PRODUCT LIFECYCLE DATA SHARING AND VISUALISATION: WEB-BASED APPROACHES
Both product design and manufacturing are intrinsically collaborative processes. From conception and design to project completion and ongoing maintenance, all points in the lifecycle of any product involve the work of fluctuating teams of designers, suppliers and customers. That is why companies are involved in the creation of a distributed design and a manufacturing environment which could provide an effective way to communicate and share information throughout the entire enterprise and the supply chain. At present, the technologies that support such a strategy are based on World Wide Web platforms and follow two different paths. The first one focuses on 2D documentation improvement and introduces 3D interactive information in order to add knowledge to drawings. The second one works directly on 3D models and tries to extend the life of 3D data moving these design information downstream through the entire product lifecycle. Unfortunately the actual lack of a unique 3D Web-based standard has stimulated the growing up of many different proprietary and open source standards and, as a consequence, a production of an incompatible information exchange over the WEB. This paper proposes a structured analysis of Web-based solutions, trying to identify the most critical aspects to promote a unique 3D digital standard model capable of sharing product and manufacturing data more effectively—regardless of geographic boundaries, data structures, processes or computing environmen
Survey on some key technologies of virtual tourism system based on Web3D
Some key technologies on how to build large-scale virtual tourism systssems comprehensively on Web browsers and mobiles were analyzed and the current R&D status on Web3D virtual tourism was surveyed insightfully. Then, some methods were summarized, including 3D trees or plants modeling, 3D architectural modeling, 3D Virtual Human behavior modeling, virtual agents path planning, collision detection and progressive transmission strategy suitable for developing large scale Web3D tourism scenarios. Also, some bottleneck problems of Web3D virtual tourism system were investigated. At the same time, the lightweight 3D engine, the lightweight 3D modeling, the lightweight 3D streaming and P2P based progressive transmission of huge Web3D tourism contents would become much helpful to breakthrough those bottlenecks of Web3D tourism systems were pointed out. In addition, all kinds of Web3D engines in terms of lightweight, realism and efficiency that would be a good reference for developers to choose during various applications were compared comprehensively. Finally, the prospect of future investigation of Web3D tourism system is presented, which will be going on in terms of four characteristics lightweight, high-speed, realism, beauty.
The Layered Virtual Reality Commerce System (LaVRCS): An Approach to Creating Viable VRCommerce Sites
In this paper, the authors argue that Virtual Reality (VR) does have a place in an e-commerce environment. However, VR is not yet ready to supplant standard e-commerce Web interfaces with a completely immersive VR environment. Rather, Virtual Reality in e-commerce (VRCommerce) must rely on a mixed platform presentation to account for various levels of usability, user trust, and technical feasibility. The authors propose that e-commerce sites that want to implement VRCommerce offer at least three layers of interaction to users: a standard Web interface, embedded VR objects in a Web interface, and semi-immersive VR within an existing Web interface. This system is termed the Layered Virtual Reality Commerce System, or LaVRCS
Online platform for home design and project management in modular construction
The construction industry is currently facing the
challenges of intensifying global competition, increasing market
volatility, increasing product differentiation, and shortening
product life cycles. In this context, versatile production concepts
with modular structures promise a better adaptation to these
dynamic boundary conditions in terms of quantity production,
product variety, and manufacturing location. Modular
construction has significant advantages over traditional on-site
construction in terms of material efficiency, safety, and
sustainability. Therefore, specialized software for building design
is one of the critical aspects of modular construction. This work
presents the development of an online platform for the design of
buildings using modular construction. The main features of this
platform are the 2D home design with 3D visualization, using BIM
approaches, the validation of architectural rules and system limits
taking into consideration the design and legal framework, and the
management of orders and workflows for sustainable
construction. The validation of architecture rules and system
limits allows the use of the platform by final clients to design their
houses and obtain the budget and the construction viability based
on modular construction. After, an architect can assume the final
design and legal approvement of the project. This work was supported by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência

A new navigation paradigm for virtual reality: the guided visit through a virtual world
The three main navigation paradigms for virtual worlds, i.e., free navigation, automatic tours, and multiuser navigation show important limitations when dealing with guided visits that involve interactive cooperation among several users in 3D virtual worlds over the Internet. In this paper, we present our research into this issue and some important results. We propose a new navigation paradigm denominated guided visit through a virtual world, where the capacity of a user guiding several remote users through the virtual world is enriched with the capacity to dynamically interchange the role of guiding between the connected users. The user that acts as a guide moves freely through the virtual world, and his/her movements are reproduced by the browsers of the other guided users. We also present the architecture and the system we developed that implements this paradigm, as well as its integration in a working realworld application that demonstrates its use
A 3D e-Commerce Applications Development Model: A Systematic Literature Review
Due to limitations of current e-commerce websites and today’s highly competitive e-commerce environment, businesses using Virtual Reality technologies to improve customers' interactivity, by providing shopping experiences with their products and services similar to the real-life shopping, are better recognized. In this paper, the key aspects of 3D e-commerce research areas are investigated by using a systematic literature review approach. In the review, research areas such as design, trust, marketing, Augmented Reality and product presentation, business practices, interface quality, shopping experience and behavior as well as consumer learning along with other related issues are identified and discussed. A conceptual model is then proposed to highlight and provide insights for future research on how to develop a business model in 3D e-commerce environments
Design of a multiuser virtual trade fair using a game engine
The current world economic situation makes it necessary to develop new ways of establishing commercial relationships. One possible solution is to explore the advantages of virtual worlds, and for this reason online virtual trade fairs are becoming more popular in the business world. They enable companies to establish a trade relationship with their customers without the need to visit them in person. This is very attractive for exhibitors because it can save them money, which is a priority for many companies today. In this line, this article presents a multiuser virtual trade fair developed using 3D game engine technologys. Users represented by avatars can interact with each other while they are visiting the virtual fair, which has some interactive objects included in the stands to provide information about the exhibitors. This virtual world is accessible online, and visitors only require a plug-in on their computers to be able to enter the virtual world. The game technology makes it possible to obtain a high degree of realism: very real lighting, cast shadows, collision detection, etc. Moreover, the virtual world presented builds the 3D objects automatically. Participants in the trade fair can customize their virtual stand and the application will generate the code necessary for its inclusion in the rendered virtual world. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology project TIN2010-21089-C03-03.
