    DESIGNING PERSUASIVE SYSTEMS FOR USER ENGAGEMENT IN COLLABORATIVE INTERACTION

    Social influnce concepts have great potential to positively affect the behaviors and attitudes of individuals. Drawing on socio-psychological theories, this study explores how social influnce design principles alter user engagement in collaborative interaction during public events. Based on a theory-driven research model, a persuasive information system comprising social influnce design principles of cooperation, social learning, and social facilitation was implemented and examined with a sample of 101 participants. The results reveal interactions between the design principles and their capacity to explain the persuasiveness of the system, which further substantially predicts the actual engagement of participants in collaborative interaction and their intention to use such systems in the future. Both cooperation and social learning are significantly correlated to perceived persuasiveness, and the cooperation also noticeably moderates the effect of social facilitation on social learning. These findings are potentially instrumental in achieving a richer understanding of how best to further harness social influnce for enhanced user engagement through novel socio-technical environments and for the future development of persuasive systems

    S.O.C.I.A.L. - Emergent Enterprise Social Networking Use Cases: A Multi Case Study Comparison

    Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) is a relatively new phenomenon. It refers to the application of Internet platforms for relationship building and short message exchanges in the context of workplace communication. While a number of case studies have provided evidence of its usefulness, a more comprehensive and structured overview of ESN is needed. In this study we carry out a cross-case comparison of five indepth ESN case studies that have elicited use practices using genre analysis. A comparison of these case results allows us to derive a comprehensive catalogue of ESN use cases that demonstrates the versatility of ESN. Our study has two main contributions. Firstly, we present a use case catalogue in a structured and accessible form, which we term the S.O.C.I.A.L. framework. The framework provides an overview of ESN that is useful for decision-makers who want to guide the rollout and adoption in their organisation. Secondly, in part to caution against the use of the framework as a blueprint or recipe, we demonstrate the contextual nature of ESN by way of different contextual profiles of ESN in teams, projects and large enterprises. Our study provides a stepping-stone for future ESN research, since the S.O.C.I.A.L. framework provides a more refined understanding of ESN as both a broad and contextual phenomenon

    Posters versus Lurkers: Improving Participation in Enterprise Social Networks through Promotional Messages

    Enterprise social networks (ESNs) often fail if there are few or no contributors of content. Promotional messages are among the common interventions used to improve participation. While most users only read others’ content (i.e. lurk), contributors who create content (i.e. post) account for only 1% of the users. Research on interventions to improve participation across dissimilar groups is scarce especially in work settings. We develop a model that examines four key motivations of posting and lurking. We employ the elaboration likelihood model to understand how promotional messages influence lurkers’ and posters’ beliefs and participation. We test our model with data collected from 366 members in two corporate Google? communities in a large Australian retail organization. We find that posters and lurkers are motivated and hindered by different factors. Promotional messages do not – always – yield the hoped-for results among lurkers; however, they do make posters more enthusiastic to participate

    Microblogging in the workplace as a functionality of Enterprise Social Networking (ESN) platforms is a relatively new phenomenon of which the use in knowledge work has not yet received much attention from research. In this cross-sectional study, I attempt to shed light on the role of microblogging in knowledge work. I identify microblogging use practices of knowledge workers on ESN platforms, and I identify its role in supporting knowledge work performance. A questionnaire is carried out among a non-representative sample of knowledge workers. The results shed light on the purposes of the microblogging messages that knowledge workers write. It also helps us find out whether microblogging supports them in performing their work. The survey is based on existing theory that supplied me with possible microblog purposes as well as theory on what the actions of knowledge workers are. The results reveal that “knowledge & news sharing”, “crowd sourcing”, “socializing & networking” and “discussion & opinion” are frequent microblog purposes. The study furthermore shows that microblogging benefits knowledge workers’ work. Microblogging seems to be a worthy addition to the existing means of communication in the workplace, and is especially useful to let knowledge, news and social contact reach a further and broader audience than it would in a situation without this social networking service

    The impact of life changes on social media practices: An ethnographic study of young Chinese adults living in Australia

    There are mainstream research focuses on how social media affect people's lives, the present study explores how people use social media when confronted with life changing events or circumstances, especially when living overseas. Being exposed to a new living environment in Australia, many young adults from other countries are faced with a range of challenges. These may include cultural barriers, language limitations, employment difficulties, and academic pressures. The interpersonal relationships of young adults and their technological mediations shift as they experience life changes. Drawing from long-term ethnographic research among young adults who moved from mainland China to Australia for further education or employment, I argue that social media are crucial in assisting young adults to navigate their life transitions. However, this plays out differently depending on the type of relationship and social context (friendship, love, family and work). I propose that with the affordances and the integrated communicative environment that polymedia (Madianou & Miller's 2013) provides, young adults living overseas present themselves and their life changes to diverse groups of people in different ways in order to mediate different types of ongoing relationships. This thesis contributes to the scholarship of interpersonal relationships and social media studies by exploring the digitally mediated communication of young adults going through life changes

    Potentiale von Enterprise Social Networks und Business Process Management zur Gestaltung effizienter Unternehmen

    In dieser Dissertation werden ausgewählte Fragestellungen aus den Bereichen Business Process Management (BPM) und Enterprise Social Networks (ESN) beantwortet. Im Kontext des BPM werden drei Forschungsfragen erarbeitet: (1) In welchem Ausmaß sind BPM-Maßnahmen in klein- und mittelständischen Unternehmen umgesetzt? Welche Faktoren können identifiziert werden, die sich fördernd oder hindernd auf die Umsetzung von BPM-Maßnahmen auswirken? (2) Welche Auswirkungen (z.B. Zeit, Kosten) haben BPI-Pattern in verschiedenen Szenarien? Was sind fördernde und hindernde Faktoren für die Anwendung von einzelnen BPI-Pattern? (3) Wie können kulturelle Eigenschaften anhand von Geschäftsprozessen gemessen werden und wie lassen sich die gewonnen Erkenntnisse in Prozessverbesserungsinitiativen nutzen? Im Kontext des ESN werden ebenfalls drei Forschungsfragen erarbeitet: (1) Was ist der aktuelle Stand der Literatur im Themenbereich ESN und welcher Forschungsbedarf besteht weiterhin? (2) Welche Benefits lassen sich durch den Einsatz von ESN erzielen? Können alle Benefits den traditionellen IT Capabilities zugeordnet werden oder schaffen ESN neue IT Capabilities? (3) Wie kann der Erfolg von ESN im Kontext von "Social Capital" gemessen werden und welchen Nutzen bringt ein entsprechender Messansatz? Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen werden unterschiedliche Forschungsmethodiken angewendet, im Speziellen Literature Review, Survey, Case Study, Design Science, Content Analysis und Experiment. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden in wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen aufgearbeitet, wobei je Forschungsfrage ein Beitrag erarbeitet wird
