Features for Killer Apps from a Semantic Web Perspective
There are certain features that that distinguish killer apps from other ordinary applications. This chapter examines those features in the context of the semantic web, in the hope that a better understanding of the characteristics of killer apps might encourage their consideration when developing semantic web applications. Killer apps are highly tranformative technologies that create new e-commerce venues and widespread patterns of behaviour. Information technology, generally, and the Web, in particular, have benefited from killer apps to create new networks of users and increase its value. The semantic web community on the other hand is still awaiting a killer app that proves the superiority of its technologies. The authors hope that this chapter will help to highlight some of the common ingredients of killer apps in e-commerce, and discuss how such applications might emerge in the semantic web

With the advance of Web Services technologies and the emergence of Web
Services into the information space, tremendous opportunities for empowering
users and organizations appear in various application domains including
electronic commerce, travel, intelligence information gathering and analysis,
health care, digital government, etc. In fact, Web services appear to be s
solution for integrating distributed, autonomous and heterogeneous information
sources. However, as Web services evolve in a dynamic environment which is the
Internet many changes can occur and affect them. A Web service is affected when
one or more of its associated information sources is affected by schema
changes. Changes can alter the information sources contents but also their
schemas which may render Web services partially or totally undefined. In this
paper, we propose a solution for integrating information sources into Web
services. Then we tackle the Web service synchronization problem by
substituting the affected information sources. Our work is illustrated with a

What can be done with the Semantic Web? An overview of Watson-based applications
Thanks to the huge efforts deployed in the community for creating, building and generating semantic information for the Semantic Web, large amounts of machine processable knowledge are now openly available. Watson is an infrastructure component for the Semantic Web, a gateway that provides the necessary functions to support applications in using the Semantic Web. Live Social Semantics
Social interactions are one of the key factors to the success of conferences and similar community gatherings. This paper describes a novel application that integrates data from the semantic web, online social networks, and a real-world contact sensing platform. This application was successfully deployed at ESWC09, and actively used by 139 people. Personal profiles of the participants were automatically generated using several Web~2.0 systems and semantic academic data sources, and integrated in real-time with face-to-face contact networks derived from wearable sensors. Integration of all these heterogeneous data layers made it possible to offer various services to conference attendees to enhance their social experience such as visualisation of contact data, and a site to explore and connect with other participants. This paper describes the architecture of the application, the services we provided, and the results we achieved in this deployment
A schema-based P2P network to enable publish-subscribe for multimedia content in open hypermedia systems
Open Hypermedia Systems (OHS) aim to provide efficient dissemination, adaptation and integration of hyperlinked multimedia resources. Content available in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks could add significant value to OHS provided that challenges for efficient discovery and prompt delivery of rich and up-to-date content are successfully addressed. This paper proposes an architecture that enables the operation of OHS over a P2P overlay network of OHS servers based on semantic annotation of (a) peer OHS servers and of (b) multimedia resources that can be obtained through the link services of the OHS. The architecture provides efficient resource discovery. Semantic query-based subscriptions over this P2P network can enable access to up-to-date content, while caching at certain peers enables prompt delivery of multimedia content. Advanced query resolution techniques are employed to match different parts of subscription queries (subqueries). These subscriptions can be shared among different interested peers, thus increasing the efficiency of multimedia content dissemination
Developing Ontology Support for Human Malaria Control Initiatives
Malaria is one of the most common infectious diseases and an enormous public health problem in Sub-Sahara Africa, Asia and parts of America. In this paper, we discuss the development of the Human Malaria Control Ontology (HMCO) which contains general information on Malaria and epidemiological information that can help in the formulation of effective malaria control policies. The HMCO is aimed at providing interoperability support for the knowledge management of malaria control initiatives, and serve as an open semantic web infrastructure for malaria research and treatment
