Code designs for MIMO broadcast channels
Recent information-theoretic results show the optimality of dirty-paper coding (DPC) in achieving the full capacity region of the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC). This paper presents a DPC based code design for BCs. We consider the case in which there is an individual rate/signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for each user. For a fixed transmitter power, we choose the linear transmit precoding matrix such that the SINRs at users are uniformly maximized, thus ensuring the best bit-error rate performance. We start with Cover's simplest two-user Gaussian BC and present a coding scheme that operates 1.44 dB from the boundary of the capacity region at the rate of one bit per real sample (b/s) for each user. We then extend the coding strategy to a two-user MIMO Gaussian BC with two transmit antennas at the base-station and develop the first limit-approaching code design using nested turbo codes for DPC. At the rate of 1 b/s for each user, our design operates 1.48 dB from the capacity region boundary. We also consider the performance of our scheme over a slow fading BC. For two transmit antennas, simulation results indicate a performance loss of only 1.4 dB, 1.64 dB and 1.99 dB from the theoretical limit in terms of the total transmission power for the two, three and four user case, respectively
Power and Bandwidth Efficient Coded Modulation for Linear Gaussian Channels
A scheme for power- and bandwidth-efficient communication on the linear Gaussian channel is proposed. A scenario is assumed in which the channel is stationary in time and the channel characteristics are known at the transmitter. Using interleaving, the linear Gaussian channel with its intersymbol interference is decomposed into a set of memoryless subchannels. Each subchannel is further decomposed into parallel binary memoryless channels, to enable the use of binary codes. Code bits from these parallel binary channels are mapped to higher-order near-Gaussian distributed constellation symbols. At the receiver, the code bits are detected and decoded in a multistage fashion. The scheme is demonstrated on a simple instance of the linear Gaussian channel. Simulations show that the scheme achieves reliable communication at 1.2 dB away from the Shannon capacity using a moderate number of subchannels
Bilayer Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Decode-and-Forward in Relay Channels
This paper describes an efficient implementation of binning for the relay
channel using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We devise bilayer LDPC
codes to approach the theoretically promised rate of the decode-and-forward
relaying strategy by incorporating relay-generated information bits in
specially designed bilayer graphical code structures. While conventional LDPC
codes are sensitively tuned to operate efficiently at a certain channel
parameter, the proposed bilayer LDPC codes are capable of working at two
different channel parameters and two different rates: that at the relay and at
the destination. To analyze the performance of bilayer LDPC codes, bilayer
density evolution is devised as an extension of the standard density evolution
algorithm. Based on bilayer density evolution, a design methodology is
developed for the bilayer codes in which the degree distribution is iteratively
improved using linear programming. Further, in order to approach the
theoretical decode-and-forward rate for a wide range of channel parameters,
this paper proposes two different forms bilayer codes, the bilayer-expurgated
and bilayer-lengthened codes. It is demonstrated that a properly designed
bilayer LDPC code can achieve an asymptotic infinite-length threshold within
0.24 dB gap to the Shannon limits of two different channels simultaneously for
a wide range of channel parameters. By practical code construction,
finite-length bilayer codes are shown to be able to approach within a 0.6 dB
gap to the theoretical decode-and-forward rate of the relay channel at a block
length of and a bit-error probability (BER) of . Finally, it is
demonstrated that a generalized version of the proposed bilayer code
construction is applicable to relay networks with multiple relays.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. Info. Theor
Unified Capacity Limit of Non-coherent Wideband Fading Channels
In non-coherent wideband fading channels where energy rather than spectrum is
the limiting resource, peaky and non-peaky signaling schemes have long been
considered species apart, as the first approaches asymptotically the capacity
of a wideband AWGN channel with the same average SNR, whereas the second
reaches a peak rate at some finite critical bandwidth and then falls to zero as
bandwidth grows to infinity. In this paper it is shown that this distinction is
in fact an artifact of the limited attention paid in the past to the product
between the bandwidth and the fraction of time it is in use. This fundamental
quantity, called bandwidth occupancy, measures average bandwidth usage over
time. For all signaling schemes with the same bandwidth occupancy, achievable
rates approach to the wideband AWGN capacity within the same gap as the
bandwidth occupancy approaches its critical value, and decrease to zero as the
occupancy goes to infinity. This unified analysis produces quantitative
closed-form expressions for the ideal bandwidth occupancy, recovers the
existing capacity results for (non-)peaky signaling schemes, and unveils a
trade-off between the accuracy of approximating capacity with a generalized
Taylor polynomial and the accuracy with which the optimal bandwidth occupancy
can be bounded.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Wireless

LDPC Code Design for the BPSK-constrained Gaussian Wiretap Channel
A coding scheme based on irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is
proposed to send secret messages from a source over the Gaussian wiretap
channel to a destination in the presence of a wiretapper, with the restriction
that the source can send only binary phase-shift keyed (BPSK) symbols. The
secrecy performance of the proposed coding scheme is measured by the secret
message rate through the wiretap channel as well as the equivocation rate about
the message at the wiretapper. A code search procedure is suggested to obtain
irregular LDPC codes that achieve good secrecy performance in such context.Comment: submitted to IEEE GLOBECOM 2011 - Communication Theory Symposiu
