Multi-user video streaming using unequal error protection network coding in wireless networks
In this paper, we investigate a multi-user video streaming system applying unequal error protection (UEP) network coding (NC) for simultaneous real-time exchange of scalable video streams among multiple users. We focus on a simple wireless scenario where users exchange encoded data packets over a common central network node (e.g., a base station or an access point) that aims to capture the fundamental system behaviour. Our goal is to present analytical tools that provide both the decoding probability analysis and the expected delay guarantees for different importance layers of scalable video streams. Using the proposed tools, we offer a simple framework for design and analysis of UEP NC based multi-user video streaming systems and provide examples of system design for video conferencing scenario in broadband wireless cellular networks
Random Linear Network Coding for 5G Mobile Video Delivery
An exponential increase in mobile video delivery will continue with the
demand for higher resolution, multi-view and large-scale multicast video
services. Novel fifth generation (5G) 3GPP New Radio (NR) standard will bring a
number of new opportunities for optimizing video delivery across both 5G core
and radio access networks. One of the promising approaches for video quality
adaptation, throughput enhancement and erasure protection is the use of
packet-level random linear network coding (RLNC). In this review paper, we
discuss the integration of RLNC into the 5G NR standard, building upon the
ideas and opportunities identified in 4G LTE. We explicitly identify and
discuss in detail novel 5G NR features that provide support for RLNC-based
video delivery in 5G, thus pointing out to the promising avenues for future
research.Comment: Invited paper for Special Issue "Network and Rateless Coding for

Minimum Distortion Variance Concatenated Block Codes for Embedded Source Transmission
Some state-of-art multimedia source encoders produce embedded source bit
streams that upon the reliable reception of only a fraction of the total bit
stream, the decoder is able reconstruct the source up to a basic quality.
Reliable reception of later source bits gradually improve the reconstruction
quality. Examples include scalable extensions of H.264/AVC and progressive
image coders such as JPEG2000. To provide an efficient protection for embedded
source bit streams, a concatenated block coding scheme using a minimum mean
distortion criterion was considered in the past. Although, the original design
was shown to achieve better mean distortion characteristics than previous
studies, the proposed coding structure was leading to dramatic quality
fluctuations. In this paper, a modification of the original design is first
presented and then the second order statistics of the distortion is taken into
account in the optimization. More specifically, an extension scheme is proposed
using a minimum distortion variance optimization criterion. This robust system
design is tested for an image transmission scenario. Numerical results show
that the proposed extension achieves significantly lower variance than the
original design, while showing similar mean distortion performance using both
convolutional codes and low density parity check codes.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, In Proc. of International Conference on

Inter-session Network Coding for Transmitting Multiple Layered Streams over Single-hop Wireless Networks
This paper studies the problem of transmitting multiple independent layered
video streams over single-hop wireless networks using network coding (NC). We
combine feedback-free random linear NC (RLNC) with unequal error protection
(UEP) and our goal is to investigate the benefits of coding across streams,
i.e. inter session NC. To this end, we present a transmission scheme that in
addition to mixing packets of different layers of each stream (intra-session
NC), mixes packets of different streams as well. Then, we propose the
analytical formulation of the layer decoding probabilities for each user and
utilize it to define a theoretical performance metric. Assessing this
performance metric under various scenarios, it is observed that inter-session
NC improves the trade-off among the performances of users. Furthermore, the
analytical results show that the throughput gain of inter-session NC over
intra-session NC increases with the number of independent streams and also by
increasing packet error rate, but degrades as network becomes more
heterogeneous.Comment: Accepted to be presented at 2014 IEEE Information Theory Workshop

Optimized Network-coded Scalable Video Multicasting over eMBMS Networks
Delivery of multicast video services over fourth generation (4G) networks
such as 3GPP Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) is gaining momentum. In this
paper, we address the issue of efficiently multicasting layered video services
by defining a novel resource allocation framework that aims to maximize the
service coverage whilst keeping the radio resource footprint low. A key point
in the proposed system mode is that the reliability of multicast video services
is ensured by means of an Unequal Error Protection implementation of the
Network Coding (UEP-NC) scheme. In addition, both the communication parameters
and the UEP-NC scheme are jointly optimized by the proposed resource allocation
framework. Numerical results show that the proposed allocation framework can
significantly increase the service coverage when compared to a conventional
Multi-rate Transmission (MrT) strategy.Comment: Proc. of IEEE ICC 2015 - Mobile and Wireless Networking Symposium, to
