An Unsupervised Method for Estimating the Global Horizontal Irradiance from Photovoltaic Power Measurements
In this paper, we present a method to determine the global horizontal
irradiance (GHI) from the power measurements of one or more PV systems, located
in the same neighborhood. The method is completely unsupervised and is based on
a physical model of a PV plant. The precise assessment of solar irradiance is
pivotal for the forecast of the electric power generated by photovoltaic (PV)
plants. However, on-ground measurements are expensive and are generally not
performed for small and medium-sized PV plants. Satellite-based services
represent a valid alternative to on site measurements, but their space-time
resolution is limited. Results from two case studies located in Switzerland are
presented. The performance of the proposed method at assessing GHI is compared
with that of free and commercial satellite services. Our results show that the
presented method is generally better than satellite-based services, especially
at high temporal resolutions
Linear Control Theory with an ℋ∞ Optimality Criterion
This expository paper sets out the principal results in ℋ∞ control theory in the context of continuous-time linear systems. The focus is on the mathematical theory rather than computational methods
Multivariable proportional-integral-plus (PIP) control of the ALSTOM nonlinear gasifier simulation
Multivariable proportional-integral-plus (PIP) control methods are applied to the nonlinear ALSTOM Benchmark Challenge II. The approach utilises a data-based combined model reduction and linearisation step, which plays an essential role in satisfying the design specifications. The discrete-time transfer function models obtained in this manner are represented in a non-minimum state space form suitable for PIP control system design. Here, full state variable feedback control can be implemented directly from the measured input and output signals of the controlled process, without resorting to the design and implementation of a deterministic state reconstructor or a stochastic Kalman filter. Furthermore, the non-minimal formulation provides more design freedom than the equivalent minimal case, a characteristic that proves particularly useful in tuning the algorithm to meet the Benchmark specifications. The latter requirements are comfortably met for all three operating conditions by using a straightforward to implement, fixed gain, linear PIP algorithm
Kuhn-Tucker-based stability conditions for systems with saturation
This paper presents a new approach to deriving stability conditions for continuous-time linear systems interconnected with a saturation. The method presented can be extended to handle a dead-zone, or in general, nonlinearities in the form of piecewise linear functions. By representing the saturation as a constrained optimization problem, the necessary (Kuhn-Tucker) conditions for optimality are used to derive linear and quadratic constraints which characterize the saturation. After selecting a candidate Lyapunov function, we pose the question of whether the Lyapunov function is decreasing along trajectories of the system as an implication between the necessary conditions derived from the saturation optimization, and the time derivative of the Lyapunov function. This leads to stability conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities, which are obtained by an application of the S-procedure to the implication. An example is provided where the proposed technique is compared and contrasted with previous analysis methods
