Seeing Tree Structure from Vibration
Humans recognize object structure from both their appearance and motion;
often, motion helps to resolve ambiguities in object structure that arise when
we observe object appearance only. There are particular scenarios, however,
where neither appearance nor spatial-temporal motion signals are informative:
occluding twigs may look connected and have almost identical movements, though
they belong to different, possibly disconnected branches. We propose to tackle
this problem through spectrum analysis of motion signals, because vibrations of
disconnected branches, though visually similar, often have distinctive natural
frequencies. We propose a novel formulation of tree structure based on a
physics-based link model, and validate its effectiveness by theoretical
analysis, numerical simulation, and empirical experiments. With this
formulation, we use nonparametric Bayesian inference to reconstruct tree
structure from both spectral vibration signals and appearance cues. Our model
performs well in recognizing hierarchical tree structure from real-world videos

Japanese/English Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Exploration of Query Translation and Transliteration
Cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), where queries and documents are
in different languages, has of late become one of the major topics within the
information retrieval community. This paper proposes a Japanese/English CLIR
system, where we combine a query translation and retrieval modules. We
currently target the retrieval of technical documents, and therefore the
performance of our system is highly dependent on the quality of the translation
of technical terms. However, the technical term translation is still
problematic in that technical terms are often compound words, and thus new
terms are progressively created by combining existing base words. In addition,
Japanese often represents loanwords based on its special phonogram.
Consequently, existing dictionaries find it difficult to achieve sufficient
coverage. To counter the first problem, we produce a Japanese/English
dictionary for base words, and translate compound words on a word-by-word
basis. We also use a probabilistic method to resolve translation ambiguity. For
the second problem, we use a transliteration method, which corresponds words
unlisted in the base word dictionary to their phonetic equivalents in the
target language. We evaluate our system using a test collection for CLIR, and
show that both the compound word translation and transliteration methods
improve the system performance
Parsing Thai Social Data: A New Challenge for Thai NLP
Dependency parsing (DP) is a task that analyzes text for syntactic structure
and relationship between words. DP is widely used to improve natural language
processing (NLP) applications in many languages such as English. Previous works
on DP are generally applicable to formally written languages. However, they do
not apply to informal languages such as the ones used in social networks.
Therefore, DP has to be researched and explored with such social network data.
In this paper, we explore and identify a DP model that is suitable for Thai
social network data. After that, we will identify the appropriate linguistic
unit as an input. The result showed that, the transition based model called,
