A portable multimedia information device in a wireless optical data link

    Get PDF
This paper describes the design and implementation of a portable multimedia information device that receives information from a free space optical data link established using visible light LEDs. The visible light, which is transmitted from a transmitter made up of LEDs, is modulated and encoded with data and information. The portable receiver is consisted of a demodulation circuit and an interface to a handheld PC. Software applications have also been developed on this hardware platform so that the mobile PC device can receive data, audio and graphics through the visible light from the transmitter, which is located at some distance from the device. With the high frequency switching of the LEDs, the transmitter appears to be constantly illuminated.published_or_final_versio

The Design of a System Architecture for Mobile Multimedia Computers

    Get PDF
This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks. A reconfigurable internal communication network switch exploits locality of reference and eliminates wasteful data copies

Full duplex 60 GHz millimeter wave transmission over multi-mode fiber

    Get PDF
Copyright @ 2010 IEEENew wireless subscribers are signing up at an increasing demand of more capacity for ultra-high data rate transfers at speeds more than 1 Gbps, while the radio spectrum is limited. Millimeter wave communication system offers a unique way to resolve these problems. In this paper, the performance of a full duplex transportation system is reported for 1.5 Km of multi-mode fiber length for a sample 10 Gbit/s pseudo random sequence data, with quadrature amplitude modulation mapping and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing modulation with 60 GHz RF and coherent 1550 nm optical carrier. The analysis and simulation results show that the system's quality of service depends on nonlinearity of electro optical modulator, dispersion and signal attenuation impairment of the multi-mode fiber cable

Systems And Methods For Intelligent Policy Enforcement In Access Networks

    Get PDF
Systems and methods of intelligent policy enforcement in access networks are disclosed. One such method is implemented in a network device and comprises updating a traffic history with information associated with an incoming packet arriving from or destined to a subscriber link. The method also comprises calculating a drop probability for a next traffic instant and predicting a traffic rate for each of a plurality of flows on the subscriber link. The method also comprises determining whether the incoming packet conforms to a traffic policy associated with the incoming packet. The method also comprises determining whether surplus bandwidth is available on the subscriber link. The method also comprises forwarding the packet responsive to the determination that the incoming packet does not conform and that surplus bandwidth is available.Georgia Tech Research Corporatio
