    Monitoring elderly behavior via indoor position-based stigmergy

    In this paper we present a novel approach for monitoring elderly people living alone and independently in their own homes. The proposed system is able to detect behavioral deviations of the routine indoor activities on the basis of a generic indoor localization system and a swarm intelligence method. For this reason, an in-depth study on the error modeling of state-of-the-art indoor localization systems is presented in order to test the proposed system under different conditions in terms of localization error. More specifically, spatiotemporal tracks provided by the indoor localization system are augmented, via marker-based stigmergy, in order to enable their self-organization. This allows a marking structure appearing and staying spontaneously at runtime, when some local dynamism occurs. At a second level of processing, similarity evaluation is performed between stigmergic marks over different time periods in order to assess deviations. The purpose of this approach is to overcome an explicit modeling of user's activities and behaviors that is very inefficient to be managed, as it works only if the user does not stray too far from the conditions under which these explicit representations were formulated. The effectiveness of the proposed system has been experimented on real-world scenarios. The paper includes the problem statement and its characterization in the literature, as well as the proposed solving approach and experimental settings

    Trajectory Based Activity Discovery

    International audienceThis paper proposes a framework to discover activities in an unsupervised manner, and add semantics with minimal supervision. The framework uses basic trajectory information as input and goes up to video interpretation. The work reduces the gap between low-level information and semantic interpretation, building an intermediate layer composed of Primitive Events. The proposed representation for primitive events aims at capturing small meaningful motions over the scene with the advantage of being learnt in an unsupervised manner. We propose the discovery of an activity using these Primitive Events as the main descriptors. The activity discovery is done using only real tracking data. Semantics are added to the discovered activities and the recognition of activities (e.g., “Cooking”, “Eating”) can be automatically done with new datasets. Finally we validate the descriptors by discovering and recognizing activities in a home care application dataset

    Hierarchical Hidden Markov Model in Detecting Activities of Daily Living in Wearable Videos for Studies of Dementia

    International audienceThis paper presents a method for indexing activities of daily living in videos obtained from wearable cameras. In the context of dementia diagnosis by doctors, the videos are recorded at patients' houses and later visualized by the medical practitioners. The videos may last up to two hours, therefore a tool for an efficient navigation in terms of activities of interest is crucial for the doctors. The specific recording mode provides video data which are really difficult, being a single sequence shot where strong motion and sharp lighting changes often appear. Our work introduces an automatic motion based segmentation of the video and a video structuring approach in terms of activities by a hierarchical two-level Hidden Markov Model. We define our description space over motion and visual characteristics of video and audio channels. Experiments on real data obtained from the recording at home of several patients show the difficulty of the task and the promising results of our approach

    Discovering activity patterns in office environment using a network of low-resolution visual sensors

    Understanding activity patterns in office environments is important in order to increase workers’ comfort and productivity. This paper proposes an automated system for discovering activity patterns of multiple persons in a work environment using a network of cheap low-resolution visual sensors (900 pixels). Firstly, the users’ locations are obtained from a robust people tracker based on recursive maximum likelihood principles. Secondly, based on the users’ mobility tracks, the high density positions are found using a bivariate kernel density estimation. Then, the hotspots are detected using a confidence region estimation. Thirdly, we analyze the individual’s tracks to find the starting and ending hotspots. The starting and ending hotspots form an observation sequence, where the user’s presence and absence are detected using three powerful Probabilistic Graphical Models (PGMs). We describe two approaches to identify the user’s status: a single model approach and a two-model mining approach. We evaluate both approaches on video sequences captured in a real work environment, where the persons’ daily routines are recorded over 5 months. We show how the second approach achieves a better performance than the first approach. Routines dominating the entire group’s activities are identified with a methodology based on the Latent Dirichlet Allocation topic model. We also detect routines which are characteristic of persons. More specifically, we perform various analysis to determine regions with high variations, which may correspond to specific events

    Human activity monitoring by local and global finite state machines

    There are a number of solutions to automate the monotonous task of looking at a monitor to find suspicious behaviors in video surveillance scenarios. Detecting strange objects and intruders, or tracking people and objects, is essential for surveillance and safety in crowded environments. The present work deals with the idea of jointly modeling simple and complex behaviors to report local and global human activities in natural scenes. Modeling human activities with state machines is still common in our days and is the approach offered in this paper. We incorporate knowledge about the problem domain into an expected structure of the activity model. Motion-based image features are linked explicitly to a symbolic notion of hierarchical activity through several layers of more abstract activity descriptions. Atomic actions are detected at a low level and fed to hand-crafted grammars to detect activity patterns of interest. Also, we work with shape and trajectory to indicate the events related to moving objects. In order to validate our proposal we have performed several tests with some CAVIAR test cases
