    Digital Controlled Multi-phase Buck Converter with Accurate Voltage and Current Control

    abstract: A 4-phase, quasi-current-mode hysteretic buck converter with digital frequency synchronization, online comparator offset-calibration and digital current sharing control is presented. The switching frequency of the hysteretic converter is digitally synchronized to the input clock reference with less than ±1.5% error in the switching frequency range of 3-9.5MHz. The online offset calibration cancels the input-referred offset of the hysteretic comparator and enables ±1.1% voltage regulation accuracy. Maximum current-sharing error of ±3.6% is achieved by a duty-cycle-calibrated delay line based PWM generator, without affecting the phase synchronization timing sequence. In light load conditions, individual converter phases can be disabled, and the final stage power converter output stage is segmented for high efficiency.     Time-Domain/Digital Frequency Synchronized Hysteresis Based Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator

    abstract: Power management integrated circuit (PMIC) design is a key module in almost all electronics around us such as Phones, Tablets, Computers, Laptop, Electric vehicles, etc. The on-chip loads such as microprocessors cores, memories, Analog/RF, etc. requires multiple supply voltage domains. Providing these supply voltages from off-chip voltage regulators will increase the overall system cost and limits the performance due to the board and package parasitics. Therefore, an on-chip fully integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) is required. The dissertation presents a topology for a fully integrated power stage in a DC-DC buck converter achieving a high-power density and a time-domain hysteresis based highly integrated buck converter. A multi-phase time-domain comparator is proposed in this work for implementing the hysteresis control, thereby achieving a process scaling friendly highly digital design. A higher-order LC notch filter along with a flying capacitor which couples the input and output voltage ripple is implemented. The power stage operates at 500 MHz and can deliver a maximum power of 1.0 W and load current of 1.67 A, while occupying 1.21 mm2 active die area. Thus achieving a power density of 0.867 W/mm2 and current density of 1.377 A/mm2. The peak efficiency obtained is 71% at 780 mA of load current. The power stage with the additional off-chip LC is utilized to design a highly integrated current mode hysteretic buck converter operating at 180 MHz. It achieves 20 ns of settling and 2-5 ns of rise/fall time for reference tracking. The second part of the dissertation discusses an integrated low voltage switched-capacitor based power sensor, to measure the output power of a DC-DC boost converter. This approach results in a lower complexity, area, power consumption, and a lower component count for the overall PV MPPT system. Designed in a 180 nm CMOS process, the circuit can operate with a supply voltage of 1.8 V. It achieves a power sense accuracy of 7.6%, occupies a die area of 0.0519 mm2, and consumes 0.748 mW of power.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201

    AN ENERGY BASED MINIMUM-TIME OPTIMAL CONTROL OF DC-DC CONVERTERS

    Time-optimal response is an important and sometimes necessary characteristic of dynamic systems for specific applications. Power converters are widely used in different electrical systems and their dynamic response will affect the whole system. In many electrical systems like microgrids or voltage regulators which supplies sensitive loads fast dynamic response is a must. Minimum time is the fastest converter to compensate the step output reference or load change. Boost converters as one of the wildly used power converters in the electrical systems are aimed to be controlled in optimal time in this study. Linear controllers are not able to provide the optimal response for a boost converter however they are still useful and functional for other applications like reference tracking or stabilization. To obtain the fastest possible response from boost converters, a nonlinear control approach based on the total energy of the system is studied in this research. Total energy of the system considers as the basis for developing the presented method, since it is easy and accurate to measure besides that the total energy of the system represents the actual operating condition of the boost converter. The detailed model of a boost converter is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink to achieve the time optimal response of the boost converter by applying the developed method. The simulation results confirmed the ability of the presented method to secure the time optimal response of the boost converter under four different scenarios

    An agile supply modulator with improved transient performance for power efficient linear amplifier employing envelope tracking techniques

    This article presents an agile supply modulator with optimal transient performance that includes improvement in rise time, overshoot and settling time for the envelope tracking supply in linear power amplifiers. For this purpose, we propose an on-demand current source module: the bang-bang transient performance enhancer (BBTPE). Its objective is to follow fast variations in input signals with reduced overshoot and settling time without deteriorating the steady-state performance of the buck regulator. The proposed approach enables fast system response through the BBTPE and an accurate steady-state output response through a low switching ripple and power efficient dynamic buck regulator. Fast output response with the help of the added module induces a slower rise of inductor current in the buck converter that further helps the proposed system to reduce both overshoot and settling time. This article also introduces an efficient selective tracking of envelope signal for linear PAs. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solution, extensive simulations and experimental results from a discrete system are reported. The proposed supply modulator shows 80% improvement in rise time along with 60% reduction in both overshoot and settling time compared to the conventional dynamic buck regulator-based solution. Experimental results using the LTE 16-QAM 5 MHz standard shows improvement of 7.68 dB and 65.1% in adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) and error vector magnitude (EVM), respectively.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    A Fast Transient Response ESR-Controlled Fixed Frequency Hysteretic Buck Converter

    Modern application processors (microprocessors and Digital Signal Processors) are power hungry and demand power management solutions that can withstand their frequent and high slew-rate load transients while regulating their supply in a tight voltage tolerance. Hysteretic converter has excellent transient response performance but its variable switching frequency causes concern for electromagnetic interference in noise sensitive applications. A new frequency stabilization scheme for hysteretic buck dc-dc converters is proposed in this thesis. The equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the output capacitor is regulated by a phase-locked loop (PLL) to stabilize the operating frequency of the converter. The proposed fixed frequency ESR-controlled converter achieves a fixed 2MHz switching frequency, with less than 1”s response time to a 500mA load step while limiting undershoot and overshoot on the output voltage to 50mV and 40mV respectively. The performance of the presented work shows that the ESR of the output capacitor of a Hysteretic Buck Converter can be controlled to stabilize the switching frequency of the Hysteretic DC-DC Converter

    Scalability of Quasi-hysteretic FSM-based Digitally Controlled Single-inductor Dual-string Buck LED Driver To Multiple Strings

    There has been growing interest in Single-Inductor Multiple-Output (SIMO) DC-DC converters due to its reduced cost and smaller form factor in comparison with using multiple single-output converters. An application for such a SIMO-based switching converter is to drive multiple LED strings in a multi-channel LED display. This paper proposes a quasi-hysteretic FSM-based digitally controlled Single-Inductor Dual-Output (SIDO) buck switching LED Driver operating in Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) and extends it to drive multiple outputs. Based on the time-multiplexing control scheme in DCM, a theoretical upper limit of the total number of outputs in a SIMO buck switching LED driver for various backlight LED current values can be derived analytically. The advantages of the proposed SIMO LED driver include reducing the controller design complexity by eliminating loop compensation, driving more LED strings without limited by the maximum LED current rating, performing digital dimming with no additional switches required, and optimization of local bus voltage to compensate for variability of LED forward voltage (VF) in each individual LED string with smaller power loss.     A 9.2-ns to 1-ÎŒs digitally controlled multituned deadtime optimization for efficient GaN HEMT power converters

    ABSTRACT: This paper presents a tunable new deadtime control circuit providing an optimal delay for power converter optimization. Our method can reduce the deadtime loss while improving the efficiency and power density of a given power converter. The circuit presents a reconfigurable delay element to generate a wide range of deadtime for different power conversion applications with varying loads and input voltages. The optimal deadtime equation for buck converters is derived, and its dependency on the input voltage and load is discussed. Experimental results show that the presented circuit can provide a wide range of deadtime delays, ranging from 9.2 ns to 1000 ns. The power consumption of the presented circuit is measured for different capacitive loads (CL) and operating frequencies ( f s). The circuit consumed a power between 610 ”W and 850 ”W across the measured deadtime ranges while CL = 12 pF, Vdd = 3.3 V, and fs = 200 kHz. The proposed deadtime generator can operate up to 18 MHz when the minimum deadtime of 9.2 ns is selected. The presented circuit occupies an area of 150” m × 260”m. The fabricated chip is connected to a buck converter to validate the operation of the proposed circuit. The efficiency of a typical buck converter with minimum TDLH and optimal TDHL at ILoad = 25 mA is improved by 12% compared to a converter with a fixed deadtime of TDLH = TDHL = 12 ns
