization for Hyperparameter Tuning of Deep Neural Networks
Compared to the traditional machine learning models, deep neural networks (DNN) are known to be highly sensitive to the choice of hyperparameters. While the required time and effort for manual tuning has been rapidly decreasing for the well developed and commonly used DNN architectures, undoubtedly DNN hyperparameter optimization will continue to be a major burden whenever a new DNN architecture needs to be designed, a new task needs to be solved, a new dataset needs to be addressed, or an existing DNN needs to be improved further. For hyperparameter optimization of general machine learning problems, numerous automated solutions have been developed where some of the most popular solutions are based on Bayesian Optimization (BO). In this work, we analyze four fundamental strategies for enhancing BO when it is used for DNN hyperparameter optimization. Specifically, diversification, early termination, parallelization, and cost function transformation are investigated. Based on the analysis, we provide a simple yet robust algorithm for DNN hyperparameter optimization - DEEP-BO (Diversified, Early-termination-Enabled, and Parallel Bayesian Optimization). When evaluated over six DNN benchmarks, DEEP-BO mostly outperformed well-known solutions including GP-Hedge, BOHB, and the speed-up variants that use Median Stopping Rule or Learning Curve Extrapolation. In fact, DEEP-BO consistently provided the top, or at least close to the top, performance over all the benchmark types that we have tested. how they have been applied to play different types of video games such as
first-person shooters, arcade games, and real-time strategy games. We analyze
