Smart Grid Communications: Overview of Research Challenges, Solutions, and Standardization Activities
Optimization of energy consumption in future intelligent energy networks (or
Smart Grids) will be based on grid-integrated near-real-time communications
between various grid elements in generation, transmission, distribution and
loads. This paper discusses some of the challenges and opportunities of
communications research in the areas of smart grid and smart metering. In
particular, we focus on some of the key communications challenges for realizing
interoperable and future-proof smart grid/metering networks, smart grid
security and privacy, and how some of the existing networking technologies can
be applied to energy management. Finally, we also discuss the coordinated
standardization efforts in Europe to harmonize communications standards and

Machine Learning DDoS Detection for Consumer Internet of Things Devices
An increasing number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices are connecting to
the Internet, yet many of these devices are fundamentally insecure, exposing
the Internet to a variety of attacks. Botnets such as Mirai have used insecure
consumer IoT devices to conduct distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on
critical Internet infrastructure. This motivates the development of new
techniques to automatically detect consumer IoT attack traffic. In this paper,
we demonstrate that using IoT-specific network behaviors (e.g. limited number
of endpoints and regular time intervals between packets) to inform feature
selection can result in high accuracy DDoS detection in IoT network traffic
with a variety of machine learning algorithms, including neural networks. These
results indicate that home gateway routers or other network middleboxes could
automatically detect local IoT device sources of DDoS attacks using low-cost
machine learning algorithms and traffic data that is flow-based and

The components that make up a smart home are at risk for different types of attacks; therefore, security engineers are developing solutions to current problems and are predicting future types of attacks. This paper will analyze IoT smart home components, explain current security risks, and suggest possible solutions. Sensing as a Service Model for Smart Cities Supported by Internet of Things
The world population is growing at a rapid pace. Towns and cities are
accommodating half of the world's population thereby creating tremendous
pressure on every aspect of urban living. Cities are known to have large
concentration of resources and facilities. Such environments attract people
from rural areas. However, unprecedented attraction has now become an
overwhelming issue for city governance and politics. The enormous pressure
towards efficient city management has triggered various Smart City initiatives
by both government and private sector businesses to invest in ICT to find
sustainable solutions to the growing issues. The Internet of Things (IoT) has
also gained significant attention over the past decade. IoT envisions to
connect billions of sensors to the Internet and expects to use them for
efficient and effective resource management in Smart Cities. Today
infrastructure, platforms, and software applications are offered as services
using cloud technologies. In this paper, we explore the concept of sensing as a
service and how it fits with the Internet of Things. Our objective is to
investigate the concept of sensing as a service model in technological,
economical, and social perspectives and identify the major open challenges and
