    Contiguity orders

    Get PDF
This paper is devoted to the study of contiguity orders i.e. orders having a linear extension extension L such that all upper (or lower) cover sets are intervals of L. This new class is a strict generalization of both interval orders and N-free orders and is linearly recognizable. It is proved that computing the number of contiguity extensions is #P-complete and that the dimension of height one contiguity orders is polynomially tractable. Moreover the membership is a comparability invariant on bi-contiguity orders. Finally for strong-contiguity orders the calculation of the dimension is NP-complete

    Four Variations on Graded Posets

We explore the enumeration of some natural classes of graded posets, including all graded posets, (2+2)- and (3+1)-avoiding graded posets, (2+2)-avoiding graded posets, and (3+1)-avoiding graded posets. We obtain enumerative and structural theorems for all of them. Along the way, we discuss a situation when we can switch between enumeration of labeled and unlabeled objects with ease, generalize a result of Postnikov and Stanley from the theory of hyperplane arrangements, answer a question posed by Stanley, and see an old result of Klarner in a new light.Comment: 28 page

The generalized lognormal distribution and the Stieltjes moment problem

    Get PDF
This paper studies a Stieltjes-type moment problem defined by the generalized lognormal distribution, a heavy-tailed distribution with applications in economics, finance and related fields. It arises as the distribution of the exponential of a random variable following a generalized error distribution, and hence figures prominently in the EGARCH model of asset price volatility. Compared to the classical lognormal distribution it has an additional shape parameter. It emerges that moment (in)determinacy depends on the value of this parameter: for some values, the distribution does not have finite moments of all orders, hence the moment problem is not of interest in these cases. For other values, the distribution has moments of all orders, yet it is moment-indeterminate. Finally, a limiting case is supported on a bounded interval, and hence determined by its moments. For those generalized lognormal distributions that are moment-indeterminate Stieltjes classes of moment-equivalent distributions are presented.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figur
