STV-based Video Feature Processing for Action Recognition
In comparison to still image-based processes, video features can provide rich and intuitive information about dynamic events occurred over a period of time, such as human actions, crowd behaviours, and other subject pattern changes. Although substantial progresses have been made in the last decade on image processing and seen its successful applications in face matching and object recognition, video-based event detection still remains one of the most difficult challenges in computer vision research due to its complex continuous or discrete input signals, arbitrary dynamic feature definitions, and the often ambiguous analytical methods. In this paper, a Spatio-Temporal Volume (STV) and region intersection (RI) based 3D shape-matching method has been proposed to facilitate the definition and recognition of human actions recorded in videos. The distinctive characteristics and the performance gain of the devised approach stemmed from a coefficient factor-boosted 3D region intersection and matching mechanism developed in this research. This paper also reported the investigation into techniques for efficient STV data filtering to reduce the amount of voxels (volumetric-pixels) that need to be processed in each operational cycle in the implemented system. A Methodology for Extracting Human Bodies from Still Images
Monitoring and surveillance of humans is one of the most prominent applications of today and it is expected to be part of many future aspects of our life, for safety reasons, assisted living and many others. Many efforts have been made towards automatic and robust solutions, but the general problem is very challenging and remains still open. In this PhD dissertation we examine the problem from many perspectives. First, we study the performance of a hardware architecture designed for large-scale surveillance systems. Then, we focus on the general problem of human activity recognition, present an extensive survey of methodologies that deal with this subject and propose a maturity metric to evaluate them.
One of the numerous and most popular algorithms for image processing found in the field is image segmentation and we propose a blind metric to evaluate their results regarding the activity at local regions. Finally, we propose a fully automatic system for segmenting and extracting human bodies from challenging single images, which is the main contribution of the dissertation. Our methodology is a novel bottom-up approach relying mostly on anthropometric constraints and is facilitated by our research in the fields of face, skin and hands detection. Experimental results and comparison with state-of-the-art methodologies demonstrate the success of our approach
Material Measurement Units: Foundations Through a Survey
Long-term availability of minerals and industrial materials is a necessary
condition for sustainable development as they are the constituents of any
manufacturing product. In particular, technologies with increasing demand such
as GPUs and photovoltaic panels are made of critical raw materials. To enhance
the efficiency of material management, in this paper we make three main
contributions: first, we identify in the literature an emerging
computer-vision-enabled material monitoring technology which we call Material
Measurement Unit (MMU); second, we provide a survey of works relevant to the
development of MMUs; third, we describe a material stock monitoring sensor

User-centred video abstraction
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University LondonThe rapid growth of digital video content in recent years has imposed the need for the development of technologies with the capability to produce condensed but semantically rich versions of the input video stream in an effective manner. Consequently, the topic of Video Summarisation is becoming increasingly popular in multimedia community and numerous video abstraction approaches have been proposed accordingly. These recommended techniques can be divided into two major categories of automatic and semi-automatic in accordance with the required level of human intervention in summarisation process. The fully-automated methods mainly adopt the low-level visual, aural and textual features alongside the mathematical and statistical algorithms in furtherance to extract the most significant segments of original video. However, the effectiveness of this type of techniques is restricted by a number of factors such as domain-dependency, computational expenses and the inability to understand the semantics of videos from low-level features. The second category of techniques however, attempts to alleviate the quality of summaries by involving humans in the abstraction process to bridge the semantic gap. Nonetheless, a single user’s subjectivity and other external contributing factors such as distraction will potentially deteriorate the performance of this group of approaches. Accordingly, in this thesis we have focused on the development of three user-centred effective video summarisation techniques that could be applied to different video categories and generate satisfactory results. According to our first proposed approach, a novel mechanism for a user-centred video summarisation has been presented for the scenarios in which multiple actors are employed in the video summarisation process in order to minimise the negative effects of sole user adoption. Based on our recommended algorithm, the video frames were initially scored by a group of video annotators ‘on the fly’. This was followed by averaging these assigned scores in order to generate a singular saliency score for each video frame and, finally, the highest scored video frames alongside the corresponding audio and textual contents were extracted to be included into the final summary. The effectiveness of our approach has been assessed by comparing the video summaries generated based on our approach against the results obtained from three existing automatic summarisation tools that adopt different modalities for abstraction purposes. The experimental results indicated that our proposed method is capable of delivering remarkable outcomes in terms of Overall Satisfaction and Precision with an acceptable Recall rate, indicating the usefulness of involving user input in the video summarisation process. In an attempt to provide a better user experience, we have proposed our personalised video summarisation method with an ability to customise the generated summaries in accordance with the viewers’ preferences. Accordingly, the end-user’s priority levels towards different video scenes were captured and utilised for updating the average scores previously assigned by the video annotators. Finally, our earlier proposed summarisation method was adopted to extract the most significant audio-visual content of the video. Experimental results indicated the capability of this approach to deliver superior outcomes compared with our previously proposed method and the three other automatic summarisation tools. Finally, we have attempted to reduce the required level of audience involvement for personalisation purposes by proposing a new method for producing personalised video summaries. Accordingly, SIFT visual features were adopted to identify the video scenes’ semantic categories. Fusing this retrieved data with pre-built users’ profiles, personalised video abstracts can be created. Activity understanding and unusual event detection in surveillance videos
PhDComputer scientists have made ceaseless efforts to replicate cognitive video understanding abilities
of human brains onto autonomous vision systems. As video surveillance cameras become
ubiquitous, there is a surge in studies on automated activity understanding and unusual event detection
in surveillance videos. Nevertheless, video content analysis in public scenes remained a
formidable challenge due to intrinsic difficulties such as severe inter-object occlusion in crowded
scene and poor quality of recorded surveillance footage. Moreover, it is nontrivial to achieve
robust detection of unusual events, which are rare, ambiguous, and easily confused with noise.
This thesis proposes solutions for resolving ambiguous visual observations and overcoming unreliability
of conventional activity analysis methods by exploiting multi-camera visual context
and human feedback.
The thesis first demonstrates the importance of learning visual context for establishing reliable
reasoning on observed activity in a camera network. In the proposed approach, a new Cross
Canonical Correlation Analysis (xCCA) is formulated to discover and quantify time delayed pairwise
correlations of regional activities observed within and across multiple camera views. This
thesis shows that learning time delayed pairwise activity correlations offers valuable contextual
information for (1) spatial and temporal topology inference of a camera network, (2) robust person
re-identification, and (3) accurate activity-based video temporal segmentation. Crucially, in
contrast to conventional methods, the proposed approach does not rely on either intra-camera or
inter-camera object tracking; it can thus be applied to low-quality surveillance videos featuring
severe inter-object occlusions.
Second, to detect global unusual event across multiple disjoint cameras, this thesis extends
visual context learning from pairwise relationship to global time delayed dependency between
regional activities. Specifically, a Time Delayed Probabilistic Graphical Model (TD-PGM) is
proposed to model the multi-camera activities and their dependencies. Subtle global unusual
events are detected and localised using the model as context-incoherent patterns across multiple
camera views. In the model, different nodes represent activities in different decomposed re3
gions from different camera views, and the directed links between nodes encoding time delayed
dependencies between activities observed within and across camera views. In order to learn optimised
time delayed dependencies in a TD-PGM, a novel two-stage structure learning approach
is formulated by combining both constraint-based and scored-searching based structure learning
methods.
Third, to cope with visual context changes over time, this two-stage structure learning approach
is extended to permit tractable incremental update of both TD-PGM parameters and its
structure. As opposed to most existing studies that assume static model once learned, the proposed
incremental learning allows a model to adapt itself to reflect the changes in the current
visual context, such as subtle behaviour drift over time or removal/addition of cameras. Importantly,
the incremental structure learning is achieved without either exhaustive search in a large
graph structure space or storing all past observations in memory, making the proposed solution
memory and time efficient.
Forth, an active learning approach is presented to incorporate human feedback for on-line
unusual event detection. Contrary to most existing unsupervised methods that perform passive
mining for unusual events, the proposed approach automatically requests supervision for critical
points to resolve ambiguities of interest, leading to more robust detection of subtle unusual
events. The active learning strategy is formulated as a stream-based solution, i.e. it makes decision
on-the-fly on whether to request label for each unlabelled sample observed in sequence.
It selects adaptively two active learning criteria, namely likelihood criterion and uncertainty criterion
to achieve (1) discovery of unknown event classes and (2) refinement of classification
boundary.
The effectiveness of the proposed approaches is validated using videos captured from busy
public scenes such as underground stations and traffic intersections
Vision-based deep execution monitoring
Execution monitor of high-level robot actions can be effectively improved by
visual monitoring the state of the world in terms of preconditions and
postconditions that hold before and after the execution of an action.
Furthermore a policy for searching where to look at, either for verifying the
relations that specify the pre and postconditions or to refocus in case of a
failure, can tremendously improve the robot execution in an uncharted
environment. It is now possible to strongly rely on visual perception in order
to make the assumption that the environment is observable, by the amazing
results of deep learning. In this work we present visual execution monitoring
for a robot executing tasks in an uncharted Lab environment. The execution
monitor interacts with the environment via a visual stream that uses two DCNN
for recognizing the objects the robot has to deal with and manipulate, and a
non-parametric Bayes estimation to discover the relations out of the DCNN
features. To recover from lack of focus and failures due to missed objects we
resort to visual search policies via deep reinforcement learning
Understanding High Resolution Aerial Imagery Using Computer Vision Techniques
Computer vision can make important contributions to the analysis of remote sensing satellite or aerial imagery. However, the resolution of early satellite imagery was not sufficient to provide useful spatial features. The situation is changing with the advent of very-high-spatial-resolution (VHR) imaging sensors. This change makes it possible to use computer vision techniques to perform analysis of man-made structures. Meanwhile, the development of multi-view imaging techniques allows the generation of accurate point clouds as ancillary knowledge.
This dissertation aims at developing computer vision and machine learning algorithms for high resolution aerial imagery analysis in the context of application problems including debris detection, building detection and roof condition assessment. High resolution aerial imagery and point clouds were provided by Pictometry International for this study.
Debris detection after natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes or tsunamis, is needed for effective debris removal and allocation of limited resources. Significant advances in aerial image acquisition have greatly enabled the possibilities for rapid and automated detection of debris. In this dissertation, a robust debris detection algorithm is proposed. Large scale aerial images are partitioned into homogeneous regions by interactive segmentation. Debris areas are identified based on extracted texture features.
Robust building detection is another important part of high resolution aerial imagery understanding. This dissertation develops a 3D scene classification algorithm for building detection using point clouds derived from multi-view imagery. Point clouds are divided into point clusters using Euclidean clustering. Individual point clusters are identified based on extracted spectral and 3D structural features.
The inspection of roof condition is an important step in damage claim processing in the insurance industry. Automated roof condition assessment from remotely sensed images is proposed in this dissertation. Initially, texture classification and a bag-of-words model were applied to assess the roof condition using features derived from the whole rooftop. However, considering the complexity of residential rooftop, a more sophisticated method is proposed to divide the task into two stages: 1) roof segmentation, followed by 2) classification of segmented roof regions. Deep learning techniques are investigated for both segmentation and classification. A deep learned feature is proposed and applied in a region merging segmentation algorithm. A fine-tuned deep network is adopted for roof segment classification and found to achieve higher accuracy than traditional methods using hand-crafted features.
Contributions of this study include the development of algorithms for debris detection using 2D images and building detection using 3D point clouds. For roof condition assessment, the solutions to this problem are explored in two directions: features derived from the whole rooftop and features extracted from each roof segments. Through our research, roof segmentation followed by segments classification was found to be a more promising method and the workflow processing developed and tested. Deep learning techniques are also investigated for both roof segmentation and segments classification. More unsupervised feature extraction techniques using deep learning can be explored in future work
