Face Identification and Clustering
In this thesis, we study two problems based on clustering algorithms. In the
first problem, we study the role of visual attributes using an agglomerative
clustering algorithm to whittle down the search area where the number of
classes is high to improve the performance of clustering. We observe that as we
add more attributes, the clustering performance increases overall. In the
second problem, we study the role of clustering in aggregating templates in a
1:N open set protocol using multi-shot video as a probe. We observe that by
increasing the number of clusters, the performance increases with respect to
the baseline and reaches a peak, after which increasing the number of clusters
causes the performance to degrade. Experiments are conducted using recently
introduced unconstrained IARPA Janus IJB-A, CS2, and CS3 face recognition
datasets
A Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of Deformable Face Tracking "In-the-Wild"
Recently, technologies such as face detection, facial landmark localisation
and face recognition and verification have matured enough to provide effective
and efficient solutions for imagery captured under arbitrary conditions
(referred to as "in-the-wild"). This is partially attributed to the fact that
comprehensive "in-the-wild" benchmarks have been developed for face detection,
landmark localisation and recognition/verification. A very important technology
that has not been thoroughly evaluated yet is deformable face tracking
"in-the-wild". Until now, the performance has mainly been assessed
qualitatively by visually assessing the result of a deformable face tracking
technology on short videos. In this paper, we perform the first, to the best of
our knowledge, thorough evaluation of state-of-the-art deformable face tracking
pipelines using the recently introduced 300VW benchmark. We evaluate many
different architectures focusing mainly on the task of on-line deformable face
tracking. In particular, we compare the following general strategies: (a)
generic face detection plus generic facial landmark localisation, (b) generic
model free tracking plus generic facial landmark localisation, as well as (c)
hybrid approaches using state-of-the-art face detection, model free tracking
and facial landmark localisation technologies. Our evaluation reveals future

PD2T: Person-specific Detection, Deformable Tracking
Face detection/alignment has reached a satisfactory state in static images captured under arbitrary conditions. Such methods typically perform (joint) fitting independently for each frame and are used in commercial applications; however in the majority of the real-world scenarios the dynamic scenes are of interest. Hence, we argue that generic fitting per frame is suboptimal (it discards the informative correlation of sequential frames) and propose to learn person-specific statistics from the video to improve the generic results. To that end, we introduce a meticulously studied pipeline, which we name PD\textsuperscript{2}T, that performs person-specific detection and landmark localisation. We carry out extensive experimentation with a diverse set of i) generic fitting results, ii) different objects (human faces, animal faces) that illustrate the powerful properties of our proposed pipeline and experimentally verify that PD\textsuperscript{2}T outperforms all the compared methods
MobiFace: A Novel Dataset for Mobile Face Tracking in the Wild
Face tracking serves as the crucial initial step in mobile applications
trying to analyse target faces over time in mobile settings. However, this
problem has received little attention, mainly due to the scarcity of dedicated
face tracking benchmarks. In this work, we introduce MobiFace, the first
dataset for single face tracking in mobile situations. It consists of 80
unedited live-streaming mobile videos captured by 70 different smartphone users
in fully unconstrained environments. Over bounding boxes are manually
labelled. The videos are carefully selected to cover typical smartphone usage.
The videos are also annotated with 14 attributes, including 6 newly proposed
attributes and 8 commonly seen in object tracking. 36 state-of-the-art
trackers, including facial landmark trackers, generic object trackers and
trackers that we have fine-tuned or improved, are evaluated. The results
suggest that mobile face tracking cannot be solved through existing approaches.
In addition, we show that fine-tuning on the MobiFace training data
significantly boosts the performance of deep learning-based trackers,
suggesting that MobiFace captures the unique characteristics of mobile face
tracking. Our goal is to offer the community a diverse dataset to enable the
design and evaluation of mobile face trackers. The dataset, annotations and the

State of the Art in Face Recognition
Notwithstanding the tremendous effort to solve the face recognition problem, it is not possible yet to design a face recognition system with a potential close to human performance. New computer vision and pattern recognition approaches need to be investigated. Even new knowledge and perspectives from different fields like, psychology and neuroscience must be incorporated into the current field of face recognition to design a robust face recognition system. Indeed, many more efforts are required to end up with a human like face recognition system. Online learning and detection of faces with low human supervision
The final publication is available at link.springer.comWe present an efficient,online,and interactive approach for computing a classifier, called Wild Lady Ferns (WiLFs), for face learning and detection using small human supervision. More precisely, on the one hand, WiLFs combine online boosting and extremely randomized trees (Random Ferns) to compute progressively an efficient and discriminative classifier. On the other hand, WiLFs use an interactive human-machine approach that combines two complementary learning strategies to reduce considerably the degree of human supervision during learning. While the first strategy corresponds to query-by-boosting active learning, that requests human assistance over difficult samples in function of the classifier confidence, the second strategy refers to a memory-based learning which uses ¿ Exemplar-based Nearest Neighbors (¿ENN) to assist automatically the classifier. A pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is used to perform ¿ENN with high-level feature descriptors. The proposed approach is therefore fast (WilFs run in 1 FPS using a code not fully optimized), accurate (we obtain detection rates over 82% in complex datasets), and labor-saving (human assistance percentages of less than 20%).
As a byproduct, we demonstrate that WiLFs also perform semi-automatic annotation during learning, as while the classifier is being computed, WiLFs are discovering faces instances in input images which are used subsequently for training online the classifier. The advantages of our approach are demonstrated in synthetic and publicly available databases, showing comparable detection rates as offline approaches that require larger amounts of handmade training data.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
