Efficient spiking neural network model of pattern motion selectivity in visual cortex
Simulating large-scale models of biological motion perception is challenging, due to the required memory to store the network structure and the computational power needed to quickly solve the neuronal dynamics. A low-cost yet high-performance approach to simulating large-scale neural network models in real-time is to leverage the parallel processing capability of graphics processing units (GPUs). Based on this approach, we present a two-stage model of visual area MT that we believe to be the first large-scale spiking network to demonstrate pattern direction selectivity. In this model, component-direction- selective (CDS) cells in MT linearly combine inputs from V1 cells that have spatiotemporal receptive fields according to the motion energy model of Simoncelli and Heeger. Pattern-direction-selective (PDS) cells in MT are constructed by pooling over MT CDS cells with a wide range of preferred directions. Responses of our model neurons are comparable to electrophysiological results for grating and plaid stimuli as well as speed tuning. The behavioral response of the network in a motion discrimination task is in agreement with psychophysical data. Moreover, our implementation outperforms a previous implementation of the motion energy model by orders of magnitude in terms of computational speed and memory usage. The full network, which comprises 153,216 neurons and approximately 40 million synapses, processes 20 frames per second of a 40∈×∈40 input video in real-time using a single off-the-shelf GPU. To promote the use of this algorithm among neuroscientists and computer vision researchers, the source code for the simulator, the network, and analysis scripts are publicly available. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York
Four-dimensional tomographic reconstruction by time domain decomposition
Since the beginnings of tomography, the requirement that the sample does not
change during the acquisition of one tomographic rotation is unchanged. We
derived and successfully implemented a tomographic reconstruction method which
relaxes this decades-old requirement of static samples. In the presented
method, dynamic tomographic data sets are decomposed in the temporal domain
using basis functions and deploying an L1 regularization technique where the
penalty factor is taken for spatial and temporal derivatives. We implemented
the iterative algorithm for solving the regularization problem on modern GPU
systems to demonstrate its practical use
Parallel Multi-Hypothesis Algorithm for Criticality Estimation in Traffic and Collision Avoidance
Due to the current developments towards autonomous driving and vehicle active
safety, there is an increasing necessity for algorithms that are able to
perform complex criticality predictions in real-time. Being able to process
multi-object traffic scenarios aids the implementation of a variety of
automotive applications such as driver assistance systems for collision
prevention and mitigation as well as fall-back systems for autonomous vehicles.
We present a fully model-based algorithm with a parallelizable architecture.
The proposed algorithm can evaluate the criticality of complex, multi-modal
(vehicles and pedestrians) traffic scenarios by simulating millions of
trajectory combinations and detecting collisions between objects. The algorithm
is able to estimate upcoming criticality at very early stages, demonstrating
its potential for vehicle safety-systems and autonomous driving applications.
An implementation on an embedded system in a test vehicle proves in a
prototypical manner the compatibility of the algorithm with the hardware
possibilities of modern cars. For a complex traffic scenario with 11 dynamic
objects, more than 86 million pose combinations are evaluated in 21 ms on the
GPU of a Drive PX~2
Asymptotically near-optimal RRT for fast, high-quality, motion planning
We present Lower Bound Tree-RRT (LBT-RRT), a single-query sampling-based
algorithm that is asymptotically near-optimal. Namely, the solution extracted
from LBT-RRT converges to a solution that is within an approximation factor of
1+epsilon of the optimal solution. Our algorithm allows for a continuous
interpolation between the fast RRT algorithm and the asymptotically optimal
RRT* and RRG algorithms. When the approximation factor is 1 (i.e., no
approximation is allowed), LBT-RRT behaves like RRG. When the approximation
factor is unbounded, LBT-RRT behaves like RRT. In between, LBT-RRT is shown to
produce paths that have higher quality than RRT would produce and run faster
than RRT* would run. This is done by maintaining a tree which is a sub-graph of
the RRG roadmap and a second, auxiliary graph, which we call the lower-bound
graph. The combination of the two roadmaps, which is faster to maintain than
the roadmap maintained by RRT*, efficiently guarantees asymptotic
near-optimality. We suggest to use LBT-RRT for high-quality, anytime motion
planning. We demonstrate the performance of the algorithm for scenarios ranging
from 3 to 12 degrees of freedom and show that even for small approximation
factors, the algorithm produces high-quality solutions (comparable to RRG and
RRT*) with little running-time overhead when compared to RRT
Collaborative Computation in Self-Organizing Particle Systems
Many forms of programmable matter have been proposed for various tasks. We
use an abstract model of self-organizing particle systems for programmable
matter which could be used for a variety of applications, including smart paint
and coating materials for engineering or programmable cells for medical uses.
Previous research using this model has focused on shape formation and other
spatial configuration problems (e.g., coating and compression). In this work we
study foundational computational tasks that exceed the capabilities of the
individual constant size memory of a particle, such as implementing a counter
and matrix-vector multiplication. These tasks represent new ways to use these
self-organizing systems, which, in conjunction with previous shape and
configuration work, make the systems useful for a wider variety of tasks. They
can also leverage the distributed and dynamic nature of the self-organizing
system to be more efficient and adaptable than on traditional linear computing
hardware. Finally, we demonstrate applications of similar types of computations
with self-organizing systems to image processing, with implementations of image
color transformation and edge detection algorithms
