spanning from reduced latency and real-time analytics to the pivotal aspects of
information security, scalability, and cost-efficiency, underscore the
indispensability of edge AI in modern IoE frameworks. As the narrative
progresses, readers are acquainted with pragmatic applications and techniques,
highlighting on-device computation, secure private inference methods, and the
avant-garde paradigms of AI training on the edge. A critical analysis follows,
offering a deep dive into the present challenges including security concerns,
computational hurdles, and standardization issues. However, as the horizon of
technology ever expands, the review culminates in a forward-looking
perspective, envisaging the future symbiosis of 5G networks, federated edge AI,
deep reinforcement learning, and more, painting a vibrant panorama of what the
future beholds. For anyone vested in the domains of IoE and AI, this review
offers both a foundation and a visionary lens, bridging the present realities
with future possibilities
DP-HyPO: An Adaptive Private Hyperparameter Optimization Framework
Hyperparameter optimization, also known as hyperparameter tuning, is a widely
recognized technique for improving model performance. Regrettably, when
training private ML models, many practitioners often overlook the privacy risks
associated with hyperparameter optimization, which could potentially expose
sensitive information about the underlying dataset. Currently, the sole
existing approach to allow privacy-preserving hyperparameter optimization is to
uniformly and randomly select hyperparameters for a number of runs,
subsequently reporting the best-performing hyperparameter. In contrast, in
non-private settings, practitioners commonly utilize "adaptive" hyperparameter
optimization methods such as Gaussian process-based optimization, which select
the next candidate based on information gathered from previous outputs. This
substantial contrast between private and non-private hyperparameter
optimization underscores a critical concern. In our paper, we introduce
DP-HyPO, a pioneering framework for "adaptive" private hyperparameter
optimization, aiming to bridge the gap between private and non-private
hyperparameter optimization. To accomplish this, we provide a comprehensive
differential privacy analysis of our framework. Furthermore, we empirically
demonstrate the effectiveness of DP-HyPO on a diverse set of real-world and
synthetic datasets
Crossing Roads of Federated Learning and Smart Grids: Overview, Challenges, and Perspectives
Consumer's privacy is a main concern in Smart Grids (SGs) due to the
sensitivity of energy data, particularly when used to train machine learning
models for different services. These data-driven models often require huge
amounts of data to achieve acceptable performance leading in most cases to
risks of privacy leakage. By pushing the training to the edge, Federated
Learning (FL) offers a good compromise between privacy preservation and the
predictive performance of these models. The current paper presents an overview
of FL applications in SGs while discussing their advantages and drawbacks,
mainly in load forecasting, electric vehicles, fault diagnoses, load
disaggregation and renewable energies. In addition, an analysis of main design
trends and possible taxonomies is provided considering data partitioning, the
communication topology, and security mechanisms. Towards the end, an overview
of main challenges facing this technology and potential future directions is
presented
Simulated Annealing
The book contains 15 chapters presenting recent contributions of top researchers working with Simulated Annealing (SA). Although it represents a small sample of the research activity on SA, the book will certainly serve as a valuable tool for researchers interested in getting involved in this multidisciplinary field. In fact, one of the salient features is that the book is highly multidisciplinary in terms of application areas since it assembles experts from the fields of Biology, Telecommunications, Geology, Electronics and Medicine
SoK: Chasing Accuracy and Privacy, and Catching Both in Differentially Private Histogram Publication
Histograms and synthetic data are of key importance in data analysis. However, researchers have shown that even aggregated data such as histograms, containing no obvious sensitive attributes, can result in privacy leakage. To enable data analysis, a strong notion of privacy is required to avoid risking unintended privacy violations.Such a strong notion of privacy is differential privacy, a statistical notion of privacy that makes privacy leakage quantifiable. The caveat regarding differential privacy is that while it has strong guarantees for privacy, privacy comes at a cost of accuracy. Despite this trade-off being a central and important issue in the adoption of differential privacy, there exists a gap in the literature regarding providing an understanding of the trade-off and how to address it appropriately. Through a systematic literature review (SLR), we investigate the state-of-the-art within accuracy improving differentially private algorithms for histogram and synthetic data publishing. Our contribution is two-fold: 1) we identify trends and connections in the contributions to the field of differential privacy for histograms and synthetic data and 2) we provide an understanding of the privacy/accuracy trade-off challenge by crystallizing different dimensions to accuracy improvement. Accordingly, we position and visualize the ideas in relation to each other and external work, and deconstruct each algorithm to examine the building blocks separately with the aim of pinpointing which dimension of accuracy improvement each technique/approach is targeting. Hence, this systematization of knowledge (SoK) provides an understanding of in which dimensions and how accuracy improvement can be pursued without sacrificing privacy
