Managed information gathering and fusion for transient transport problems
This paper deals with vehicular traffic management by communication technologies from Traffic Control Center point of view in road networks. The global goal is to manage the urban traffic by road traffic operations, controlling and interventional possibilities in order to minimize the traffic delays and stops and to improve traffic safety on the roads. This paper focuses on transient transport, when the controlling management is crucial. The aim was to detect the beginning time of the transient traffic on the roads, to gather the most appropriate data and to get reliable information for interventional suggestions. More reliable information can be created by information fusion, several fusion techniques are expounded in this paper. A half-automatic solution with Decision Support System has been developed to help with engineers in suggestions of interventions based on real time traffic data. The information fusion has benefits for Decision Support System: the complementary sensors may fill the gaps of one another, the system is able to detect the changing of the percentage of different vehicle types in traffic. An example of detection and interventional suggestion about transient traffic on transport networks of a little town is presented at the end of the paper. HOG, LBP and SVM based Traffic Density Estimation at Intersection
Increased amount of vehicular traffic on roads is a significant issue. High
amount of vehicular traffic creates traffic congestion, unwanted delays,
pollution, money loss, health issues, accidents, emergency vehicle passage and
traffic violations that ends up in the decline in productivity. In peak hours,
the issues become even worse. Traditional traffic management and control
systems fail to tackle this problem. Currently, the traffic lights at
intersections aren't adaptive and have fixed time delays. There's a necessity
of an optimized and sensible control system which would enhance the efficiency
of traffic flow. Smart traffic systems perform estimation of traffic density
and create the traffic lights modification consistent with the quantity of
traffic. We tend to propose an efficient way to estimate the traffic density on
intersection using image processing and machine learning techniques in real
time. The proposed methodology takes pictures of traffic at junction to
estimate the traffic density. We use Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG),
Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) based approach for
traffic density estimation. The strategy is computationally inexpensive and can
run efficiently on raspberry pi board. Code is released at

VANET Applications: Hot Use Cases
Current challenges of car manufacturers are to make roads safe, to achieve
free flowing traffic with few congestions, and to reduce pollution by an
effective fuel use. To reach these goals, many improvements are performed
in-car, but more and more approaches rely on connected cars with communication
capabilities between cars, with an infrastructure, or with IoT devices.
Monitoring and coordinating vehicles allow then to compute intelligent ways of
transportation. Connected cars have introduced a new way of thinking cars - not
only as a mean for a driver to go from A to B, but as smart cars - a user
extension like the smartphone today. In this report, we introduce concepts and
specific vocabulary in order to classify current innovations or ideas on the
emerging topic of smart car. We present a graphical categorization showing this
evolution in function of the societal evolution. Different perspectives are
adopted: a vehicle-centric view, a vehicle-network view, and a user-centric
view; described by simple and complex use-cases and illustrated by a list of
emerging and current projects from the academic and industrial worlds. We
identified an empty space in innovation between the user and his car:
paradoxically even if they are both in interaction, they are separated through
different application uses. Future challenge is to interlace social concerns of
the user within an intelligent and efficient driving
Dynamic Arrival Rate Estimation for Campus Mobility on Demand Network Graphs
Mobility On Demand (MOD) systems are revolutionizing transportation in urban
settings by improving vehicle utilization and reducing parking congestion. A
key factor in the success of an MOD system is the ability to measure and
respond to real-time customer arrival data. Real time traffic arrival rate data
is traditionally difficult to obtain due to the need to install fixed sensors
throughout the MOD network. This paper presents a framework for measuring
pedestrian traffic arrival rates using sensors onboard the vehicles that make
up the MOD fleet. A novel distributed fusion algorithm is presented which
combines onboard LIDAR and camera sensor measurements to detect trajectories of
pedestrians with a 90% detection hit rate with 1.5 false positives per minute.
A novel moving observer method is introduced to estimate pedestrian arrival
rates from pedestrian trajectories collected from mobile sensors. The moving
observer method is evaluated in both simulation and hardware and is shown to
achieve arrival rate estimates comparable to those that would be obtained with

DSRC â NEW PRINCIPLES AND IMPLEMENTATIONS IN ITS ROMANIA
Cities around the world are suffering from severe traffic congestion resulting in economic losses via delayed time, fuel consumption, traffic accidents, air pollution and traffic noise. An efficient wireless technology used in the road-to-vehicle radio communication can help reducing this negative effects and improve traffic parameters. Active DSRC is one of the most reliable road-to-vehicle communication methods available in the market today, since it has wide communication area and high-speed communication and is the most suitable for non-stop toll collection system, especially for multi-lane free-flow toll collection system, where vehicles can pass the toll gantry without reducing speed. The Active DSRC also supports other ITS applications related to road-to-vehicle communication applications that need high speed communication, and can improve public transportation, help to reduce air pollution, NOx and CO2, and road noise via a decline in traffic.ITS
Real-Time Illegal Parking Detection System Based on Deep Learning
The increasing illegal parking has become more and more serious. Nowadays the
methods of detecting illegally parked vehicles are based on background
segmentation. However, this method is weakly robust and sensitive to
environment. Benefitting from deep learning, this paper proposes a novel
illegal vehicle parking detection system. Illegal vehicles captured by camera
are firstly located and classified by the famous Single Shot MultiBox Detector
(SSD) algorithm. To improve the performance, we propose to optimize SSD by
adjusting the aspect ratio of default box to accommodate with our dataset
better. After that, a tracking and analysis of movement is adopted to judge the
illegal vehicles in the region of interest (ROI). Experiments show that the
system can achieve a 99% accuracy and real-time (25FPS) detection with strong
robustness in complex environments.Comment: 5pages,6figure
Autonomous real-time surveillance system with distributed IP cameras
An autonomous Internet Protocol (IP) camera based object tracking and behaviour identification system, capable of running in real-time on an embedded system with limited memory and processing power is presented in this paper. The main contribution of this work is the integration of processor intensive image processing algorithms on an embedded platform capable of running at real-time for monitoring the behaviour of pedestrians. The Algorithm Based Object Recognition and Tracking (ABORAT) system architecture presented here was developed on an Intel PXA270-based development board clocked at 520 MHz. The platform was connected to a commercial stationary IP-based camera in a remote monitoring station for intelligent image
processing. The system is capable of detecting moving objects and their shadows in a complex environment with varying lighting intensity and moving foliage. Objects
moving close to each other are also detected to extract their trajectories which are then fed into an unsupervised neural network for autonomous classification. The novel intelligent video system presented is also capable of performing simple analytic functions such as tracking and generating alerts when objects enter/leave regions or cross tripwires superimposed on live video by the operator
