Can fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Making improve Strategic planning by balanced scorecard?

Strategic management is momentous for organizational success and competitive advantage in an increasingly turbulent business environment. Balanced scorecard (BSC) is a framework for evaluating strategic management performance which translates strategy into action via various sets of performance measurement indicators. The main objective of this research is to develop a new fuzzy group Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) model for strategic plans selection process in the BSC. For this to happen, the current study has implemented linguistic extension of MCDM model for robust selection of strategic plans. The new linguistic reasoning for group decision making is able to aggregate subjective evaluation of the decision makers and hence create an opportunity to perform more robust strategic plans, despite of the vagueness and uncertainty of strategic plans selection process. A numerical example demonstrates possibilities for the improvement of BSC through applying the proposed model

Ontology for performance measurement indicators’ comparison

Indicators are widely used by organizations as a way of evaluating, measuring and classifying organizational performance. As part of performance evaluation systems, indicators are often shared or compared across internal sectors or with other organizations. However, indicators can be vague and imprecise, and also can lack semantics, making comparisons with other indicators difficult. Thus, this paper presents a knowledge model based on an ontology that may be used to represent indicators semantically and generically, dealing with the imprecision and vagueness, and thus facilitating better comparison. Semantic technologies are shown to be suitable for this solution, so that it could be able to represent complex data involved in indicators comparison

Today performance evaluation is known as an inevitable part of management knowledge; in such a way that it can help an organization to consume sources and facilities in an optimum way and also achieve its goals and strategies. In this paper for evaluating the performance of aircraft maintenance unit in Iran, Balanced Scorecard (BSC), a strategic management method for performance measurement using a set of financial and non-financial performance metrics, and Fuzzy Multiple Criteria Decision Making (FMCDM) has been used. 26 criteria for performance evaluation in four BSC perspectives by help of maintenance unit’s experts have been specified. The criteria’s weights via Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method by using Fuzzy Preference Programming (FPP) approach determined and finally fuzzy VIKOR method has been used to measure the performance of three aircraft maintenance units. Results of research shows that FAHP-FVKIOR evaluation method by BSC can be a useful tool for optimum measuring of performance

In a competitive environment changes rapidly occur therefore managers of organizations facing some challenges such as identifying important factors affecting organizational optimum usage of available resources. Thus, organizational performance evaluation is a crucial task to do and sensitive process in any industry. The objective of this study is to construct an approach based on the   balanced scorecard (BSC) and fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) for evaluating the aircraft maintenance department in Iran. The BSC concept is applied to define the hierarchy with four major perspectives (i.e. financial, customer, internal business process, and learning and growth), and performance indicators are selected for each perspective. A Fuzzy AHP (FAHP) approach is then proposed in order to tolerate vagueness and ambiguity of information. A FAHP information system is finally constructed to facilitate the solving process. The results provide guidance to the aircraft maintenance department in Iran regarding strategies for improving department performance. The results show that financial indicator (0.305) and learning and growth indicator (0.255) have higher impacts on the objective. The constructed information system is suggested to be a good tool for solving other multiple-criteria decision-making problems

A fuzzy-QFD approach to balanced scorecard using an analytic network process

    No full text
The balanced scorecard (BSC) is a strategic management method that links performance measurement to vision and strategies using a multidimensional set of financial and non-financial performance metrics. Although several studies have combined the BSC method with multi-criteria decision analysis methodologies, most of the research efforts do not consider the essentials of strategic and performance management in a systematic and holistic framework capable of handling imprecision and vagueness. The purpose of this study is to present a novel approach for structuring and prioritising the performance measures in the BSC method. The contribution of the proposed approach is fivefold: 1) we use the quality function deployment (QFD) technique to create a linkage between the BSC perspectives; 2) we use the analytic network process (ANP) technique to consider the interactions between the performance measures in each BSC perspective; 3) we integrate the QFD and the ANP techniques to help decision makers understand the relations between the performance measures in different perspectives and the correlations among the performance measures in the same perspective; 4) we handle the vagueness and ambiguity in decision makers’ judgements with the fuzzy set theory; 5) we present a case study to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach and exhibit the efficacy of the procedures

Abstract: Indicators are widely used by organizations in order to assess, measure and classify organizational performance. Integral part of performance evaluation systems, indicators are often shared or compared among different domestic sectors or even other organizations. However, some indicators have associated certain vagueness and imprecision, as well as lack of semantics. Thus, this thesis held to present a model of knowledge based on ontology and fuzzy logic to represent in a semantic and generic way, with regard to the imprecision and vagueness, and contribute by including the perception of temporality and the relationship between indicators. Using the methodology Design Science Research Methodology, the model it was considered appropriate, showing, by conducting interviews, the importance of representation of imprecision, vagueness, temporality and the relationship between different indicators in the performance measurement context
