A Peer-to-Peer Normative System to Achieve Social Order
International audienceSocial order in distributed descentralised systems is claimed to be obtained by using social norms and social control. This paper presents a normative P2P architecture to obtain social order in multi-agent systems. We propose the use of two types of norms that coexist: rules and conventions. Rules describe the global normative constraints on autonomous agents, whilst conventions are local norms. Social control is obtained by providing a non-intrusive control infrastructure that helps the agents build reputation values based on their respect of norms. Some experiments are presented that show how communities are dynamically formed and how bad agents are socially excluded

Exploring the resource recovery potentials of municipal solid waste: a review of solid wastes composting in developing countries
Population explosion, high urbanization and improved living standards have induced rapid changes in quantities and materiacompositions of solid waste generation globally. Until recently solid waste disposal in landfills and open dump sites waconsidered more economical and it is the most widely used methods in developing countries. Hence the potentials in the othealternative methods such as the resource recovery and recycling and their integration into waste management have been scarcelassessed. However, the ever growing challenges posed by the rapidly increasing quantities and compositions of solid wastes ideveloping countries led to the searching for alternative waste disposal methods. In this regard the paper presented an assessmenof the resource potentials of municipal solid waste materials arising from cities in developing countries as a strategy fosustainable solid waste management. Using published data on solid waste composition the paper has identified that there is higpotentials of composting in the solid waste stream from cities in developing countries. In conclusion, it recommended the recoverof organic waste material and papers for composting and the recycling of plastic, metals, textiles and others to explore their resource recovery potentials. This will largely reduce the ultimate quantities of solid waste for disposal and lower the operatincosts. This strategy will achieve sustainable waste management in developing countries. It is hoped that the paper has provided useful guide for wastes management policy decisions in developing countries
A Review of Norms and Normative Multiagent Systems
Norms and normative multiagent systems have become the subjects of interest for many researchers. Such interest is caused by the need for agents to exploit the norms in enhancing their performance in a community. The term norm is used to characterize the behaviours of community members. The concept of normative multiagent systems is used to facilitate collaboration and coordination among social groups of agents. Many researches have been conducted on norms that investigate the fundamental concepts, definitions, classification, and types of norms and normative multiagent systems including normative architectures and normative processes. However, very few researches have been found to comprehensively study and analyze the literature in advancing the current state of norms and normative multiagent systems. Consequently, this paper attempts to present the current state of research on norms and normative multiagent systems and propose a norm’s life cycle model based on the review of the literature. Subsequently, this paper highlights the significant areas for future work
Efficient and Flexible Search in Large Scale Distributed Systems
Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology has triggered a wide range of
distributed systems beyond simple file-sharing. Distributed XML
databases, distributed computing, server-less web publishing and
networked resource/service sharing are only a few to name. Despite
of the diversity in applications, these systems share a common
problem regarding searching and discovery of information. This
commonality stems from the transitory nodes population and
volatile information content in the participating nodes. In such
dynamic environment, users are not expected to have the exact
information about the available objects in the system. Rather
queries are based on partial information, which requires the
search mechanism to be flexible. On the other hand, to scale with
network size the search mechanism is required to be bandwidth
efficient.
Since the advent of P2P technology experts from industry and
academia have proposed a number of search techniques - none of
which is able to provide satisfactory solution to the conflicting
requirements of search efficiency and flexibility. Structured
search techniques, mostly Distributed Hash Table (DHT)-based, are
bandwidth efficient while semi(un)-structured techniques are
flexible. But, neither achieves both ends.
This thesis defines the Distributed Pattern Matching (DPM)
problem. The DPM problem is to discover a pattern (\ie bit-vector)
using any subset of its 1-bits, under the assumption that the
patterns are distributed across a large population of networked
nodes. Search problem in many distributed systems can be reduced
to the DPM problem.
This thesis also presents two distinct search mechanisms, named
Distributed Pattern Matching System (DPMS) and Plexus, for solving
the DPM problem. DPMS is a semi-structured, hierarchical
architecture aiming to discover a predefined number of matches by
visiting a small number of nodes. Plexus, on the other hand, is a
structured search mechanism based on the theory of Error
Correcting Code (ECC). The design goal behind Plexus is to
discover all the matches by visiting a reasonable number of nodes
