    Specialized Hardware Support for Dynamic Storage Allocation

    With the advent of operating systems and programming languages that can evaluate and guarantee real-time specifications, applications with real-time requirements can be authored in higher-level languages. For example, a version of Java suitable for real-time (RTSJ) has recently reached the status of a reference implementation, and it is likely that other implementations will follow. Analysis to show the feasibility of a given set of tasks must take into account their worst-case execution time, including any storage allocation or deallocation associated with those tasks. In this thesis, we present a hardware-based solution to the problem of storage allocation and (explicit) deallocation for real-time applications. Our approach offers both predictable and low execution time: a storage allocation request can be satisfied in the time necessary to fetch one word from memory

    A Non-blocking Buddy System for Scalable Memory Allocation on Multi-core Machines

    Common implementations of core memory allocation components handle concurrent allocation/release requests by synchronizing threads via spin-locks. This approach is not prone to scale with large thread counts, a problem that has been addressed in the literature by introducing layered allocation services or replicating the core allocators - the bottom most ones within the layered architecture. Both these solutions tend to reduce the pressure of actual concurrent accesses to each individual core allocator. In this article we explore an alternative approach to scalability of memory allocation/release, which can be still combined with those literature proposals. We present a fully non-blocking buddy-system, that allows threads to proceed in parallel, and commit their allocations/releases unless a conflict is materialized while handling its metadata. Beyond improving scalability and performance it is resilient to performance degradation in face of concurrent accesses independently of the current level of fragmentation of the handled memory blocks

    Finite size scaling approach to dynamic storage allocation problem

    It is demonstrated how dynamic storage allocation algorithms can be analyzed in terms of finite size scaling. The method is illustrated in the three simple cases of the it first-fit, next-fit and it best-fit algorithms, and the system works at full capacity. The analysis is done from two different points of view - running speed and employed memory. In both cases, and for all algorithms, it is shown that a simple scaling function exists and the relevant exponents are calculated.
