Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure
A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium
Complexity Science in Human Change
This reprint encompasses fourteen contributions that offer avenues towards a better understanding of complex systems in human behavior. The phenomena studied here are generally pattern formation processes that originate in social interaction and psychotherapy. Several accounts are also given of the coordination in body movements and in physiological, neuronal and linguistic processes. A common denominator of such pattern formation is that complexity and entropy of the respective systems become reduced spontaneously, which is the hallmark of self-organization. The various methodological approaches of how to model such processes are presented in some detail. Results from the various methods are systematically compared and discussed. Among these approaches are algorithms for the quantification of synchrony by cross-correlational statistics, surrogate control procedures, recurrence mapping and network models.This volume offers an informative and sophisticated resource for scholars of human change, and as well for students at advanced levels, from graduate to post-doctoral. The automatic processing of multiword expressions in Irish
It is well-documented that Multiword Expressions (MWEs) pose a unique challenge
to a variety of NLP tasks such as machine translation, parsing, information retrieval,
and more. For low-resource languages such as Irish, these challenges can be exacerbated by the scarcity of data, and a lack of research in this topic. In order to
improve handling of MWEs in various NLP tasks for Irish, this thesis will address
both the lack of resources specifically targeting MWEs in Irish, and examine how
these resources can be applied to said NLP tasks.
We report on the creation and analysis of a number of lexical resources as part
of this PhD research. Ilfhocail, a lexicon of Irish MWEs, is created through extract-
ing MWEs from other lexical resources such as dictionaries. A corpus annotated
with verbal MWEs in Irish is created for the inclusion of Irish in the PARSEME
Shared Task 1.2. Additionally, MWEs were tagged in a bilingual EN-GA corpus
for inclusion in experiments in machine translation. For the purposes of annotation, a categorisation scheme for nine categories of MWEs in Irish is created, based
on combining linguistic analysis on these types of constructions and cross-lingual
frameworks for defining MWEs.
A case study in applying MWEs to NLP tasks is undertaken, with the exploration of incorporating MWE information while training Neural Machine Translation
systems. Finally, the topic of automatic identification of Irish MWEs is explored,
documenting the training of a system capable of automatically identifying Irish
MWEs from a variety of categories, and the challenges associated with developing
such a system.
This research contributes towards a greater understanding of Irish MWEs and
their applications in NLP, and provides a foundation for future work in exploring
other methods for the automatic discovery and identification of Irish MWEs, and
further developing the MWE resources described above

The galactic acceleration scale is imprinted on globular cluster systems of early-type galaxies of most masses and on red and blue globular cluster subpopulations
Context. Globular clusters carry information about the formation histories
and gravitational fields of their host galaxies. B\'ilek et al. (2019, BSR19
hereafter) reported that the radial profiles of volume number density of GCs in
GC systems (GCS) follow broken power laws, while the breaks occur approximately
at the radii. These are the radii at which the gravitational fields of
the galaxies equal the galactic acceleration scale ms known from the radial acceleration relation or the MOND
theory of modified dynamics.
Aims. Our main goals here are to explore whether the results of BSR19 hold
true for galaxies of a wider mass range and for the red and blue GCs
sub-populations.
Methods. We exploited catalogs of photometric GC candidates in the Fornax
galaxy cluster based on ground and space observations and a new catalog of
spectroscopic GCs of NGC 1399, the central galaxy of the cluster. For every
galaxy, we obtained the parameters of the broken power law density by fitting
the on-sky distribution of the GC candidates, while allowing for a constant
density of contaminants. The logarithmic stellar masses of our galaxy sample
span 8.0-11.4 .
Results. All investigated GCSs with a sufficient number of members show
broken power-law density profiles. This holds true for the total GC population
and the blue and red subpopulations. The inner and outer slopes and the break
radii agree well for the different GC populations. The break radii agree with
the radii typically within a factor of two for all GC color
subpopulations. The outer slopes correlate better with the radii than
with the galactic stellar masses. The break radii of NGC 1399 vary in azimuth,
such that they are greater toward and against the neighboring galaxy NGC 1404.Comment: 39 pages, ~15 pages main text, 33 figures, 12 tables. Accepted for
