    On Traffic Situation Predictions for Automated Driving of Long Vehicle Combinations

    The introduction of longer vehicle combinations for road transports than are currently allowed is an important viable option for achieving the environmental goals on transported goods in Sweden and Europe by the year 2030. This thesis addresses how driver assistance functionality for high-speed manoeuvring can be designed and realized for prospective long vehicle combinations. The main focus is the derivation and usage of traffic situation predictions in order to provide driver support functionalities with a high driver acceptance. The traffic situation predictions are of a tactical character and include a time horizon of up to 10 s. Data collection of manual and automated driving with an A-double combination was carried out in a moving-base driving simulator. The driving scenario was comprised of a relatively curvy and hilly single-lane Swedish county road (180). The driving trajectories were analysed and complemented with results from optimization. Based on observations of utilized accelerations it was proposed that the combined steering and braking should prioritize a smooth and comfortable driving experience. It was hypothesized that high driver acceptance of driver assistance functionality including automated steering and propulsion/braking, can be realized by utilizing driver models inspired by human cognition as an integrated part in the generation of traffic situation predictions. A longitudinal and lateral driver model based on optic information was proposed for lane-change manoeuvring. The driver model was implemented in a real-time framework for automated driving of an A-double combination on a multiple lane one-way road. Simulations showed that the framework gave reasonable results for maintain lane and lane change manoeuvres at constant and varying longitudinal velocities

    To use highly automated vehicles while a driver remains responsible for safe driving, places new – yet demanding, requirements on the human operator. This is because the automation creates a gap between drivers’ responsibility and the human capabilities to take responsibility, especially for unexpected or time-critical transitions of control. This gap is not being addressed by current practises of driver licensing. Based on literature review, this research collects drivers’ requirements to enable safe transitions in control attuned to human capabilities. This knowledge is intended to help system developers and authorities to identify the requirements on human operators to (re)take responsibility for safe driving after automation

    Effect of cognitive load on drivers’ State and task performance during automated driving: Introducing a novel method for determining stabilisation time following take-over of control

    This research paper explores the impact of cognitive load on drivers’ physiological state and driving performance during an automated driving to manual control transition scenario, using a driving simulator. Whilst driving in the automated mode, cognitive load was manipulated using the “N-Back” task, which participants engaged with via a visual display. Results suggest that non-optimal levels of workload during the automated driving conditions impair driving performance, especially lateral control of the vehicle, and the magnitude of this impairment varied with increasing cognitive load. In addition to these findings, the present paper introduces a novel method for determining stabilisation times of both driver state and driving performance indicators following a transition of vehicle control. Using this method we demonstrate that mean and standard deviation of lane position impairments were found to take longer to stabilise following transition to manual driving following a higher level of cognitive load during the automated driving period, taking up to 22 s for driving performance to normalise after take-over. In addition, heart rate parameters take between 20 and 30 s to stabilise following a planned take-over request. Finally, this paper demonstrates how the magnitude of cognitive load can be estimated in context of automated driving using physiological measures, captured by consumer electronic devices. We discuss the impact our findings have on the design of SAE Level 3 systems. Relevant suggestions are provided to the research community and automakers working on future implementation of vehicles capable of conditional automation

    Impact of Regular and Narrow AV-Exclusive Lanes on Manual Driver Behavior

    This study attempts to answer the question of how a narrow (9-ft) lane dedicated to Automated Vehicles (AVs) would affect the behavior of drivers in the adjacent lane to the right. To this end, a custom driving simulator environment was designed mimicking the Interstate 15 smart corridor in San Diego. A group of participants was assigned to drive next to the simulated 9-ft narrow lane while a control group was assigned to drive next to a regular 12-ft AV lane. Driver behavior was analyzed by measuring the mean lane position, mean speed, and mental effort (self-reported/subjective measure). In addition to AV lane width, the experimental design took into consideration AV headway, gender, and right lane traffic to investigate possible interaction effects. The results showed no significant differences in the speed and mental effort of drivers while indicating significant differences in lane positioning. Although the overall effect of AV lane width was not significant, there were some significant interaction effects between lane width and other factors (i.e., driver gender and presence of traffic on the next regular lane to the right). Across all the significant interactions, there was no case in which those factors stayed constant while AV lane width changed between the groups, indicating that the significant difference stemmed from the other factors rather than the lane width. However, the trend observed was that drivers driving next to the 12-ft lane had better lane centering compared to the 9ft lane. The analysis also showed that while in general female drivers tended to drive further away from the 9-ft lane and performed worse in terms of lane centering, they performed better than male drivers when right-lane traffic was present. This study contributes to understanding the behavioral impacts of infrastructure adaptation to AVs on non-AV drivers
