Does color modalities affect handwriting recognition? An empirical study on Persian handwritings using convolutional neural networks
Most of the methods on handwritten recognition in the literature are focused
and evaluated on Black and White (BW) image databases. In this paper we try to
answer a fundamental question in document recognition. Using Convolutional
Neural Networks (CNNs), as eye simulator, we investigate to see whether color
modalities of handwritten digits and words affect their recognition accuracy or
speed? To the best of our knowledge, so far this question has not been answered
due to the lack of handwritten databases that have all three color modalities
of handwritings. To answer this question, we selected 13,330 isolated digits
and 62,500 words from a novel Persian handwritten database, which have three
different color modalities and are unique in term of size and variety. Our
selected datasets are divided into training, validation, and testing sets.
Afterwards, similar conventional CNN models are trained with the training
samples. While the experimental results on the testing set show that CNN on the
BW digit and word images has a higher performance compared to the other two
color modalities, in general there are no significant differences for network
accuracy in different color modalities. Also, comparisons of training times in
three color modalities show that recognition of handwritten digits and words in
BW images using CNN is much more efficient
Advancements and Challenges in Arabic Optical Character Recognition: A Comprehensive Survey
Optical character recognition (OCR) is a vital process that involves the
extraction of handwritten or printed text from scanned or printed images,
converting it into a format that can be understood and processed by machines.
This enables further data processing activities such as searching and editing.
The automatic extraction of text through OCR plays a crucial role in digitizing
documents, enhancing productivity, improving accessibility, and preserving
historical records. This paper seeks to offer an exhaustive review of
contemporary applications, methodologies, and challenges associated with Arabic
Optical Character Recognition (OCR). A thorough analysis is conducted on
prevailing techniques utilized throughout the OCR process, with a dedicated
effort to discern the most efficacious approaches that demonstrate enhanced
outcomes. To ensure a thorough evaluation, a meticulous keyword-search
methodology is adopted, encompassing a comprehensive analysis of articles
relevant to Arabic OCR, including both backward and forward citation reviews.
In addition to presenting cutting-edge techniques and methods, this paper
critically identifies research gaps within the realm of Arabic OCR. By
highlighting these gaps, we shed light on potential areas for future
exploration and development, thereby guiding researchers toward promising
avenues in the field of Arabic OCR. The outcomes of this study provide valuable
insights for researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders involved in Arabic
OCR, ultimately fostering advancements in the field and facilitating the
creation of more accurate and efficient OCR systems for the Arabic language
Recognition techniques for online Arabic handwriting recognition systems
Online recognition of Arabic handwritten text has been an on-going research problem for many years. Generally,
online text recognition field has been gaining more interest
lately due to the increasing popularity of hand-held computers, digital notebooks and advanced cellular phones. However, different techniques have been used to build several online handwritten recognition systems for Arabic text, such as Neural Networks, Hidden Markov Model, Template Matching and others. Most of the researches on online text recognition have divided the recognition system into these three main phases which are preprocessing phase, feature extraction phase and recognition phase which considers as the most important phase and the heart of the whole system. This paper presents and compares techniques that have been used to recognize the Arabic handwriting scripts in online recognition systems. Those techniques attempt to recognize Arabic handwritten words, characters, digits or strokes. The structure and strategy of those reviewed techniques are explained in this article. The strengths and weaknesses of using these techniques will also be discussed
Handwritten Digit Recognition and Classification Using Machine Learning
In this paper, multiple learning techniques based on Optical character recognition (OCR) for the handwritten digit recognition are examined, and a new accuracy level for recognition of the MNIST dataset is reported. The proposed framework involves three primary parts, image pre-processing, feature extraction and classification. This study strives to improve the recognition accuracy by more than 99% in handwritten digit recognition. As will be seen, pre-processing and feature extraction play crucial roles in this experiment to reach the highest accuracy
An Online Numeral Recognition System Using Improved Structural Features – A Unified Method for Handwritten Arabic and Persian Numerals
With the advances in machine learning techniques, handwritten recognition systems also gained importance. Though digit recognition techniques have been established for online handwritten numerals, an optimized technique that is writer independent is still an open area of research. In this paper, we propose an enhanced unified method for the recognition of handwritten Arabic and Persian numerals using improved structural features. A total of 37 structural based features are extracted and Random Forest classifier is used to classify the numerals based on the extracted features. The results of the proposed approach are compared with other classifiers including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). Four different well-known Arabic and Persian databases are used to validate the proposed method. The obtained average 96.15% accuracy in recognition of handwritten digits shows that the proposed method is more efficient and produces better results as compared to other techniques
NeuroWrite: Predictive Handwritten Digit Classification using Deep Neural Networks
The rapid evolution of deep neural networks has revolutionized the field of
machine learning, enabling remarkable advancements in various domains. In this
article, we introduce NeuroWrite, a unique method for predicting the
categorization of handwritten digits using deep neural networks. Our model
exhibits outstanding accuracy in identifying and categorising handwritten
digits by utilising the strength of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and
recurrent neural networks (RNNs).In this article, we give a thorough
examination of the data preparation methods, network design, and training
methods used in NeuroWrite. By implementing state-of-the-art techniques, we
showcase how NeuroWrite can achieve high classification accuracy and robust
generalization on handwritten digit datasets, such as MNIST. Furthermore, we
explore the model's potential for real-world applications, including digit
recognition in digitized documents, signature verification, and automated
postal code recognition. NeuroWrite is a useful tool for computer vision and
pattern recognition because of its performance and adaptability. The
architecture, training procedure, and evaluation metrics of NeuroWrite are
covered in detail in this study, illustrating how it can improve a number of
applications that call for handwritten digit classification. The outcomes show
that NeuroWrite is a promising method for raising the bar for deep neural
network-based handwritten digit recognition.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figure
