    Comparative study of different approaches to solve batch process scheduling and optimisation problems

    Effective approaches are important to batch process scheduling problems, especially those with complex constraints. However, most research focus on improving optimisation techniques, and those concentrate on comparing their difference are inadequate. This study develops an optimisation model of batch process scheduling problems with complex constraints and investigates the performance of different optimisation techniques, such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Constraint Programming (CP). It finds that CP has a better capacity to handle batch process problems with complex constraints but it costs longer time

    A Predictive-reactive Approach for JSP with Uncertain Processing Times

    The paper is supported by the Asia-Link project funded by the European Commission (CN/ASIA-LINK/024 (109093)), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (50705076, 50705077), and the National Hi-Tech R&D Program of China (2007AA04Z187)JSP with discretely controllable processing times (JSP-DCPT) that are perturbed in a turbulent environment is formulated, based on which, a time-cost tradeoff based predictive-reactive scheduling approach is proposed for solving the problem. In the predictive scheduling process, on the basis of a proposed three-step decomposition approach for solving JSP-DCPT, a solution initialization algorithm is presented by incorporating a hybrid algorithm of tabu search and simulated annealing and a fast elitist non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm; in the reactive scheduling process, Pareto-optimal schedules are generated, among which every schedule that is not dominated by any initial schedule can be selected as the responding schedule so as to maintain optimality of the objective that is to minimize both the makespan and the cost. Experimental simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Dynamic scheduling in a multi-product manufacturing system

    To remain competitive in global marketplace, manufacturing companies need to improve their operational practices. One of the methods to increase competitiveness in manufacturing is by implementing proper scheduling system. This is important to enable job orders to be completed on time, minimize waiting time and maximize utilization of equipment and machineries. The dynamics of real manufacturing system are very complex in nature. Schedules developed based on deterministic algorithms are unable to effectively deal with uncertainties in demand and capacity. Significant differences can be found between planned schedules and actual schedule implementation. This study attempted to develop a scheduling system that is able to react quickly and reliably for accommodating changes in product demand and manufacturing capacity. A case study, 6 by 6 job shop scheduling problem was adapted with uncertainty elements added to the data sets. A simulation model was designed and implemented using ARENA simulation package to generate various job shop scheduling scenarios. Their performances were evaluated using scheduling rules, namely, first-in-first-out (FIFO), earliest due date (EDD), and shortest processing time (SPT). An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed and trained using various scheduling scenarios generated by ARENA simulation. The experimental results suggest that the ANN scheduling model can provided moderately reliable prediction results for limited scenarios when predicting the number completed jobs, maximum flowtime, average machine utilization, and average length of queue. This study has provided better understanding on the effects of changes in demand and capacity on the job shop schedules. Areas for further study includes: (i) Fine tune the proposed ANN scheduling model (ii) Consider more variety of job shop environment (iii) Incorporate an expert system for interpretation of results. The theoretical framework proposed in this study can be used as a basis for further investigation

    Spatial-temporal data modelling and processing for personalised decision support

    The purpose of this research is to undertake the modelling of dynamic data without losing any of the temporal relationships, and to be able to predict likelihood of outcome as far in advance of actual occurrence as possible. To this end a novel computational architecture for personalised ( individualised) modelling of spatio-temporal data based on spiking neural network methods (PMeSNNr), with a three dimensional visualisation of relationships between variables is proposed. In brief, the architecture is able to transfer spatio-temporal data patterns from a multidimensional input stream into internal patterns in the spiking neural network reservoir. These patterns are then analysed to produce a personalised model for either classification or prediction dependent on the specific needs of the situation. The architecture described above was constructed using MatLab© in several individual modules linked together to form NeuCube (M1). This methodology has been applied to two real world case studies. Firstly, it has been applied to data for the prediction of stroke occurrences on an individual basis. Secondly, it has been applied to ecological data on aphid pest abundance prediction. Two main objectives for this research when judging outcomes of the modelling are accurate prediction and to have this at the earliest possible time point. The implications of these findings are not insignificant in terms of health care management and environmental control. As the case studies utilised here represent vastly different application fields, it reveals more of the potential and usefulness of NeuCube (M1) for modelling data in an integrated manner. This in turn can identify previously unknown (or less understood) interactions thus both increasing the level of reliance that can be placed on the model created, and enhancing our human understanding of the complexities of the world around us without the need for over simplification.     The Integration of Process Planning and Shop Floor Scheduling in Small Batch Part Manufacturing

    In this paper we explore possibilities to cut manufacturing leadtimes and to improve delivery performance in a small batch part manufacturing shop by integrating process planning and shop floor scheduling. Using a set of initial process plans (one for each order in the shop), we exploit a resource decomposition procedure to determine schedules to determine schedules which minimize the maximum lateness, given these process plans. If the resulting schedule is still unsatisfactory, a critical path analysis is performed to select jobs as candidates for alternative process plans. In this way, an excellent due date performance can be achieved, with a minimum of process planning and scheduling effort

    Capacity Planning and Leadtime management

    In this paper we discuss a framework for capacity planning and lead time management in manufacturing companies, with an emphasis on the machine shop. First we show how queueing models can be used to find approximations of the mean and the variance of manufacturing shop lead times. These quantities often serve as a basis to set a fixed planned lead time in an MRP-controlled environment. A major drawback of a fixed planned lead time is the ignorance of the correlation between actual work loads and the lead times that can be realized under a limited capacity flexibility. To overcome this problem, we develop a method that determines the earliest possible completion time of any arriving job, without sacrificing the delivery performance of any other job in the shop. This earliest completion time is then taken to be the delivery date and thereby determines a workload-dependent planned lead time. We compare this capacity planning procedure with a fixed planned lead time approach (as in MRP), with a procedure in which lead times are estimated based on the amount of work in the shop, and with a workload-oriented release procedure. Numerical experiments so far show an excellent performance of the capacity planning procedure
