Structured Interview Tools: Insights and Issues from Assessing Wellbeing of Fishermen Adapting to Change Using Scoring and Ranking Questions
This case discusses the use of researcher-administered structured interview tools, with ranking and scoring exercises, combined with more open-ended fluid interviews. Drawing on empirical work applying methods from wellbeing research to understanding the social impacts of change in a small-scale fishing community in the East of England, I discuss the insights that were gained from using these tools and some of the methodological issues I encountered. Finally, I reflect on my experience and some of the ethical questions that arose when using these tools. In doing so, I explain my decision to abandon the use of these tools and to privilege a less structured interview approach
Query Chains: Learning to Rank from Implicit Feedback
This paper presents a novel approach for using clickthrough data to learn
ranked retrieval functions for web search results. We observe that users
searching the web often perform a sequence, or chain, of queries with a similar
information need. Using query chains, we generate new types of preference
judgments from search engine logs, thus taking advantage of user intelligence
in reformulating queries. To validate our method we perform a controlled user
study comparing generated preference judgments to explicit relevance judgments.
We also implemented a real-world search engine to test our approach, using a
modified ranking SVM to learn an improved ranking function from preference
data. Our results demonstrate significant improvements in the ranking given by
the search engine. The learned rankings outperform both a static ranking
function, as well as one trained without considering query chains.Comment: 10 page
Leveraging Contextual Cues for Generating Basketball Highlights
The massive growth of sports videos has resulted in a need for automatic
generation of sports highlights that are comparable in quality to the
hand-edited highlights produced by broadcasters such as ESPN. Unlike previous
works that mostly use audio-visual cues derived from the video, we propose an
approach that additionally leverages contextual cues derived from the
environment that the game is being played in. The contextual cues provide
information about the excitement levels in the game, which can be ranked and
selected to automatically produce high-quality basketball highlights. We
introduce a new dataset of 25 NCAA games along with their play-by-play stats
and the ground-truth excitement data for each basket. We explore the
informativeness of five different cues derived from the video and from the
environment through user studies. Our experiments show that for our study
participants, the highlights produced by our system are comparable to the ones

IRGAN: A Minimax Game for Unifying Generative and Discriminative Information Retrieval Models
This paper provides a unified account of two schools of thinking in
information retrieval modelling: the generative retrieval focusing on
predicting relevant documents given a query, and the discriminative retrieval
focusing on predicting relevancy given a query-document pair. We propose a game
theoretical minimax game to iteratively optimise both models. On one hand, the
discriminative model, aiming to mine signals from labelled and unlabelled data,
provides guidance to train the generative model towards fitting the underlying
relevance distribution over documents given the query. On the other hand, the
generative model, acting as an attacker to the current discriminative model,
generates difficult examples for the discriminative model in an adversarial way
by minimising its discrimination objective. With the competition between these
two models, we show that the unified framework takes advantage of both schools
of thinking: (i) the generative model learns to fit the relevance distribution
over documents via the signals from the discriminative model, and (ii) the
discriminative model is able to exploit the unlabelled data selected by the
generative model to achieve a better estimation for document ranking. Our
experimental results have demonstrated significant performance gains as much as
23.96% on Precision@5 and 15.50% on MAP over strong baselines in a variety of
