Cooperative Symbol-Based Signaling for Networks with Multiple Relays
Wireless channels suffer from severe inherent impairments and hence
reliable and high data rate wireless transmission is particularly challenging to
achieve. Fortunately, using multiple antennae improves performance in wireless
transmission by providing space diversity, spatial multiplexing, and power gains.
However, in wireless ad-hoc networks multiple antennae may not be acceptable
due to limitations in size, cost, and hardware complexity. As a result, cooperative
relaying strategies have attracted considerable attention because of their abilities
to take advantage of multi-antenna by using multiple single-antenna relays.
This study is to explore cooperative signaling for different relay networks,
such as multi-hop relay networks formed by multiple single-antenna relays and
multi-stage relay networks formed by multiple relaying stages with each stage
holding several single-antenna relays. The main contribution of this study is the
development of a new relaying scheme for networks using symbol-level
modulation, such as binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase shift
keying (QPSK). We also analyze effects of this newly developed scheme when it
is used with space-time coding in a multi-stage relay network. Simulation results
demonstrate that the new scheme outperforms previously proposed schemes:
amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme and decode-and-forward (DF) scheme
Selective Combining for Hybrid Cooperative Networks
In this study, we consider the selective combining in hybrid cooperative
networks (SCHCNs scheme) with one source node, one destination node and
relay nodes. In the SCHCN scheme, each relay first adaptively chooses between
amplify-and-forward protocol and decode-and-forward protocol on a per frame
basis by examining the error-detecting code result, and () relays will be selected to forward their received signals to the
destination. We first develop a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold-based
frame error rate (FER) approximation model. Then, the theoretical FER
expressions for the SCHCN scheme are derived by utilizing the proposed SNR
threshold-based FER approximation model. The analytical FER expressions are
validated through simulation results.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, IET Communications, 201
Optimal Coding Functions for Pairwise Message Sharing on Finite-Field Multi-Way Relay Channels
This paper considers the finite-field multi-way relay channel with pairwise
message sharing, where multiple users exchange messages through a single relay
and where the users may share parts of their source messages (meaning that some
message parts are known/common to more than one user). In this paper, we design
an optimal functional-decode-forward coding scheme that takes the shared
messages into account. More specifically, we design an optimal function for the
relay to decode (from the users on the uplink) and forward (back to the users
on the downlink). We then show that this proposed function-decode-forward
coding scheme can achieve the capacity region of the finite-field multi-way
relay channel with pairwise message sharing. This paper generalizes our
previous result for the case of three users to any number of users.Comment: Author's final version (accepted for presentation at the 2014 IEEE

Memoryless Relay Strategies for Two-Way Relay Channels: Performance Analysis and Optimization
We consider relaying strategies for two-way relay channels, where two terminals transmits simultaneously to each other with the help of relays. A memoryless system is considered, where the signal transmitted by a relay depends only on its last received signal. For binary antipodal signaling, we analyze and optimize the performance of existing amplify and forward (AF) and absolute (abs) decode and forward (ADF) for two- way AWGN relay channels. A new abs-based AF (AAF) scheme is proposed, which has better performance than AF. In low SNR, AAF performs even better than ADF. Furthermore, a novel estimate and forward (EF) strategy is proposed which performs better than ADF. More importantly, we optimize the relay strategy within the class of abs-based strategies via functional analysis, which minimizes the average probability of error over all possible relay functions. The optimized function is shown to be a Lambert's W function parameterized on the noise power and the transmission energy. The optimized function behaves like AAF in low SNR and like ADF in high SNR, resp., where EF behaves like the optimized function over the whole SNR range
Multi-Antenna Assisted Virtual Full-Duplex Relaying with Reliability-Aware Iterative Decoding
In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying
with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to
improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two
half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as
transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the
decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with
QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative
detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate
inter-frame interference and error propagation effect at the same time.
Simulation results show that, without extra cost of time delay and signalling
overhead, our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional selective
decode-and-forward (S-DF) relaying schemes, such as cyclic redundancy check
based S-DF relaying and threshold based S-DF relaying, by up to 8 dB in terms
of bit-error-rate.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, conference paper has been submitte
Cellular Systems with Full-Duplex Compress-and-Forward Relaying and Cooperative Base Stations
In this paper the advantages provided by multicell processing of signals
transmitted by mobile terminals (MTs) which are received via dedicated relay
terminals (RTs) are studied. It is assumed that each RT is capable of
full-duplex operation and receives the transmission of adjacent relay
terminals. Focusing on intra-cell TDMA and non-fading channels, a simplified
relay-aided uplink cellular model based on a model introduced by Wyner is
considered. Assuming a nomadic application in which the RTs are oblivious to
the MTs' codebooks, a form of distributed compress-and-forward (CF) scheme with
decoder side information is employed. The per-cell sum-rate of the CF scheme is
derived and is given as a solution of a simple fixed point equation. This
achievable rate reveals that the CF scheme is able to completely eliminate the
inter-relay interference, and it approaches a ``cut-set-like'' upper bound for
strong RTs transmission power. The CF rate is also shown to surpass the rate of
an amplify-and-forward scheme via numerical calculations for a wide range of
the system parameters.Comment: Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE International Symposium on Information

Joint Relay Selection and Power Allocation in Large-Scale MIMO Systems with Untrusted Relays and Passive Eavesdroppers
In this paper, a joint relay selection and power allocation (JRP) scheme is
proposed to enhance the physical layer security of a cooperative network, where
a multiple antennas source communicates with a single-antenna destination in
presence of untrusted relays and passive eavesdroppers (Eves). The objective is
to protect the data confidentially while concurrently relying on the untrusted
relays as potential Eves to improve both the security and reliability of the
network. To realize this objective, we consider cooperative jamming performed
by the destination while JRP scheme is implemented. With the aim of maximizing
the instantaneous secrecy rate, we derive a new closed-form solution for the
optimal power allocation and propose a simple relay selection criterion under
two scenarios of non-colluding Eves (NCE) and colluding Eves (CE). For the
proposed scheme, a new closed-form expression is derived for the ergodic
secrecy rate (ESR) and the secrecy outage probability as security metrics, and
a new closed-form expression is presented for the average symbol error rate
(SER) as a reliability measure over Rayleigh fading channels. We further
explicitly characterize the high signal-to-noise ratio slope and power offset
of the ESR to highlight the impacts of system parameters on the ESR. In
addition, we examine the diversity order of the proposed scheme to reveal the
achievable secrecy performance advantage. Finally, the secrecy and reliability
diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the optimized network are provided.
Numerical results highlight that the ESR performance of the proposed JRP scheme
for NCE and CE cases is increased with respect to the number of untrustworthy
relays.Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and

Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
