A Survey on Compiler Autotuning using Machine Learning
Since the mid-1990s, researchers have been trying to use machine-learning
based approaches to solve a number of different compiler optimization problems.
These techniques primarily enhance the quality of the obtained results and,
more importantly, make it feasible to tackle two main compiler optimization
problems: optimization selection (choosing which optimizations to apply) and
phase-ordering (choosing the order of applying optimizations). The compiler
optimization space continues to grow due to the advancement of applications,
increasing number of compiler optimizations, and new target architectures.
Generic optimization passes in compilers cannot fully leverage newly introduced
optimizations and, therefore, cannot keep up with the pace of increasing
options. This survey summarizes and classifies the recent advances in using
machine learning for the compiler optimization field, particularly on the two
major problems of (1) selecting the best optimizations and (2) the
phase-ordering of optimizations. The survey highlights the approaches taken so
far, the obtained results, the fine-grain classification among different
approaches and finally, the influential papers of the field.Comment: version 5.0 (updated on September 2018)- Preprint Version For our

Cloud computing resource scheduling and a survey of its evolutionary approaches
A disruptive technology fundamentally transforming the way that computing services are delivered, cloud computing offers information and communication technology users a new dimension of convenience of resources, as services via the Internet. Because cloud provides a finite pool of virtualized on-demand resources, optimally scheduling them has become an essential and rewarding topic, where a trend of using Evolutionary Computation (EC) algorithms is emerging rapidly. Through analyzing the cloud computing architecture, this survey first presents taxonomy at two levels of scheduling cloud resources. It then paints a landscape of the scheduling problem and solutions. According to the taxonomy, a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art approaches is presented systematically. Looking forward, challenges and potential future research directions are investigated and invited, including real-time scheduling, adaptive dynamic scheduling, large-scale scheduling, multiobjective scheduling, and distributed and parallel scheduling. At the dawn of Industry 4.0, cloud computing scheduling for cyber-physical integration with the presence of big data is also discussed. Research in this area is only in its infancy, but with the rapid fusion of information and data technology, more exciting and agenda-setting topics are likely to emerge on the horizon
Hybrid Evolutionary Shape Manipulation for Efficient Hull Form Design Optimisation
‘Eco-friendly shipping’ and fuel efficiency are gaining much attention in the maritime industry due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations and volatile fuel prices. The shape of hull affects the overall performance in efficiency and stability of ships. Despite the advantages of simulation-based design, the application of a formal optimisation process in actual ship design work is limited. A hybrid approach which integrates a morphing technique into a multi-objective genetic algorithm to automate and optimise the hull form design is developed. It is envisioned that the proposed hybrid approach will improve the hydrodynamic performance as well as overall efficiency of the design process
Multi objective optimization in charge management of micro grid based multistory carpark
Distributed power supply with the use of renewable energy sources and intelligent energy flow management has undoubtedly become one of the pressing trends in modern power engineering, which also inspired researchers from other fields to contribute to the topic. There are several kinds of micro grid platforms, each facing its own challenges and thus making the problem purely multi objective. In this paper, an evolutionary driven algorithm is applied and evaluated on a real platform represented by a private multistory carpark equipped with photovoltaic solar panels and several battery packs. The algorithm works as a core of an adaptive charge management system based on predicted conditions represented by estimated electric load and production in the future hours. The outcome of the paper is a comparison of the optimized and unoptimized charge management on three different battery setups proving that optimization may often outperform a battery setup with larger capacity in several criteria.Web of Science117art. no. 179
An Energy-driven Network Function Virtualization for Multi-domain Software Defined Networks
Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) in Software Defined Networks (SDN)
emerged as a new technology for creating virtual instances for smooth execution
of multiple applications. Their amalgamation provides flexible and programmable
platforms to utilize the network resources for providing Quality of Service
(QoS) to various applications. In SDN-enabled NFV setups, the underlying
network services can be viewed as a series of virtual network functions (VNFs)
and their optimal deployment on physical/virtual nodes is considered a
challenging task to perform. However, SDNs have evolved from single-domain to
multi-domain setups in the recent era. Thus, the complexity of the underlying
VNF deployment problem in multi-domain setups has increased manifold. Moreover,
the energy utilization aspect is relatively unexplored with respect to an
optimal mapping of VNFs across multiple SDN domains. Hence, in this work, the
VNF deployment problem in multi-domain SDN setup has been addressed with a
primary emphasis on reducing the overall energy consumption for deploying the
maximum number of VNFs with guaranteed QoS. The problem in hand is initially
formulated as a "Multi-objective Optimization Problem" based on Integer Linear
Programming (ILP) to obtain an optimal solution. However, the formulated ILP
becomes complex to solve with an increasing number of decision variables and
constraints with an increase in the size of the network. Thus, we leverage the
benefits of the popular evolutionary optimization algorithms to solve the
problem under consideration. In order to deduce the most appropriate
evolutionary optimization algorithm to solve the considered problem, it is
subjected to different variants of evolutionary algorithms on the widely used
MOEA framework (an open source java framework based on multi-objective
evolutionary algorithms).Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE INFOCOM 2019 Workshop on Intelligent

Ergonomic Chair Design by Fusing Qualitative and Quantitative Criteria using Interactive Genetic Algorithms
This paper emphasizes the necessity of formally bringing qualitative and
quantitative criteria of ergonomic design together, and provides a novel
complementary design framework with this aim. Within this framework, different
design criteria are viewed as optimization objectives; and design solutions are
iteratively improved through the cooperative efforts of computer and user. The
framework is rooted in multi-objective optimization, genetic algorithms and
interactive user evaluation. Three different algorithms based on the framework
are developed, and tested with an ergonomic chair design problem. The parallel
and multi-objective approaches show promising results in fitness convergence,
design diversity and user satisfaction metrics
Autonomic Cloud Computing: Open Challenges and Architectural Elements
As Clouds are complex, large-scale, and heterogeneous distributed systems,
management of their resources is a challenging task. They need automated and
integrated intelligent strategies for provisioning of resources to offer
services that are secure, reliable, and cost-efficient. Hence, effective
management of services becomes fundamental in software platforms that
constitute the fabric of computing Clouds. In this direction, this paper
identifies open issues in autonomic resource provisioning and presents
innovative management techniques for supporting SaaS applications hosted on
Clouds. We present a conceptual architecture and early results evidencing the
benefits of autonomic management of Clouds.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, conference keynote pape
