A component-based product line architecture for workflow management systems
This paper presents a component-based product line for workflow management systems. The process followed to design the product line was based on the Catalysis method. Extensions were made to represent variability across the process. The domain of workflow management systems has been shown to be appropriate to the application of the product line approach as there are a standard architecture and models established by a regulatory board, the Workflow Management Coalition. In addition, there is a demand for similar workflow management systems but with some different features. The product line architecture was evaluated with Rapide simulation tools. The evaluation was based on selected scenarios, thus, avoiding implementation issues. The strategy that has been used to populate the architecture and experiment with the product line is shown. In particular, the design of the workflow execution manager component is described
ADEPT2 - Next Generation Process Management Technology
If current process management systems shall be applied to a broad spectrum of applications, they will have to be significantly improved with respect to their technological capabilities. In particular, in dynamic environments it must be possible to quickly implement and deploy new processes, to enable ad-hoc modifications of single process instances at runtime (e.g., to add, delete or shift process steps), and to support process schema evolution with instance migration, i.e., to propagate process schema changes to already running instances. These requirements must be met without affecting process consistency and by preserving the robustness of the process management system. In this paper we describe how these challenges have been addressed and solved in the ADEPT2 Process Management System. Our overall vision is to provide a next generation process management technology which can be used in a variety of application domains
AMP: A Science-driven Web-based Application for the TeraGrid
The Asteroseismic Modeling Portal (AMP) provides a web-based interface for
astronomers to run and view simulations that derive the properties of Sun-like
stars from observations of their pulsation frequencies. In this paper, we
describe the architecture and implementation of AMP, highlighting the
lightweight design principles and tools used to produce a functional
fully-custom web-based science application in less than a year. Targeted as a
TeraGrid science gateway, AMP's architecture and implementation are intended to
simplify its orchestration of TeraGrid computational resources. AMP's web-based
interface was developed as a traditional standalone database-backed web
application using the Python-based Django web development framework, allowing
us to leverage the Django framework's capabilities while cleanly separating the
user interface development from the grid interface development. We have found
this combination of tools flexible and effective for rapid gateway development

Identifying and Modelling Complex Workflow Requirements in Web Applications
Workflow plays a major role in nowadays business and therefore its
requirement elicitation must be accurate and clear for achieving the solution
closest to business’s needs. Due to Web applications popularity, the Web is becoming
the standard platform for implementing business workflows. In this
context, Web applications and their workflows must be adapted to market demands
in such a way that time and effort are minimize. As they get more popular,
they must give support to different functional requirements but also they
contain tangled and scattered behaviour. In this work we present a model-driven
approach for modelling workflows using a Domain Specific Language for Web
application requirement called WebSpec. We present an extension to WebSpec
based on Pattern Specifications for modelling crosscutting workflow requirements
identifying tangled and scattered behaviour and reducing inconsistencies
early in the cycle
A Typology of Virtual Teams: Implications for Effective Leadership
As the nature of work in today\u27s organizations becomes more complex, dynamic, and global, there has been an increasing emphasis on far-flung, distributed, virtual teams as organizing units of work. Despite their growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of work unit. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical framework to focus research toward understanding virtual teams and, in particular, to identify implications for effective leadership. Specifically, we focus on delineating the dimensions of a typology to characterize different types of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams to identify where current knowledge applies and new research needs to be developed. Second, we distinguish among different types of virtual teams, considering the critical role of task complexity in determining the underlying characteristics of virtual teams and leadership challenges the different types entail. Propositions addressing leadership implications for the effective management of virtual teams are proposed and discussed
Specification of high-level application programming interfaces (SemSorGrid4Env)
This document defines an Application Tier for the SemsorGrid4Env project. Within the Application Tier we distinguish between Web Applications - which provide a User Interface atop a more traditional Service Oriented Architecture - and Mashups which are driven by a REST API and a Resource Oriented Architecture. A pragmatic boundary is set to enable initial development of Web Applications and Mashups; as the project progresses an evaluation and comparison of the two paradigms may lead to a reassessment of where each can be applied within the project, with the experience gained providing a basis for general guidelines and best practice. Both Web Applications and Mashups are designed and delivered through an iterative user-centric process; requirements generated by the project case studies are a key element of this approach
